The identity of the city in regards to the World War II in an autobiographical reflection Anna Olchówka University of Wrocław E-mail: [email protected] Abstract On the 1st September 1939 a German city Breslau was found 40 kilometers from the border with Poland and the first front lines. Nearly six years later, controlled by the Soviets, the city came under the "Polish administration" in the "Recovered Territories". The new authorities from the beginning virtually denied all the past of the city, began the exchange of population and the gradual erasure of multicultural memory; the heritage of the past recovery continues today. The main objective of this paper is to present the complexity of history through episodes of a city history. The analysis of texts and images, biographies of the inhabitants / immigrants / exiles of Breslau / Wrocław and the results of modern research facilitate the creation of a complex political, economic, social and cultural landscape, rewritten by historical events and resettlement actions. Keywords: Wrocław; Breslau; identity; biography; history Scientific meetings and conferences open academics to new perspectives and face them against different opinions, arguments, works and experiences. The last category, due to its personal and individual aspect, is very special. Experience can be shared and gained at the same time, which is inherent to the continuous development of human beings. Because of its subjectivity, experiences often pose a great methodological problem for the humanistic studies. -

Summary The historical cultural landscape of the western Sudetes. An introduction to the research I. Introduction The authors of the book attempted to describe the cultural landscape created over the course of several hundred years in the specific mountain and foothills conditions in the southwest of Lower Silesia in Poland. The pressure of environmental features had an overwhelming effect on the nature of settlements. In conditions of the widespread predominance of the agrarian economy over other categories of production, the foot- hills and mountains were settled later and less intensively than those well-suited for lowland agriculture. This tendency is confirmed by the relatively rare settlement of the Sudetes in the early Middle Ages. The planned colonisation, conducted in Silesia in the 13th century, did not have such an intensive course in mountainous areas as in the lowland zone. The western part of Lower Silesia and the neighbouring areas of Lusatia were colonised by in a planned programme, bringing settlers from the German lan- guage area and using German legal models. The success of this programme is consid- ered one of the significant economic and organisational achievements of Prince Henry I the Bearded. The testimony to the implementation of his plan was the creation of the foundations of mining and the first locations in Silesia of the cities of Złotoryja (probably 1211) and Lwówek (1217), perhaps also Wleń (1214?). The mountain areas further south remained outside the zone of intensive colonisation. This was undertak- en several dozen years later, at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, and mainly in the 14th century, adapting settlement and economy to the special conditions of the natural environment. -

A Latin etymology for Romanian da = yes Keith Andrew Massey County College of Morris, New Jersey <[email protected]> Abstract In this article the author argues that Latin ita is a possible source for Roma- nian da = yes, ordinarily assumed to be a Slavic borrowing. This emerges as phonologically possible, but unprovable. This controversial etymology is given even more credence by the demonstration that the Latin conjunction ita quod is a probable source for the Romanian conditional particle dacă. There is an interval of several hundred years in which no historical record mentions its exis- tence,1 let alone providing scholars with samples to track its evolution (Rosetti et al. 1969, 481; Sala 2005, 25). Romanian, like all Romance languages, has its own distinct features, owing principally to its particular local influences. This includes a significant influx of Slavic borrowings. One word of apparently Slavic origin in Romanian is da = yes. It seems impossible that any populace would choose to borrow such a basic word from another language. -

chapter 3 Immigrant Languages and Education Wisconsin’s German Schools antje petty n the second half of the nineteenth century, the Wisconsin land- scape was dotted with public, private, and parochial schools where I children and grandchildren of immigrants were taught in German, Norwegian, Polish, or other older immigrant languages that are de - scribed in chapter 2. Today, the language of instruction in Wisconsin schools is almost exclusively English, but the state still has large immi- grant communities with families who speak Hmong or Spanish (chap- ters 8 and 9), and the question of how to teach immigrant children is as current as it was 100 or 150 years ago. While the languages have changed, basic issues remain: Should Wisconsin children be taught in English only, in their native tongue, or in a bilingual setting? How im - portant is the language of instruction for “quality education” and content learning? What role does the school language play in the integration, acculturation, and “Americanization” process? And how important is the language spoken in the classroom for the maintenance of ethnic identity and cultural heritage? This chapter explores the example of schooling among German-speaking immigrants and their descendants in Wisconsin, the largest non-English-speaking population in the state’s early history.1 Education patterns in some other language communities such as Norwegian or Polish were generally similar, although the popu - lations were smaller populations.2 Still smaller groups, though, such as West Frisians, who numbered only a few hundred, lacked institutional 37 38 antje petty support and infrastructure like church services or a press and did not have schools teaching their language. -

But the main focus is on the irony that neither this language, nor a genuine German minority education system has been revived during the last quarter of a century that has elapsed since the fall of communism in 1989, despite promises to the contrary. The mystery persists. In the entry devoted to Poland in the respectable reference on the languages of the world, the Ethnologue, the number of native speakers of German living in the country is conservatively estimated at half a million.1 Until well into the 1990s German sources spoke of one million or a million and a half Germans in Poland. It is noted that the region where they live in compact areas of settlement is the countryside of Upper Silesia. But in the region the local Germans overwhelmingly communicate in the Silesian language. Silesia Superioris, Oberschlesien, Haute-Silésie, Horní Slezsko, Górny Śląsk, Felső-Szilézia—it is known by so many names, as many homelands in Central Europe were before the powers-that-be minced and fitted this part of the continent into the unbecomingly tight and too-small pantyhose of national polities, each so pure, homogenous through and through, so painfully monolingual. -
Cold-Climate Landform Patterns in the Sudetes. Effects of Lithology, Relief and Glacial History

