From the Editor

Welcome to the August edition and with thanks to Mark Colling and Beckie May for their Mini Biographies.

I have updated the club’s road race records up to the Millennium Bridge races which are last known to me. Please let me know of any possible omissions or error re times – after checking Power of 10 first please.

By the time you read this, you will have received an e mail from me regarding the Cross Country season. I will of course include the Fixture Lists for both of the leagues that club members compete in, and these are included in the Race Diary in this edition and also on the Club Web page.

I am hoping that we can get more members competing in the North and South Durham League this coming season, especially Under-17s as they cannot compete in the East Yorkshire League.

As regards the East Yorkshire League, two clubs have been added. The East Hull Harriers and the Yorkshire Wolds Runners. The East Hull Harriers’s men’s team was the first team at the 2017 Yorkshire Coast 10K, so they will be an additional challenge for our men’s team! Other changes include a 90 minute time limit for all races. This should not affect any of our club members. All of the races will now start at 10.00. This is to prevent the event business for the organisers and officials spilling over into Sunday lunchtime!

This edition includes the latest Committee Meeting Minutes which has items of interest to all.

Committee Meeting held at Scarborough Rugby Club on 2nd August 2018.

Present: Mick Thompson, Shaun Tymon, Sean Kelly, David field, Harry Forkin, Chris Wade, Simon Valente

Apologies for absence: Melanie Padgham, Ralph Broadley, Sharon Houghton

Correspondence: Harry Forkin had received an email from England Athletics regarding funding being available for establishment of satellite clubs. This was discussed and thought to be not applicable to SAC’s position.

An email had been received from club member Alan Whelan regarding first aid being available on club runs and suggesting that training be established for run leaders. This issue was discussed and while not obliged to provide such support, it was agreed the club would offer some level of first aid training to members who wish to take this up. A decision would then be made regarding providing this training. The result would be that future club runs may include members trained in first aid but this would not be guaranteed, and this is not a target for the club.

Finance report: Tony Tomaszewicz reported the following club account balances: Current account: £18,409.09 Race account: £21,948.82 Savings account: £41,680.93

Social events: A club bike ride is scheduled for August 3, and a celebration of Ralph Broadley’s 70th birthday at Weatherspoons on August 17th.

The Christmas dinner will be held on December 14th.

Junior section issues: Chris Wade reported that the groups are thriving, with over 20 attending on Tuesdays. Promotion had been achieved in the athletics league, which was a great achievement. Chris’s personal efforts in contributing to this success were acknowledged.

Junior members will be encouraged to take part in the 2018/19 NYSD cross country series; a bus may be provided to support this. This effort would be in line with the club’s strategic direction.

McCains 10k and fun run: David Field reported that a meeting had been held with McCains, who were happy with arrangements. New McCains logos will be used this year on the start/finish gantry. The Spa can be opened up to provide greater space, bearing in mind the increased entry this year. The 10k will start in three waves of runners, based on predicted times. Some steps will be taken to uprate race publicity for the 10 year anniversary. A waiting list for entries of around 300 people has been established and will be applied as entrants inform the club of withdrawing from the event. Direct transfer of numbers from entrants to other individuals will also be permitted as in previous years.

Proposed new track: Shaun Tymon reported that following further discussion with England Athletics and the local council, a pay as you go option should be favoured over an up-front cash commitment from the club towards funding of the project. The club will focus on what is desired from the facility and what financial commitment may be felt to be appropriate.

Club relay races: Following the success of the recent event it was agreed there was an appetite to hold another relay race, which may include juniors. A run/jump/throw competition will be considered for the future.

Barons Gym: The club pays £5 per member to the Rugby Club and it was anticipated that club members should be able to access facilities at Barons Gym by producing their club membership card at the reception desk. The rugby club will be requested to provide a notice board for the club within the building.

Strategic direction of the club: Enhanced service to members and promotion of the sport to members is ongoing, evidenced by four new run leaders taking up duties and the planned promotion of juniors’ involvement in the NYSD series.

Any other business: Tony Tomaszewicz announced his intention to stand down from the post of club treasurer on March 31, 2019. Tony was thanked for his extremely valuable contribution to the club over many years.

David Field confirmed that Sharon Corden will be leaving Scarborough shortly. Sharon’s contribution to the club’s popularity was acknowledged, in particular her organisation of transport to races . The committee extended its gratitude to new run leaders in undergoing their training and taking up roles with regular training groups. This has already proved to be very effective.

