Within this context, the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) has developed a new suite of global layers, which accurately describe the built-up environment and its characteristics at high spatial resolution: (i) the World Settlement Footprint 2015 layer (WSF-2015), a binary settlement mask; and (ii) the experimental World Settlement Footprint Density 2015 layer (WSF-2015-Density), representing the percentage of impervious surface. -

World Fertility and Family Planning 2020 Highlights ST/ESA/SER.A/440 Department of Economic and Social Affairs Population Division World Fertility and Family Planning 2020 Highlights United Nations New York, 2020 The Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat is a vital interface between global policies in the economic, social and environmental spheres and national action. The Department works in three main interlinked areas: (i) it compiles, generates and analyses a wide range of economic, social and environmental data and information on which States Members of the United Nations draw to review common problems and take stock of policy options; (ii) it facilitates the negotiations of Member States in many intergovernmental bodies on joint courses of action to address ongoing or emerging global challenges; and (iii) it advises interested Governments on the ways and means of translating policy frameworks developed in United Nations conferences and summits into programmes at the country level and, through technical assistance, helps build national capacities. The Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs provides the international community with timely and accessible population data and analysis of population trends and development outcomes for all countries and areas of the world. To this end, the Division undertakes regular studies of population size and characteristics and of all three components of population change (fertility, mortality and migration). Founded in 1946, the Population Division provides substantive support on population and development issues to the United Nations General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and the Commission on Population and Development. It also leads or participates in various interagency coordination mechanisms of the United Nations system. -

CHAPTER 3 Cultural Reflections on the Popularity of Chinese Learning Zhao Lin The Historically Inevitable Emergence of the “Chinese Learning” Craze Recently, a cultural resurgence has occurred in China that has compelled widespread attention: the emergence of the popularity of Chinese learning.1 Many universities have established sinological academies, sinological research institutes, and a prodigious number of sinological forums with varying inter- pretations of traditional Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism. In every city square, all kinds of old customs and new things are borrowing from prestige of “Chinese learning.” Many major events, such as Confucian rituals at the Temple of Confucius and paying homage to the Tomb of the Yellow Emperor, have made a lot of noise with their massive displays; even the practices of geo- mancy ( fengshui), divination, and astrology are plying their arts. This inher- ently complex “Chinese learning craze” has a very strong appeal and tempers the intensity of China’s rapid economic growth and ideals of its revival as an international power. The Chinese learning craze gives the face of the Chinese cultural spirit an image in stark contrast to the “wholesale Westernization” of the early reform period in China. In relation to the global culture that emerged at the end of the cold war, this “Chinese learning craze” seems to pos- sess culturally conservative values, demanding cultural “modernization, not Westernization.” This is manifested as a conscientious national cultural iden- tity while also having imperfections -

Toward Liberalism: Politics, Poverty, and the Emotions in the 1790s Peter Denney Griffith University I n the volatile atmosphere of the mid-1840s, the leading exponent of Victorian liber- alism, John Stuart Mill, published an essay in the Edinburgh Review in which he rejected the assumption that political economy encompassed a “hard-hearted, unfeeling” approach Ito the question of poverty.1 Entitled “The Claims of Labour,” a major purpose of the essay was to advocate self-help as the key to improving the condition of the laboring classes. According to Mill, the promotion of self-help was an urgent matter, for there had been a revival of the belief that the situation of the poor could be ameliorated either by charity or by the redistribution of property. It was as if people had forgotten the population theory of Thomas Robert Malthus, who, beginning in the late 1790s, argued that such schemes exacerbated the problem of poverty by discouraging the laboring classes from developing qualities like restraint and industriousness that were crucial not just to their improvement but to their survival. Radical and conservative critics alike condemned Malthus both for the bleakness of his theory and for the cold, calcu- lating attitude it seemed to endorse. While understanding such criticism, Mill dismissed these detractors as the “sentimental enemies of political economy.”2 At the same time, he insisted that political economy was compatible with sympathy, if not with sentimentality. If interpreted cor- rectly, it generated a view of the poor that mixed empirical observations with positive emotions, producing a sense of optimism regarding the future of the laboring classes. -

The objective was to identify the influence of practical experiences involving ethnobiology applied to science teaching on intercultural dialogue into their initial training. To collect data, undergraduate students were asked to construct narratives revealing the influences of ethnobiology into their training as future teachers. Data were analyzed according to Bardin (1977) and supported by specific literature from the fields of science education and teaching. The thematic categories generated lead us to conclude that the undergraduates of biology teaching made reflections that allowed them to build opinions with meanings that should influence their pedagogical practices with intercultural dialogue. We recommend further studies involving ethnobiology and the training of biology teachers, with a larger sample of participants and the methodological and theoretical procedures of this science. Improvements could be made in biology teacher education curricula that encourage respect and consideration of cultural diversity. We highlight that it is imperative for teacher education courses to generate opportunities for on-site practical experience, in addition to the theory used in the classroom. -

International Cohorts Summit JB Duke Hotel Durham, North Carolina, USA March 26 – 27, 2018 Summit Objectives The International Cohorts Summit was conceived by the Heads of International Research Organizations (HIROs) group co-chaired by Francis Collins at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Jeremy Farrar of the Wellcome Trust. Dr. Collins and Dr. Farrar reached out to the Global Genomic Medicine Collaborative (G2MC, www.g2mc.org), to organize a first forum with the goal of enabling leaders of large-scale longitudinal cohorts worldwide to share best practices, discuss data sharing, explore standards, discuss common challenges, and explore the potential for a larg(er) collaborative sequencing strategy. The primary objectives of this meeting will include: ● Improving prospects for interoperability and compatibility of instruments, data formats, phenotypic and clinical measures, etc ● Promoting data sharing and open access policies ● Broadening international cooperation through existing tools and resources ● Exploring the feasibility of a "digital" platform, or web-based, evolving registry of large-scale cohorts, in searchable format ● Examining the potential for a collaborative sequencing (and other -omics?) strategy ● Considering strategies for translating findings for health impact ● Advancing a collective vision: where do we want to be in ten years? GLOBAL CATASTROPHIC RISKS SURVEY (2008) Technical Report 2008/1 Published by Future of Humanity Institute, Oxford University Anders Sandberg and Nick Bostrom At the Global Catastrophic Risk Conference in Oxford (17‐20 July, 2008) an informal survey was circulated among participants, asking them to make their best guess at the chance that there will be disasters of different types before 2100. This report summarizes the main results. Mapping Rapidly Changing Minority Ethnic Populations: a Case Study of York
Mapping rapidly changing minority ethnic populations: a case study of York Gary Craig with Sue Adamson, Nazreen February 2010 Ali and Fasil Demsash Official statistics can be of limited help to those providing services to increasingly diverse populations. Using an innovative approach, this project drew on both formal and informal sources to estimate the size and diversity of York’s minority ethnic population and the implications for key agencies. The project was commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s York Grants Committee, which makes modest grants to organisations to help improve the general quality of life in York. The Committee wanted a more up-to-date picture of the city’s population than census data offers, to help inform its work. This report looks at: • the approach piloted by the project • what this approach found • the project team’s recommendations for policy and service organisations in York. The project suggests that York’s population is much more ethnically diverse than is often supposed, identifying 78 different first languages within the city. www.jrf.org.uk When they talk about communities, all they see are white, Asian, black and possibly Chinese.
