Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. 1970s American Family Life On Television Shifting Gender Dynamics in the Sitcoms The Brady Bunch and That ‘70s Show By Tom Hegeman 4053079 Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Frank Mehring Second Reader: Dr. László Munteán Department of English Language and Culture August 15, 2015 Hegeman4053079/2 Abstract The main purpose of this research is to answer the question of how the American family life changed in the 1970s. The subsequent step will be to see how these changes were shown in The Brady Bunch, a sitcom from the ‘70s, and in That ‘70s Show, a sitcom from the late ‘90s. In the 1970s the economy endured a severe downfall, set into motion by the oil embargo of 1973. The family also changed through the women’s liberation movement, persuading more and more women to join the labor market, making them able to provide for themselves. With the power to provide for themselves, women are more prone to divorce their husbands and take the children with them. Fathers lose their position as the breadwinner and hereby a bit of their authority. Children spend longer periods at home, mostly discovering who they are and developing themselves. These changes are almost invisible in The Brady Bunch which portrays a picture-perfect family without any real troubles. The Benefits of Comedy: Teaching Ethics through Shared Laughter Christine A. James, PhD Assistant Professor of Philosophy Valdosta State University Valdosta, Georgia E-mail: [email protected] Over the last three years I have been fortunate to teach an unusual class, one that provides an academic background in ethical and social and political theory using the medium of comedy. I have taught the class at two schools, a private liberal arts college in western Pennsylvania and a public regional state university in southern Georgia. While the schools vary widely in a number of ways, there are characteristics that the students share: the school in Pennsylvania had a large population of students raised in a middle class industrial context, and the school in Georgia had a majority of students from middle-to-lower class agricultural backgrounds. Because of recent collapses in the economy of the tool and dye industry in the Great Lakes region, and the ongoing concerns for development in rural and urban areas of the southeastern United States, both groups of students were in similarly dire economic and working conditions. All faced the distinct possibility that they would not do as well in life as their parents. Most of the students grew up with television and film and had a love of comedy when they arrived at college. Entertainment and mass media contributed to the students' mindset and the lens through which they viewed and interpreted their lived experience. Comedic mass media in the form of television sitcoms and films were common choices for inexpensive entertainment, in their childhood, in their past, in their homes, and now in their college dorms and apartments. -

Since the widespread presence of so many mentions of Korea clearly demonstrates that the Korean War is not forgotten, this project critically evaluates several forms of public memory (including museum exhibitions, historical scholarship, films and television shows, state and local monuments, and memorial infrastructure including bridges, highways, buildings, and trees) in order to explore how the war has come to be called forgotten. Reed Adviser Graduate Program in History ABSTRACT The trans-Himalayan airlift of World War II, better known as the “Hump,” is recognized among specialists as the first sustained and most ambitious combat airlift operation in modern history. Cobbled together with only a handful of airplanes and aircrews in early 1942, the operation grew to become the ultimate expression of the US government’s commitment to China, in the end delivering nearly 740,000 tons of cargo. This was no small feat, either, as the US Army Air Forces’ aircraft flew in what is arguably the world’s worst weather system and over its most rugged terrain, all the while under the threat of enemy attack. The thesis of this dissertation is that the Hump airlift was initially started to serve as a display of American support for its Chinese ally who had been at war with Japan since 1937. However, by the start of 1944, with the airlift’s capability gaining momentum, American strategists set aside concerns for the ephemeral concept of Chinese national will and used the airlift as the primary means of supplying American forces in China in preparation for the US’s final assault on Japan. -

The central aim of this dissertation is to examine how some critical themes of the ‘long 1970s’ have been portrayed on the highly popular sitcom That ‘70s Show, with a focus on the counterculture, drugs, casual sex, feminism, and race and ethnicity. For the purpose of this dissertation, the ‘long 1970s’ refers to the period from the emergence of the counterculture in the early-to-mid-1960s until 1980. That ‘70s Show was an American sitcom set in the fictional town of Point Place, Wisconsin. The show was based around a group of six adolescent friends and set in the period from May 1976 to December 1979. -
