Forces of Secularity in the Modern World, Vol. 1 Stephen Strehle is a leading scholar of church/state issues. In this volume, he fo- 11 cuses his rigorous historical analysis and philosophical acumen upon a topic of great interest today and source of cultural wars around the globe—the process of STREHLE secularization. They express less concern about the polemi- cal differences that divided the church during the days of orthodoxy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and spend more time wondering about the prospects for basic Christianity surviving as a viable force of culture in the future. Indeed, they find Jesus expressing this same concern and warning about god-lessness in the “latter days,” where the people are living a worldly existence of “eating, drinking, marrying, and giving in marriage” (Mt 24:38), without any thought about a higher or transcendent calling in life and no fear of any imminent visitation from the heavens above (Lk 18:8). Here these Christians find Jesus expressing their same concerns over what people these days describe as “secularity.” Today sociologists use the term to describe a disposition that finds religious categories irrelevant, that interprets the world as a self-sufficient system, containing an autonomous causal nexus or immanent force, negating any need for divine intervention, let alone a cataclysmic coming of the Messiah. The process of “secularization” is described as a tendency to liberate culture from religious authority, control, and significance.1 Bryan Wilson delineates certain aspects of this process in these “latter days”: Secularization relates to the diminuation in the social significance of religion. Its application covers such things as, the sequestration by political powers of the property 2 | FORCES OF SECULARITY IN THE MODERN WORLD and facilities of religious agencies; the shift from religious to secular control of various of the erstwhile activities and functions of religion; the decline in the proportion of their time, energy and resources which men devote to supra-empirical concerns; the decay of religious institutions; the supplanting, in matters of behavior, of religious pre- cepts by demands that accord with strictly technical criteria; and the gradual replace- ment of a specifically religious consciousness (which might range from dependence on charms, rites, spells, or prayers, to a broadly spiritually-inspired ethical concern) by an empirical, rational, instrumental orientation; the abandonment of mythical, poetic, and artistic interpretations of nature and society in favor of matter-of-fact description and, with it, the rigorous separation of evaluative and emotive dispositions from cog- nitive and positivistic orientations.2 Modern sociologists spend a great deal of time debating whether the world is becoming more and more secular in its outward form.

Although the categories of religion and secularity had not yet acquired a stable and identifiable form during this early modern phase, those early modern colonial encounters, which are the main focus of this paper, played a significant role in the emergence of the categories in the West in the transition from the first to the second phase of globalization.

    Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China proto­typical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. In the joke, the kettle owner accuses his friend of returning the kettle damaged, an accusation to which the friend replies, “I have never borrowed your kettle; I retuned it to you unbroken; it was already broken when I borrowed it.” In a similar fashion, Kelly suggests flux, chaos, and churn- ing (along with their corollary social effects of instability and unpredictability) should not be opposed to or mitigated for three reasons: this cannot be done (flux in the network economy is inevitable; a transfer of a natural phenomenon into the social realm through network technology), it is better not to do it (flux is benevolent, yielding good results for everyone); and it is dangerous to do it (since it will result in knocking the system out of its self-regulating, natural imbalance).

    Explaining Global Secularity: Existential Security or Education? Claude M. J. Braun1 Université du Québec à Montréal ABSTRACT: At the time of data analysis for this report there were 193 countries in the world. Various institutions – the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the CIA, the World Values Survey, Gallup, and many others – have performed sophisticated statistical analyses on cross-national data. The present investigation demonstrates that valid and reliable data concerning religiosity and secularity exist for most countries and that these data are comparable. Cross-national data relating to social, political, economic and cultural aspects of life were tested for correlation with religiosity/secularity. In contrast to the most widely accepted general account of secularity, the Existential Security Framework (ESF; Norris & Inglehart, 2004), secularity was not most highly related to material security, though these were highly related. Rather, secularity was most strongly related to the degree of formal education attained. Material security explained no significant variance beyond education. Thus, religion’s primary function in the world today is being replaced, not so much by the pseudo-materialistic supplication for better living conditions as posited by the ESF, but by contemporary education – extensive knowledge of contemporary cultures, philosophy, modes of thought or processes of reasoning. E-mail: [email protected] This course is designed to introduce first-year students to some of the major debates and recent (and sometimes classic) books in European history from the 1750s to the 1870s. It is also intended to help prepare students for the First (Written) Examination. Objectives: By the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate familiarity with many of the central historiographical issues in the period and to assess historical writings in terms of approach, use of sources, and argument. They should be able to draw on multiple works to make larger arguments concerning major problems in European history. Requirements: Each week, students will come to class prepared to discuss assigned readings. They include common readings and individual works chosen from the supplementary lists. In anticipation of the next day’s class, by early Tuesday evening, students will have submitted by email to the instructor and to the rest of the class a two-to-three-page (double-spaced) paper on their week’s readings. Eleven papers must be submitted; two weeks may be skipped, but even then everyone is expected to be prepared for discussion. The papers should not simply summarize. They should explain and compare the theses of the assigned books; describe the authors’ methods, arguments, and sources; and assess their persuasiveness, significance, and implications.

Yet death is the topic supremely difficult for historians to research, since, though all live under its shadow, none has experienced it directly for himself, and there are no scientific tests of its most momentous putative consequence, an afterlife, for which men have slain and been slain. It is, nevertheless, a fashionable subject of inquiry, gaining 6clat first in France, and now, like so many other Paris fas- hions, being exported to Britain and across the Atlantic. One can chronicle death at the most metaphysical level (as in Norman 0. Brown's Life against Death (1959), a Freudian psychohistory of mankind, viewing civilization as a holding operation, keeping death at bay, a bid on immortality), or in the most personal terms, as in Victor and Rosemary Zorza's Kindertotenbuch, A way ofdying (1980), which offers a moving account of the agonies of coming to terms with the departure of a loved one.
