Charles William Brebner (1852-1922) Charles Brebner was a well-known ship captain of Jamaican descent. I had a letter in October from his grandson, John L. Brebner in Mauritius, parts of which are excerpted below with my own additional footnotes and commentary. “May I introduce myself, I am also John Brebner from the island of Mauritius. Last week my daughter Stephanie and I were talking about my late Grand Dad Charles William Brebner Master Mariner FRGS – FRSA, a Catholic and a Freemason, he was also the first Brebner to set foot and settled here….” “On my side our roots came to a dead end in Jamaica, but I am sure it goes beyond the shores of Jamaica. Based on local experience, I believe that in the distant past a British European colonizer, a Brebner, settled in Jamaica, married or lived in concubinage with a native woman there and gave his name to his offspring and my Grand Dad was his descendent. I do not believe that a name like Brebner could be an ancestral native name of Jamaica.”i “I have not known my Grand Dad, as per his photograph I could see that he was a strong well built coloured Guy, most of his children and great grand children have fair complexions with blue/grey eyes…” “Charles William Brebner was born in 1852ii in the County of Cornwall, Lucea, Jamaica. He died in Mauritius on the 5th June 1922 and was buried at Port Louis West Cemetery, Grave Section 11 N. 318”. “As the story goes when he was a child his parents immigrated to the United States, one day he and his little sister were playing in the back garden. -

From 1808 through the 1860s, Britain also exerted considerable pressure (accompa nied by equally considerable sums of money) on the U.S.A., Brazil, and European countries in the trade to cease their slaving. Subsequently, at the outbreak ofthe American Civil War in 1861, which was at least partly fought over the issue ofthe extension ofslavery, Britain declared her neutrality. Insofar as appearances were concerned, the British government both engaged in a vigorous suppression of the Atlantic slave trade and kept a distance from Confederate rebels during the American Civil War. -

												Headington, Bridge of Weir
M209 Headington, Bridge of Weir Introduction This large, L-shaped, roughcast detached house with curved gabled dormers derived from 17th-century Scottish vernacular architecture, is located in the affluent Renfrewshire commuter village of Bridge of Weir. It was built for Alfred Allison Todd, partner in Dunn & Todd, a Glasgow firm of chartered accountants. Authorship: Drawings showing a slightly different treatment of the house were in Mackintosh's possession at the time of his death, and suggest that he contributed to an early stage of the design process. The plan, materials and historical references have parallels with Windyhill and The Hill House, but the house was built according to drawings signed by John Keppie, and it seems likely that Keppie had overall control of the design. SEAFARING WOMEN: An Investigation of Material Culture for Potential Archaeological Diagnostics of Women on Nineteenth-Century Sailing Ships by R. Laurel Seaborn April, 2014 Director of Thesis/Dissertation: Dr. Lynn Harris Major Department: Department of History, Program in Maritime Studies ABSTRACT During the 19th century, women went to sea on sailing ships. Wives and family accompanied captains on their voyages from New England. They wrote journals and letters that detailed their life on board, adventures in foreign ports, and feelings of separation from family left behind. Although the women kept separate from the sailors as class and social status dictated, they contributed as nannies, nurses and navigators when required. Examination of the historical documents, ship cabin plans, and photos of those interiors, as well as looking at surviving ships, such as the whaleship Charles W. Morgan, provided evidence of the objects women brought and used on board. The investigation from a gendered perspective of the extant material culture, and shipwreck site reports laid the groundwork for finding potential archaeological diagnostics of women living on board.
