4 BADINGHAM

The BCC AGM took place on 8th November and was a chance to reflect on the success of the events held over the past year which had been very well supported by villagers of all ages: the Coffee Morning, Easter Egg Hunt, Jubilee Hog Roast and Fete. In her President’s Report, Sonja spoke of the sadness at the loss of Dorothy who played such a major part in village life and was a long-time supporter and committee member of the BCC. Pauline thanked all the committee for their support and hard work over the past year and included in her thanks all the people who freely offer their time and help to the BCC. BCC membership numbers had increased in the Treasurer’s Report. Gerry gave detailed information of income and expenses with extra costs this year for the Hog Roast and a new printer; which Paul Collins had kindly found for a very good price. Dates were set for the coming year: Easter Egg Hunt Monday 1st April Village Fete Saturday 22nd June AGM Thursday 7th November Coffee Morning Saturday 7th December Attending the AGM, Jill Pickford raised awareness of a scheme for villages to adopt their phonebox and use them as safe storage for a defribrillator to be used by anyone in an emergency. If you have any thoughts or know more about this scheme, please let us know. Jackie was thanked for her support now she has decided, no longer being a Badingham resident, to leave the committee; confirming she is more than happy to continue to help at events. If anyone is interested in joining the committee to help organise events, raise funds and support good causes for the benefit of everyone in the village please give Pauline a call on 01728 602542.

7 TUESDAY TEAS

The Tuesday Teas are going well, held every Tuesday between 2.45pm - 4.45pm at the Village Hall. We are hoping to make this afternoon a drop-in for all villagers. We already have some regulars from the school bus drop-off as well as part of the Bowls team after their Tuesday practice. It is our aim to make it a place where we can exchange information about what is going on in the village promoting all Badingham events as well as welcoming locals with businesses and items to sell to promote themselves. Its gathering momentum and we would dearly like it to mix and integrate all village groups, so it is really for everyone. The cakes are delicious and the tea is supplied by the pot full so there is no excuse to not hang around and chat! Tanya ~ Enterprise Badingham

12 Badingham Church Christmas Sale and Coffee Morning

Wow - what a busy morning! We had lots of people, new faces and some faithful supporters who visit us each year. As always a happy atmosphere prevailed and we had a most enjoyable morning. Our grateful thanks to all those who worked so hard to make it possible and to all those who came along to support us. Everyone's efforts resulted in a profit of £568 to help maintain our beautiful church and it's ministry in Badingham. We will send 10% of that total to The Salvation Army to help them to fund their Christmas Soup Kitchens. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE

OPERATION DRAWBRIDGE Protect your House’ and ‘Help us catch the burglar’, those were the messages from Police as they launched ‘Operation Drawbridge’ on 23rd October. The Operation is aimed at reducing the number of house burglaries happening in the county by encouraging homeowners to take simple measures to protect their house and to increase the amount of crimes solved by calling upon members of the public to provide police with crucial information to help bring those responsible to justice. The launch of the campaign coincided with the end of British Summer time. As darkness descends earlier in the day, homeowners are reminded to light up their homes and deter would-be burglars. More in the Feb/March Echo.

GOOD NEWS A good piece of news for a change; I have been informed that a Badingham householder who was burgled during the Summer has been reunited with their laptop. Would anyone else who has had items returned, please let me know.

ARRESTS Two men have been arrested, and subsequently bailed, on suspicion of burglary following a break-in at a home in Otley. They were a 37 year old from and 27 year old from Otley; charged over the theft of silverware. Another man has been charged for a 100 counts of burglary throughout Suffolk; Badingham being one of the villages named.

A Suffolk man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary following a series of recent break-ins at homes in and villages in the surrounding area. The 30 year old from was arrested in connection with a total of 21 burglaries.

BURGLARY- BADINGHAM The crime took place at an unsecured, derelict property which is currently under-going renovation between 5th - 8th October. If you saw two large white vans together between these dates, please pass on any information to Suffolk Police 101 quoting ref. LE/12/1210.

14 CAR REGISTRATION NUMBERS REQUIRED A property owner in the Laxfield Road area was disturbed at midnight when five youths knocked on the door, acting suspiciously. Green, blue and silver cars and a motorcycle were seen – please let me know if you have any information which I can pass to the Police or have an explanation to reassure the householder.

BURGLARY – DENNINGTON Between 21st and 28th October, a shed in Road, Dennington was broken into and a Hayter lawnmower and petrol strimmer stolen. Did anyone see anything? If you have any information regarding this incident contact Suffolk Police on 101 quoting ref. LE/12/1281.

METAL THEFTS Suffolk Police are continuing their Stop & Search initiative to target scrap metal theft. In recent weeks, 15 vehicles have been searched by targeting the routes into scrap metal dealers. Of these, four drivers were issued with fixed penalties for drug offences and one man was arrested at a scrap dealer for immigration offences.

