ON THE REORGANIZATION OF THE GREAT NAPOLEONIC ARMY IN NOVEMBER 1812 In the year 1812, Smoleńsk was to have served as a supply center for the Great Army. When deciding to retreat from the battlefi eld at Malojaroslavec, Napoleon was convinced that Smoleńsk was well prepared and that the Great Army would be able to spend the winter in its vicinity. Yet it turned out that the Great Army commissariat and the local Napoleonic governors were not able to adequately prepare the Smoleńsk fortress. Therefore on reaching Smoleńsk, Napoleon made the decision that the Great Army should retreat further to the west – onto the territories of the former Polish Commonwealth – Lithuania. In the course of a few days from 9–14 November, he managed to increase the size of the Great Army by around 20 thousand soldiers. When leaving Smoleńsk, Napoleon’s army had still around two hundred canons at its disposal. It had adequate supplies of food, ammunition and was to a large degree “rejuvenated”. Napoleon had attained a great feat at Smoleńsk. He had in fact saved the Great Army. Without his effort, the army’s further march would have been impossible. The reorganized Great Army was able to retreat further to the west and its regiments were ready to fend off the attacks of the enemy – that is Russians, as was proved by the heavy fi ghting in the battle of Krasne.

Integration Processes of Italian Immigrants in the Republic of Nobles There has been quite a lot written on activities of the Italians in the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth. We have many facts about the lives and achievements of many outstanding figures, especially art‑ ists (architects and builders, musicians, people of theatre) as well as merchants and enterprisers. And despite all that, the phenomenon of Italian immigration to the territory of the Polish‑Lithuanian state seems to have been insufficiently examined – both from the perspective of Italian motivations and extent of fulfilment of their life plans related to Poland, and from the perspective of consequences of the Italian presence for the old Polish society – both in the sphere of culture and politics, and economy. Thus, a relative advancement of studies is accompanied by an ignorance (generally, although not always, being a consequence of scarcity of sources) in fundamental questions – a number of Italian immigrants and chronology of their arrival to Poland, their professional structure, and their territorial settlement, especially outside big cities. There is a need for further studies exploring the goals set by individuals belonging to this very diverse community, and assessing the extent to which they were fulfilled. First and foremost, however, it is the scale of impact those Italian ar‑ rivals had on various factions and communities of the old‑Polish society. The whole picture of this process will be very difficult to reconstruct. Before I attempt to do so, I would like to present a few remarks and doubts about the level of their integration and possible group solidarity that characterised the Italian minority in the Commonwealth.

    Acta Poloniae Historica 113, 2016 PL ISSN 0001–6892 Piotr Szlanta Institute of History, University of Warsaw THE LEMKOS’ GREAT WAR: WARTIME EXPERIENCES OF THE LEMKO PEOPLE, 1914–18 Abstract The First World War imposed a severe stigma on the Lemko people, the Ruthenian mountaineers residing on the northern mountainside of the Carpathians. Military operations, political repressions, malnutrition, and epidemics of contagious diseases caused severe damages and losses in the population and materials. In the late 1914 and early 1915, the front-line was set through the Lemko Land. The area’s eastern part was occupied for several months by the Russians. The occupational authorities planned to annex the area after the war, as they recognised the Lemkos as part of the Russian nation. On the other hand, the Lemko people were generally treated by the Austro-Hungarian authorities with suspicion, as allegedly favouring Russia. They were accused of sabotage and collaboration with the occupiers. Many a Lemko was executed, often without any proof of guilt whatsoever. Some 2,000 were sent to an internment camp in Thalerhof, not far from Graz. The war facilitated the split among the Lemkos into those who considered themselves members of a Ukrain- ian nation and those who recognised themselves as a separate ethnic group. This article examines the Easter festival from an ecumenical point of view, focusing on the Patristic period and the so-called “Easter Controversies” in the Early Church concerning the date on which the Resurrection should be observed, as a means of assessing both the validity of the resolution of such controversies and the possibly continuing impact of that resolution on the Church today. I will divide this examination into four parts. First, I will consider what guidance we have from the Scriptures as to how, if at all, the Church is to celebrate the Resurrection. Second, I will focus on the Easter Controversies, and in particular the quartodeciman position, in the context of the Council of Nicaea and Nicaea’s resulting decision concerning the need for a uniform date on which to celebrate Easter. Third, I will note the disputes that remained within the Church concerning the observance of Easter after Nicaea, notwithstanding the attempt at reaching full unity on this issue. Finally, I will attempt to gauge whether any failure to reach unity on the question of when to observe the Resurrection has any continuing impact on the Church today. I. The Easter Festival from a New Testament Point of View This is not the place for an extended treatment of worship practices in the New Testament, let alone for how such practices might be informed by Old Testament practices.

Yours is the Kingdom of God!” The Easter Story never changes in its most basic outline: Jesus died. The women came to the tomb. The tomb was empty. There was much rejoicing. The details of the story are highly dependent on us. Where do we focus our Upcoming Worship minds?
