    PALAZZO DUCALE DI URBINO GALLERIA NAZIONALE DELLE MARCHE LA NOSTRA MINI GUIDA Disegnato dall’architetto Luciano Laurana, sullo splendido scenario naturale delle verdi colline marchigiane, l’imponente palazzo di Urbino è stato così descritto da Baldassar Castiglione nella sua opera Il Cortegiano: “ …il più bello che in tutta l’Italia si ritrovi; e d’ogni oportuna cosa sì ben lo fornì, che non un palazzo, ma una città in forma di palazzo esser pareva”. Patrimonio dell’Umanità dal 1998, Urbino divenne, per volere di Federico da Montefeltro, una delle corti più raffinate e intellettualmente attive del Rinascimento, una vera e propria “Città ideale”. Moltissimi letterati, musicisti ed artisti dell’epoca si formarono in questa città, per poi irradiare i tesori della propria arte in tutta Italia. Fra i tanti, possiamo ricordare Raffaello Sanzio, che nacque in questo ameno borgo dove ancora oggi si può visitare la sua dimora. Dal 1912, il Palazzo Ducale è sede della Galleria Nazionale delle Marche e ospita numerosi capolavori della storia dell’arte italiana. Le collezioni di opere d'arte esposte derivano in larga parte da opere raccolte nel XIX secolo, da chiese e conventi del territorio marchigiano. Relativamente scarse sono invece le opere delle collezioni ducali, già disperse nel corso dei secoli. Federico da Montefeltro, valoroso capitano di ventura e illuminato mecenate, signore del Ducato dal 1444 al 1482, volle la realizzazione di quella che ancora oggi è considerata una delle più belle opere del Rinascimento: il Palazzo Ducale di Urbino. Fra le innumerevoli maestranze che furono impiegate per la costruzione, spiccano i nomi di tre architetti: il fiorentino Maso di Bartolomeo, il dalmata Luciano Laurana, il senese Francesco di Giorgio Martini e di diversi decoratori e artisti che resero il palazzo un punto focale del Rinascimento Italiano.

La guida vuole avere una precisa funzione: quella di essere uno strumento, di facile consultazione, per conoscere ed apprezzare le bellezze artistiche ed architettoniche del più bel palazzo di Pesaro, assurto a simbolo iconologico della città. La guida non ha nessuna ambizione di sostituirsi agli impor- tanti studi precedentemente compiuti, a partire dall’inizio degli anni venti del secolo passato, e culminati in attente e rigorose pubblicazioni, nasce con uno spirito di servizio: una guida, pratica ed essenziale, per dare, in maniera sintetica ma esauriente, tutta quell’informazione preziosa per capire e godere di un’opera artistica di grande espressione, che acco- muna numerosi aspetti dell’architettura, della pittura e della scultura in un’armonica disposizione.     A maiolica service for Giuseppe Baviera of Senigallia Timothy Wilson [Riassunto da rimanere in inglese] Abstract: The present article presents, in grateful homage to the memory of Monsignor Franco Negroni, four istoriato maiolica plates, now in Mdina (Malta), Munich, Naples, and a private collecton, which bear arms here identified as those of Giuseppe Baviera (1530-1591) of Senigallia. Giuseppe, the man who commissioned the remarkable series of stucco ceilings from Federico Brandani in his Palazzetto Baviera in Senigallia, was a leading citizen of that town and also a close associate of Duke Guidubaldo II of Urbino. The service to which these four plates belonged is tentatively attributed to the Fontana workshop in Urbino.] As a foreigner studying Italian Renaissance ceramics, and especially the maiolica of the Duchy of Urbino, I had frequent reason over nearly twenty years to thank Monsignor Franco Negroni for the tranquil courtesy of his welcome to and guidance through the Urbino archives, for his generosity with his vast accumulation of notes from those archives, and for the model he has always provided of rigorous scholarship in adding to our knowledge of the history and visual culture of Renaissance Urbino. It is a source of pleasure to all those who care about the history of this inspirational city that his precious notebooks are safely secured for future generations of scholars to draw on. The present modest contribution is on a subject on which he could, were he still among us, perhaps have shed more light. It is offered in grateful and affectionate tribute to his memory. The subject of this article is a series of four maiolica plates, now widely scattered, which all bear the same coat of arms.

