Crime and the fear of crime rank as the most important issues in public opinion polls. Some communities resemble war zones where gunshots ring out every night. Other cities struggle to create islands of civility amid threats to public order posed by low-level criminal behavior that eludes traditional measures. Appropriately, public policymakers and administrators in the criminal justice system are responding to the issue of crime in all its complexity. Every aspect of the infrastructure of our traditional criminal justice policy is undergo- ing fundamental rethinking. Our approaches to policing, adjudication, sentencing, imprisonment, and community corrections are changing in significant ways. Indeed, communities that are suffering from crime are changing their interactions with the agencies of the criminal justice system as the concepts of community policing, community prosecution, and community justice take on real meaning in cities and towns around the country. This combination—a sense of urgency on the part of the public and a rapidly changing policy response—creates a compelling need for policy-relevant research. When Attorney General Janet Reno addressed the American Society of Criminology at its annual meeting in November 1994, she challenged Society members to translate their re- search findings into recommendations that would benefit the practitioners and policymakers who confront the issues of crime and justice. The reports presented in these pages are the response to that challenge.

Mesmo Portugal nunca tendo vencido o Eurovisão, o Festival RTP da Canção continua a ser realizado como uma forma de celebração da música portuguesa e de erguer os ânimos da produção musical em nível nacional. Although Portugal has never won the Eurovision, the RTP Song Festival continues to be held as a way to celebrate the Portuguese music and to raise the spirits of music production at national level. Section 2 concentrates on two recent series of travel-chronicles commissioned by Alianza Editorial Mexicana and the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (1989-1997). The purpose of this section is to examine the variety of contemporary, and possibly postmodern, approaches to this stubbornly realist and traditional genre. Authors studied in detail are: Juan Villoro and Francisco Hinojosa (an ironic approach to the effects of postmodemity and postmodernism on Mexican life and the practice of travel-chronicling); Rafael Ramirez Heredia and Orlando Ortiz (the commonplaces of the contemporary travel- chronicle); Hector Perea and Alvaro Ruiz Abreu (an increasingly speculative, metaphorical approach); Fernando Solana Olivares and Hugo Diego Blanco (a move towards ‘archival fictions’ (Gonzalez Echevarria) which use previous travel-chronicles as an ‘archive’, rather than as models for form and content).

D. 2010 Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto In his “Letter on Humanism,” Martin Heidegger conveys the importance he attributes to poetry when he states: “Language is the house of being” (“Letter” 239). In response to his early Jesuit education, he developed a secular alternative to theology with his existential phenomenology. Theology, poetry, and phenomenology share the basic concern of explaining the foundations of being. For Heidegger, ownership characterizes being in a fundamental way; in Contributions to Philosophy (From Enowning) , he establishes the “Ereignis” (“event of appropriation”) as the foundation of being. Ownership lies at the core of being in his thinking following Being and Time . Yet his philosophy ignores the material circumstances of ownership. By way of a materialist critique of Heidegger’s Idealist phenomenology, I expose how property-relations are encoded in the modern poetry and philosophy of dwelling with the question: who owns the house of being? The answer lies in “self-possession,” which represents historical subjectivity as the struggle for the means of production. Paul Celan, T. S. Eliot, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Paul Valéry are all poets who address the relationship between being and ownership in expressing what Marx and Engels call the “language of real life” in The German Ideology (26).

The last decade or so has seen the growing significance of this approach in cultural and literary studies, especially in light of Edward W. Said’s influential volume On Late Style (2006), which brought the ideas into general circulation. This interest both reflects and feeds into the growth of a new discipline that might be termed “humanistic (or cultural) gerontology” and operates at the intersection of humanities, medical science, and social sci- ences.1 In the United States the new discipline has led the way in analyzing the implication of aging across a broad interdisciplinary spectrum, with numerous publications on aging and creativity, old-age style, “late style,” and the impor- tance for culture and philosophy of the notion of late work.
