												OPEN STORY Opening up the Main Floor and Adding Custom Stor- Age Solutions Lets the Small Home Function Like a Much Larger Space
DECORATING o stay or not to stay? That was the question facing this family. Their challenge: A total revamp turns a cramped, they were growing, but their 1920s Montreal row house wasn’t. Was a move to disorganized main floor into a the suburbs necessary or could a reno turn their house into a dream home? “Young families often come to this fork in the road,” says designer Eugenia flowing family space with tons of Triandos of Hibou Design & Co. “In this case, they truly wanted to stay.” But with storage and style. two young boys, the tight layout was rife with storage issues, and the outdated closed-off kitchen (and its constantly used backyard door) was frustrating. She elevated the chronically chaotic front entrance into a gloriously organized space, and turned the kitchen into both a haven for family togetherness and a gateway to outdoor play. Then she turned her attention to aesthetics. 1905 Florence Bingham Kinne in the Pathology Department, becomes the first female instructor at Yale. 1910 First Honorary Degree awarded to a woman, Jane Addams, the developer of the settlement house movement in America and head of Chicago’s Hull House. 1916 Women are admitted to the Yale School of Medicine. Four years later, Louise Whitman Farnam receives the first medical degree awarded to a woman: she graduates with honors, wins the prize for the highest rank in examinations, and is selected as YSM commencement speaker. 1919 A Timeline of Women at Yale Helen Robertson Gage becomes the first woman to graduate with a Master’s degree in Public Health. Vi e w p o i n t How to Build a Residential Co l l e g e by Robert J. O’Hara ritics of higher education in the United States have been missing their proper target for many years. It Cmay be true on some large campuses that “tenured radicals” and trendy courses have politicized the curriculum and brought about a local collapse of Western civilization. But it is also true that radical professors have been annoy- ing the establishment since Peter Abelard disturbed the church fathers in medieval Paris and trendy courses have been objects of scorn since Harvard University first allowed its students to substitute French for Hebrew (in 1787). The real crisis in higher education today is not about the curriculum, it is about the poverty of student life. At most large universities in the last 40 years, the faculty have given up all responsibility for the lives of students outside the classroom and the resulting vacuum has been fil l e d with nonacademic residence life departments. For a gener- ation, troubles such as out-of-control dormitories, social iso- lation, alcohol abuse, institutionally promoted segregation, and a complete lack of connection between the classroom and life outside the classroom have plagued universities that nevertheless advertise themselves as “caring” and “ s t u d e n t - c e n t e r e d . ” The solution to the problem of the poverty of campus life is simple and radical: we must return the faculty to their proper place—not just as teachers in the classroom R o b e r t J. -

AMAR: Third thoughts on Kavanaugh Akhil Amar In a Yale Daily News op-ed published on Sept. 24, I offered “Second Thoughts” on the Supreme Court nomination of Justice Brett Kavanaugh ’87 LAW ’90 and mapped a procedural path forward through the dense thicket of accusations and denials. I proposed: (1) a speedy public hearing followed by (2) additional investigation, with (3) a firm end date to the investigation — I floated Oct. 5 — and (4) scope restrictions on the investigation to prevent “still more extensions [and] ever wider investigations.” On Sept. 24, no one else — so far as I know — was publicly proposing this precise procedural framework, but, as events actually unfolded in the following weeks, something remarkably similar to my proposed framework was in fact cobbled together and implemented, though critics have argued that the scope of the FBI’s post-hearing investigation was unduly narrow. Kavanaugh’s confirmation on Oct. 6 raises countless questions — the episode will spawn shelves of future books and articles. Today, I will address just one narrow issue of special local significance: Yale’s, and my own, complicated relationship to power. Yale prides itself on its tradition of preparing future leaders. In his Yale College opening address on Aug. 25 — well before the Kavanaugh nomination boiled over and roiled the campus — President Peter Salovey proclaimed that “Our alumni are perhaps the greatest illustration of Yale’s tradition of service. Five Yale graduates have served as U.S. presidents, four as secretaries of state and eighteen as justices on the U.S. Supreme Court, representing viewpoints across the political spectrum.