    FEDERICO BRANDANI «ECCELLENTISSIMO PLASTICATORE»: TRA L’URBE, LA MARCA E IL DUCATO DI SAVOIA MATTEO PROCACCINI La prima documentata attività di Federico Brandani (Urbino, 1525 ca.-1575) si colloca nell’ambito dei variegati cantieri decorativi av- viati durante il papato di Giulio III Del Monte che, nel solco del grande progetto di renovatio del predecessore Paolo III Farnese, as- sursero a poli attrattivi fondamentali per numerosi artisti e mae- stranze, favorendo quel formidabile incontro tra le più eclettiche esperienze che innervavano i principali centri della penisola. Seb- bene infatti gli studi non siano sinora riusciti a chiarire la forma- zione ed i termini cronologici entro cui sistematizzare la produ- zione dell’urbinate, non vi è alcun dubbio che il soggiorno romano costituisca uno snodo fondamentale per la sua intera carriera di ar- tista e plasticatore. Si deve in primis ad Antonino Bertolotti, e in se- guito ad Adolfo Venturi, la proposta d’identificazione di Brandani con quel «Federigo da Urbino» citato all’interno del libro mastro del tesoriere di Giulio III, per alcuni pagamenti datati tra il 25 set- tembre 1552 ed il 23 giugno 15531. La coppia ‘di- vina’ è stata spesso presentata come la migliore espressione dello spirito di una terra e di un ambiente forgiati dall’impronta del grande Federico da Montefeltro. Entrambi si sono abbeverati alla fonte della corte feltresca in tempi e modi sui quali resta molto da accertare. Il Duca è ancora indicato come forte riferimento culturale, oltre un secolo dopo la sua morte, dal poeta e matematico urbinate Bernardino Baldi, abate di Guastalla, prolifico studioso e letterato, il quale nel 1587 stende la descrizione del palazzo di Urbino anche, come egli afferma, per «l’obligo che io porto alla memoria di quel grandissimo prencipe [Federico da Mon- tefeltro], il quale con ogni ragione da noi altri di Urbino deve essere chia- mato padre della patria» 2.     Updated 20 November 2020 Bibliography of works on Italian Renaissance and later maiolica [A few relevant works on painting and drawing and on ancillary subjects such as heraldry, iconography, and the history of collecting have been listed here. Only some of the numerous archaeological publications dealing with medieval maiolica and with slipware in the context of excavations have been included. Works dealing with post-17th- century maiolica have, in the main, been included only when they are relevant to the collections in the British Museum or the Ashmolean Museum. Completeness has not been the intention and some things I have found useless, derivative, or vacuous have been deliberately omitted (and others no doubt by mistake).     Updated 28 February 2018 Bibliography of works on Renaissance and later maiolica [An extensive bibliography of the older maiolica sale and collection catalogues is given by Norman 1976. A few relevant works on painting and drawing and on ancillary subjects such as heraldry, iconography, and the history of collecting have been listed here. Only some of the numerous archaeological publications dealing with medieval maiolica and with slipware in the context of excavations have been included. Works dealing with post-17th-century maiolica have, in the main, been included only when they are relevant to the collections in the British Museum or the Ashmolean Museum. Completeness has not been the intention and some things I have found useless, derivative, or vacuous have been deliberately omitted (and others no doubt by mistake). This also incorporates the bibliography to Dora Thornton’s and my Italian Renaissance Ceramics. A catalogue of the British Museum collection (2009), and of my book Italian Maiolica and Europe for the Ashmolean Museum (2017), and items cited therein, including some not specifically on maiolica, are, for the most part, included.