Effects of lithology, relief and glacial history ANDRZEJ TRACZYK, PIOTR MIGOŃ University of Wrocław, Department of Geography, Wrocław, Poland ABSTRACT The Sudetes have the whole range of landforms and deposits, traditionally described as periglacial. These include blockfields and blockslopes, frost-riven cliffs, tors and cryoplanation terraces, solifluction mantles, rock glaciers, talus slopes and patterned ground and loess covers. This paper examines the influence, which lithology and structure, inherited relief and time may have had on their development. It appears that different rock types support different associations of cold climate landforms. Rock glaciers, blockfields and blockstreams develop on massive, well-jointed rocks. Cryogenic terraces, rock steps, patterned ground and heterogenic solifluction mantles are typical for most metamorphic rocks. No distinctive landforms occur on rocks breaking down through microgelivation. The variety of slope form is largely inherited from pre- Pleistocene times and includes convex-concave, stepped, pediment-like, gravitational rectilinear and concave free face-talus slopes. In spite of ubiquitous solifluction and permafrost creep no uniform characteristic ‘periglacial’ slope profile has been created. Mid-Pleistocene trimline has been identified on nunataks in the formerly glaciated part of the Sudetes and in their foreland. Hence it is proposed that rock-cut periglacial relief of the Sudetes is the cumulative effect of many successive cold periods during the Pleistocene and the last glacial period alone was of relatively minor importance. By contrast, slope cover deposits are usually of the Last Glacial age. Key words: cold-climate landforms, the Sudetes 1. -

Sándor Vogel Transylvania: Myth and Reality. Changing Awareness of Transylvanian Identity Introduction In the course of history Transylvania has represented a specific configuration in Eur ope. A unique role was reserved for it by its three ethnic communities (Hungarian, Romanian and Saxon), its three estates in politicallaw, or natio (nations), Hungarian, Szekler and Saxon existing until modern times, and its four established religions (recepta re/igio), namely Catholic, Lutheran, Calvinist and Unitarian, along with the Greek Orthodox religion of Romanians which was tolerated by Transylvania's political law. At the same time the Transylvanian region was situated at the point of contact or intersection oftwo cultures, the Western and the East European. A glance at the ethnic map - displaying an oveIWhelming majority of Hungarians and Saxon settlers in medieval times - clearly reveals that its evolution is in many respects associated with the rise ofthe medieval State of Hungary and resultant from the Hungarian king's con scious policies of state organization and settlement. lts historical development, social order, system of state organization and culture have always made it a part of Europe in all these dimensions. During the centuries ofthe Middle Ages and early modern times the above-mention ed three ethnic communities provided the estate-based framework for the region's spe cial state organization. The latter served in turn as an integument for the later develop ment of nationhood for the Hungarian and Saxon communities, and as a model for the Romanian community. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the period of the Ottoman State's expansion, the Transylvanian region achieved the status of an independent state in what was referred to in contemporary Hungarian documents as the 'shadow ofthe Turkish Power', thereby becoming the repository ofthe idea of a Hungarian State, the ultimate resource of Hungarian culture and the nerve center of its development. -

Both used to be countries in their own right, though nowadays are peripheral or borderland regions in the states in which they happen to be located, Scotland in the United Kingdom facing Ireland across the sea, while Silesia mostly in Poland on the border with the Czech Republic, beyond which the southernmost part of this historic region is located. Both Scotland and Silesia are multilingual. In the past the northwestern half of Scotland was Celtic-speaking, while the rest Germanicphone. Nowadays, following several centuries of English political, economic and cultural pressure emanating from London, the invariably bilingual speakers of Gaelic live in the Hebrides. Yet the suppression of Gaelic in most of the mainland Scotland left Celtic traces in place names and this language brushed off on the increasingly Anglicized speech of Scotland’s Germanic-speakers. Their language of Scots is a product of the social and historical changes. Today it is another mither tongue of the Scots, alongside Gaelic and English. Gaelic and English are present-day Scotland’s two official languages. Alongside Latin, Scots – known then as Scottis or Inglis – was a co-official language in the Kingdom of Scotland until the early Eighteenth century. Later, especially in the wake of the 1707 Act of Union between Scotland and England, this language fell out of written use, while English became the sole medium of education and official business across Scotland in the latter half of the Nineteenth century. -

Co? Was ? German-Polish Linguistic Attitudes in Frankfurt (Oder) Megan Clark Senior Linguistics Thesis Bryn Mawr College 2010 In this study I analyze the linguistic attitudes held by Polish and German speakers in the border towns of Frankfurt an der Oder, Germany and Słubice, Poland, held together by a cross-border university. I consider the historical background in the relationship between the two communities, including but not limited to the effect of Germany and Poland’s separate entrances into the European Union and Schengen zone, which have divided the two countries until recently, as well as the adoption of the Euro in both Germany and, later, Poland. With consideration of this history, I explore the concept of linguistic attitudes in other border communities to mark parallels and differences in the attitudes of speakers on each side of the border, most notably different because of the presence of the university on both sides of the dividing river. I supplement this research with a study conducted on speakers themselves within each side of the community to explore the underlying thoughts and ideas behind attitudes toward speakers of the other language, investigating why so many Polish speakers are fluent in German, while only a few German students endeavor to learn Polish. The research we have conducted here explores a very important aspect of language attitudes as a proxy for European geo-political relations as exemplified in the role of Poland as an outlier in the European Union due to its late joining and reluctant acceptance of the Euro. Though student relations on the border are strong, the heart of Słubice remains untouched by German residents, despite full osmosis of Polish citizens into the heart of Frankfurt.
