ARGONAUTA RESEARCH DIRECTORY

INTRODUCTION

This special supplement to the October 1996 issue of ARGONAUTA contains the fourth edition of the CNRS Research Directory. This time the directory contains listings for 248 individuals. While we would of course like to have a higher proportion of the membership represented, we are nonetheless gratified by the response and would like to thank all those who took the time to provide information. We hope that readers will find the guide useful in pursuing their individual interests in maritime history and in making contact with others with similar concerns or specialized expertise. These are the purposes for which the directory was intended.

The format ofthe 1996 directory has been changed only slightly from previous editions. Indeed, there are only two significant alterations. First, we have provided a much broader set of categories in the index section. We have done this because as the CNRS membership becomes ever more international, it is important that contributors to the directory be able to defme their research interests more precisely. The second difference concerns the way in which we have treated those members who have not revised their information. Contrary to our practice in previous directories, we have excluded all those who have not responded. We felt this was necessary since some of the reprinted listings from 1993 were so far out of date that they were no longer reliable.

The directory is, we hope, easy enough to understand. For each member who responded to our requests for infor mation, we list what has been provided. The address, whether home or office, is the one which the member has suggested. Home addresses are denoted by the letter "H;" places of employment are signified by the letter "0." Similarly, phone and FAX numbers, where provided, are differentiated by the same symbols. E-mail addresses are not followed by an H or 0, since such distinctions are not really relevant to that technology. The descriptions of research interests and the publications included are those selected by individual respondents.

A brief word is perhaps also in order about the indices. We asked members to select up to three broad areas that describe their areas of research interest or special expertise. We also invited them to choose a particular chrono logical period and to pick up to three geographic areas to identify their central interests. While it will be obvious that these restrictions forced some members to make difficult choices, we still hope that you will fmd them useful. In particular, we hope that the indices will suggest to readers with particular interests the names of others with similar inclinations. You will fmd the indices at the end of the research directory.

We hope that this directory meets your needs. But since the Executive has decided to publish a revised directory every three years, members with suggestions for improvements might wish to share them. Although this will be the fmal directory that the present compilers will produce, if you send your ideas to one of us, we will be only too happy to see that they get into the hands of the appropriate people. In the interim, we hope that you will continue to see updates of listings, corrections (where necessary), and details on new members as space permits in regular issues of ARGONA UTA.