Next committee meeting: The next committee meeting of SAC is planned for September 6, 2018, at Scarborough Rugby Club.

Mini Biography

Mark Colling

Years as a runner; 20 years.I was a late starter at 33. I initially began running to keep fit for 5-a-side football around 1997. I started running a 5-mile loop on the cinder track trying to improve my times. I decided to enter the Scarborough 10k which I did in about 38 min. I joined the club not long before the two local clubs merged to become Scarborough AC.

Best performances; EYXC 1st overall 2002/03, EYXC 1st overall 2004/05, North Yorkshire 10 mile Championship winner 2008. PB.s 800m, 2.13 1500m 4.30, 5000m 16.15 , 10k 34.20 , 10 mile 58.22.

Favourite race; Beverley 10k . A tough climb up the Westwood but a fast last couple of miles to the town centre finish. You need to get a good position as the start is a little narrow.

Favourite female athlete;.Not a big fan of watching athletics so closer to home Sue Haslam gets my respect for what she is achieving as a Veteran when regularly topping the UK rankings for her age group. Also two of the quickest females I have raced against Rowan Johnson at her peak and Bronwen Owen, who I ran against once at a 5k in York, and also for what she has achieved since.

Favourite male athlete; I have much respect for our own Neil Scruton. When I first started entering races Neil was the one who I would try and keep up with for his experience at running at an even pace. He was and still is a tough competitor more often than not winning his age group in the many races and disciplines he runs every season. A true role model for any runner to follow.

Targets; If I can remain fit and injury free I am confident I can go sub 35.00 for 10k again. I also want to visit a few different Parkruns to have a crack at the age group records. I currently hold the Vet50 records at Sewerby and Dalby Forest.

Ambitions; My ultimate ambition would be to gain an England vest as a Veteran runner. Although sadly I am quite injury prone so find it difficult to maintain a high level of training for a sustained amount of time.

Funniest moments; At a track meeting some years ago our team was short of a 110m hurdles runner so my mate Colin Grundy volunteered to run it. He cleared the first hurdle then it all went pear shaped, He hit pretty much every remaining hurdle hitting the deck every time. He never gave up and finished a bruised and battered man. I was filming the action at the time and sent the tape into Youv'e Been Framed and received £250. It is still shown now and again on TV.On another occasion I was running on the Cleveland Way I rounded a corner where an old chap was picking brambles, round the next bend was his wife with her drawers round her ankles answering the call of nature.I gave her a cheery good morning and proceeded on my way...afterwards I was thinking that the old man could have shouted at his wife to warn her or said something to me...maybe it’s just the British Way.

Beckie May

Years as a runner; I always enjoyed running at school and used to run a bit for fitness when I was racing mountain bikes, but I have only been running regularly for the last 5 years. It’s a great discipline that can fit into a busy life. I started running with a York club after work to keep me fit when I couldn't get out surfing, and soon after joined SAC.

Best performances; I ran well at last year’s Brid half- I knew I couldn’t have run any faster that day and helping Sue and Rhona get the SAC team prize was fantastic. I was 4th in my category and 10th lady which wasn’t my best placing however it meant more as I worked so hard. Best result was for DH mountain biking with 3rd in my category in the 2001 national championship season.

Favourite race;I love competition so enjoy most races, but I prefer ones with a view

Favourite female athlete; Too many! I admire anyone with dedication and determination and I love watching what women athletes can achieve, however women who fight back after illness or accidents like Fiona Ford (triathlon) or Nicky Spinks are a real inspiration to me. Nicky is amazing. I will pick her.

Favourite male athlete; Ron Hill?! (Currently looking for copies of ‘The Long Hard Road’ to read if anyone has one to loan?). Brownlee brothers. Kilian Jornet…incredible!

Targets; I want to beat my 10k PB this year and get under 45min . Ambitions; I would like to do more off road running/racing. To remember to smile and enjoy myself. To be as encouraging and inspiring to others as lots of runners in the club like Sue and Rhona have been with me. Schmaltzy but true.

Funniest moments; The Poultry Run fancy dress was a giggle. I hope I can make it this year as I missed last year’s antics. Also setting off ‘running’ with Sue Lough last winter in a blizzard, ploughing through knee high snow drifts. We had proper arctic white eyebrows. Not sure what we were trying to achieve but we found that very funny. Oh and Lisa Bourne; I always find her funny. One day I will be as witty as she is
