Dear Editor: Two in three. That’s how many Samoan women experience domestic violence. The recent stories in Samoa news detail the impact of domestic & sexual violence. We have read the reporting of sexual harass- ment in government work place, and leadership response, it’s not a “news issue.” We have read the suffering of victims at the hands of intimate partners, as well as sexual assault on a ten-year-old by a repeat offender. These accounts have struck a nerve within me. It is dif- fi cult to stay silent, and I am reluctant to sit on the side lines. In April we talked about Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), people are encouraged to “Embrace our Voice” to end the violence. I have been fortunate to work at the American Samoa Alliance against Domestic & Sexual Violence, aka “the Alliance”. A non- profi t agency, funded through two grants to promote education, awareness in the community about domestic & sexual violence, and help support those member organizations who share our vision/mission of strengthening families. Often, we ignore the bruise on someone’s face, or the scared co-worker or friend, or family member who we know suffers in silence, because we convince ourselves it will go away, or it’s not that bad, or worse yet we blame the victim for staying in an abusive relationship. American Samoa cannot combat domestic & sexual violence by continuing to be bystanders, we must become active partici- pants to end violence. Domestic & sexual violence have been with us long before the stories highlighted in Samoa News. It has been an issue far too long. How do we combat domestic & sexual violence? We listen to those who have been victims and allow them to share their stories. We arm ourselves with knowledge, and have Giuliani confounds, contradicts real authentic, respectful communication with the purpose of understanding how domestic & sexual violence is weaved into our community. The rest of the country might be stunned, too, if Republicans win in November and McCarthy succeeds in his quest to become speaker of the House, next in line after the vice president to the presidency. Yet many in Bakersfi eld are musing that “Kevin” — he’s still just easygoing, uncom- plicated Kevin here — might actually pull off this ascent. The Republican Party insiders who nurtured his career are proud, if a bit surprised. Critics are just as stumped at what they see as a new, low bar for top leadership. But in this under-examined corner of California’s Trump country, there’s also a bit of told-you-so defi ance that McCarthy’s brand of hustle and persistence pays off, even in Washington. “People probably have a certain perception of Kevin — he didn’t graduate from Har- vard or do a lot of things poli- ticians do,” said Rick Priest, a McCarthy pal since the seventh grade. “He works hard. He has a lot of people behind him here.” “I’m not going to suggest everything’s going to be glitter and fairy dust if he becomes speaker,” said Larry Starrh, a third-generation family farmer who has watched McCarthy mature from intern to potential House speaker. But McCarthy has the kind of energy and atti- tude that “takes care of a lot of things.” “He’s hard to knock down,” he said. McCarthy, the House majority leader, declined to be interviewed on the record. Unscripted remarks have caused him trouble and he says he’ll talk about the speaker’s race after Republicans retain control of the House — and he maintains they will. He has said little about what’s next for him if they don’t. samoa news, Monday, May 7, 2018 Page 7

On Saturday, she received alerts from her security system that motion sensors throughout the house had been triggered. She later confi rmed that lava had covered her property. Makuakane grew up in the area and lived in her house for nine years. Her parents also live in Leilani Estates. “The volcano and the lava -- it’s always been a part of my life,” she said. “It’s devastating ... but I’ve come to terms with it.” Lava has spread around 387,500 square feet (36,000 square meters) surrounding the most active fi ssure, though the rate of movement is slow. There was no indication when the lave might stop or how far it might spread. “There’s more magma in the system to be erupted. As long as that supply is there, the eruption will continue,” U.S. Geological Survey volcanologist Wendy Stovall said. Cherie McArthur wondered what would become of her macadamia nut farm in Lani- puna Gardens, another evacu- ated neighborhood near Leilani Estates. One of the year’s fi rst C M harvests had been planned for Y K this weekend. “If we lose our farm, we don’t know where we’re going to go. You lose your income and you lose your home at the same time,” said McArthur, who’s had the farm for about 20 years. “All you can do is pray and hope and try to get all the information you can.” About 250 people and 90 pets spent Saturday night at shelters, the American Red Cross said. The number of lava-venting fi ssures in the neighborhood grew overnight from eight to as many as 10, Stovall said, though some have quieted at various points. Regardless, USGS sci- entists expect fi ssures to keep spewing. samoa news, Monday, May 7, 2018 Page 9

May God's Grace, Blessings and Eternal Love be with you through all Eternity

In Lling Memmy Sina'ita'aga Ellen Patricia Coleman Januey 8, 1959 - April 20, 2018

Our darling sister, Sina'ita'aga (Sina) passed away on April 20

C M and was laid to rest alongside her parents, Governor Tali Peter T. Y K and Nora K. Colman. Born with Down Syndrome, Sina was a very special member of our family. She came into this world at a time when carriers of Down Syndrome were not expected to live much beyond their teenage years. But what doctors could not do to prolong her life was made up by a very loving family who cared for and protected her throughout her life.li She knew she was loved and gave us her unqualified love in return.

We have learned a lot from Sina over the years. She taught us how to be happy with the simple joys of life and unconditional love. Sina conveyed her love to us through her eyes and we responded with our unending adornment. She dressed simply and thrived on a simple diet. Her favorite meal was a plain dish of tuna and rice.

As we say farewell to Sina, we know her soul has risen to the heaven above and she is now reunited with our parents and brothers, Burt and Bruce. We will all miss Sina, but we are at peace knowing she had a long and happy life, and now she is in a better place.

Sina, you are an angel who blessed us with your life, and you will always hold a special place in each of our hearts.

WithW love forever,

As chief prosecutor for Guatemala, Aldana won plaudits at home and abroad as the woman who sent a president to prison and broke up a number of high-level corruption rings. tBut it came at a cost — her own personal safety — as her crusading angered some of the country’s most powerful and dan- gerous people, long accustomed to doing as they pleased with little or no consequences. The biggest trophy on her wall from four years in office: Taking down a network allegedly led by then-President Otto Perez Molina, who is accused of defrauding the state of millions of dollars. “In the Bible it says you shall know them by their fruits, and I gave my best effort,” Aldana said in a series of interviews with The Associated Press as she prepares to leave office when her term ends this month. “With all modesty, I leave with my head high.” Those close to her call the 62-year-old Aldana “the boss.” She is described as a strictly punctual person and a voracious reader. Appearing before news cameras to announce the latest corruption ring to fall, she typically appears calm, collected and intrepid. Her facial expression is often tough and inscrutable, making it difficult to guess what she is thinking. It seems the only one able to crack that demeanor is Toby, her 5-year-old Shih Tzu. Speaking to the AP in a small room at her offices decorated with recognitions where she likes to receive visitors, Aldana broke into a broad smile recalling how when she brings work home, Toby likes to rest in the cardboard box she e Rotary Club of Apia donated 600 reading books for the Samoa Returnees Charitable Trust of uses to carry the same documents that could end up putting crimi- Samoa to assist in their literacy program. nals and politicians behind bars.
