On 9 March 2009, John Rossall applied to register the above trade mark in 1 class 41 of the Nice Classification system . Following publication of the application in the Trade Marks Journal on 17 April 2009, Peter Phipps filed notice of opposition against the application which is for the following services: Providing musical entertainment by way of live shows and tours played in public and private venues and by appearances on television; recording and publishing of music. 2. Mr Phipps’ opposition is brought under sections 3(6), 5(1), 5(2)(a), 5(2)(b) and 5(4)(a) of the Trade Marks Act 1994 (“the Act”). What questions should historians be asking about UK popular music in the 1970s? John Mullen, Université de Rouen Normandie, Equipe ERIAC One of the most important jobs of the historian is to find useful and interesting questions about the past, and the debate about the 1970s has partly been a question of deciding which questions are important. The questions, of course, are not neutral, which is why those numerous commentators for whom the key question is “Did the British people become ungovernable in the 1970s?” might do well to balance this interrogation with other equally non-neutral questions, such as, perhaps, “Did the British elites become unbearable in the 1970s?” My reflection shows, it is true, a preoccupation with “history from below”, but this is the approach most suited to the study of popular music history.

  • Glam Rock by Barney Hoskyns 1
Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.

  • The New Culture Industry Tracing Democratization, Cultural Pluralism, and a New ‘Stillness’ in Modern Music
Savoy 1 The New Culture Industry Tracing democratization, cultural pluralism, and a new ‘stillness’ in modern music Augie Savoy Professor Jennifer Friedlander 9/28/20 Savoy 2 PREFACE In this country, it’s very hard for creative thought to escape capitalism. —Juan Atkins I have the impression that many of the elements that are supposed to provide access to music actually impoverish our relationship with it. —Michel Foucault As a listener, my earliest memory of music is hearing Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall on a portable CD player when I went to pre-school in Norway. Because my family had recently moved there, I had no experience speaking Norwegian and, until I figured it out, my parents thought I could listen to music to pass the time. For better or worse, it did far more than that. It started my love affair with music. On the surface, Off the Wall was straight to the point, ener- getic, and loud. As I replayed it, I realized that I could stick my head into the production and hear all the small details. The drums were rigid and robotic. The bass was relaxed and fluid. Michael Jackson’s voice was elastic, traveling across an entire emotional spectrum from tender to harsh. The production felt like a spectrum of different faces and characters. It was the storytelling and humanness of the record that made it compelling. It turned an uneventful day in pre-school, sur- rounded by kids I couldn’t understand, into a cinematic piece of art. Like Michael Jackson’s legacy, however, my relationship to music has become more complicated as I’ve gotten older.