THEFTS FROM VANS Please make sure your vehicles and tools are covered and doors locked. Drills, disc cutters and nail guns have being stolen.

KEEP US INFORMED One of the primary objectives of Suffolk Neighbourhood Watch is to act as a channel of communication - passing on timely information from the police to the community and from the community to the police - to help prevent and detect crimes. Please report thefts or damage immediately and keep your NHW Coordinators informed of any crime or suspicious behaviour in the local area. Thank you.

The Coordinators join with me in wishing you all a Happy, Peaceful Christmas and all the best for 2013. Sonja Russell Head Coordinator

15 A Message from Suffolk Police

Secure your oil tank

Suffolk Police are reminding residents to consider their oil tank security to avoid having valuable heating oil stolen.

With colder temperatures and the nights drawing in, many people have switched on their central heating and ordered more oil supplies. They are reminded that a few simple steps can help to make your tank and fuel more difficult for thieves to target:

· Screen your tank with fencing or hedges · Close and secure any gates leading to the tank · Conceal or cover any external pipes and fuel lines · Install dusk to dawn security lighting. CCTV is also a good deterrent · Install lockable caps supported by a closed shackle padlock · Consider installing a tank alarm · Join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme

It should be noted that some oil storage containers are plastic and some are metal, so any security measures which directly affect the tank or pipe work should always be installed in consultation with the tank supplier.

Regularly check the level of your fuel tanks. During cold weather your con- sumption of oil may be higher than you think, which could lead you to think that someone has been draining your tank.

Keep an eye on neighbourhood properties. Large quantities of oil are often stolen, which means the thieves will need sizable containers to collect oil and a van or larger vehicle to take it away. If you see any suspicious person or vehicle in your road or a neighbour’s driveway, contact the police immediately by dialling 999. Further information on oil tank security can be found on our website www.suffolk.police.uk or by calling your local Crime Reduction Officer on 101.

18 Rotary Club of High Suffolk Christmas is rapidly approaching and R.C. High Suffolk is busy making preparations for the annual 'Santa Sleigh' collection. Again, this will be in aid of the East Anglian Children's Hospice. Over the years, due to the open-handed generosity of residents, we have been able to make significant annual donations to the Hospice; usually approaching £2000. Nearly every year this total surpasses that of the previous year. Obvious- ly, we can only do this with your help. Each year the 'Santa Sleigh' visits seem to be both anticipated and welcomed in the towns and villages we visit. Christmas is a time for children and families. It is pleasing to know that these donations to the Hospice help children and their families who are in need of care and assistance. For us the experience of seeing the expressions of excite- ment, thrill and often awe, on the faces of the younger children as they see Santa far outweighs any discomfort suffered by our collectors should the winter weather be inclement. We will be collecting in: Eye on Monday 10th December Debenham on Tuesday 11th December Stradbroke on Wednesday 12th December on Monday 17th December Framlingham on Tuesday 18th December If you would like to make a donation, however large or small, please send a cheque or postal order made payable to R.C. High Suffolk to: Rtn. J. Gibbons, 6 Denmark Court, Palgrave, IP22 1BF. The full amount will be included in our donation to the hospice. Many thanks and a Happy Christmas. Rtn. J. My sister Kris and I know very little of our Granny other than her achievements in Art and the medals she won for her artistic talents. In her time, our quiet, unassuming Granny was a well-known artist having studied at the Slade School of Art in London.

Most of Edith’s paintings were porticulture; life drawings with quite magical colours depicting people showing their raw emotions. They are fantastically beautiful. One painting entitled ‘Gypsy Girl’ is painted in vibrant greens and reds. Other paintings show stunning references to the fashions of the day. The paintings are very much in the style of ‘The Cult of Beauty’; part of the Aesthetic Movement when artists sought to escape the ugliness and materialism of Victorian Britain. I am sure she was influenced by the talents of Burne-Jones, Whistler and Rosetti. Sadly, we can only guess at this but I hope Granny was able to enjoy their art.

In 1890 this English lass married a Norwegian mechanical engineer and chemist called Johannes Bull. Grandpa owned two ship building yards, one in Oslo and the other in Glasgow. He was famed for the Bull Propeller, which he designed and manufactured for the large, ocean-going ships. Grandpa was also a founder of the Norwegian Boy Scouts.

Sadly Granny was widowed aged 48 but still found time for her painting while bringing up five children and continued to paint to the end of her days. Her artistic genes were passed on to my father, Ivor Bull OBE, who was a talented landscape painter.

Granny’s paintings continue to give a lot of pleasure so I would like to thank Granny for this inheritance which we dearly treasure.

Last weekend I was called to help search for a dog who had vanished whilst being looked after by friends. Out for a day and night in cold, wet and freezing conditions we were imaging all sorts of doggy horrors so were relieved when he reappeared, rather bedraggled but none the worse for wear. We’ve returned many wandering mutts over the years but, after spreading the word amongst neighbours, dog walkers and landowners what should you do if your dog goes missing? Please send your ideas.
