Hillard/Sizemore Special Issue Black Girls and Womyn Matter: Using Black Feminist Thought to Examine Violence and Erasure in Education Ayana Tyler Hardaway, Ph.D. Temple University LaWanda W.M. Ward, J.D., Ph.D. The Pennsylvania State University Diamond Howell University of Wisconsin-Madison As students, Black girls and womyn share a collective history of marginalization and discrimination within the P-20 education system. They disproportionately experience violence in educational settings; however, they continue to be understudied. This theoretical essay presents support for using Black Feminist Thought as an analytical framework for examining legal and policy discourses that shape and inform institutional responses to campus violence towards Black undergraduate womyn at Historically White Institutions and disproportionality in disciplinary measures for Black girls. We use this framework to explore how disciplinary and legal practices disregard intersectional identities, which results in the privileging of whiteness while rendering Black girls and womyn invisible. Implications are shared based on theoretical strategies, which promote the advancement and success of girls and collegiate Black womyn. Although research has long shown that women, people of color and low- income communities are more vulnerable to natural hazards, the disproportionate effects of Hurricane Katrina and subsequent federal and state disaster response efforts forced the national spotlight on the institutional and systemic nature of racism, classism and sexism. Using Black feminism and radical planning theory, two lenses that provides a comprehensive framework for understanding racism, classism and sexism, this article examines the concept and literature of social vulnerability. I argue while social vulnerability research has made significant contributions to planners’ understandings of disasters and inequity, it fails to center community knowledge, identify intersectional oppressions and name them as such and encourage community activism, all of which are keys to making meaningful change. DRAFT—DO NOT CITE WITHOUT THE PERMISSION OF THE AUTHORS—DRAFT Fraga and Navarro 1 Our discussion of Latinas in Latino politics classifies the literature into two major analytical categories. The first category identifies largely descriptive differences between Latino men and Latinas.1 The differences focus on the traditional dimensions of political analysis including public opinion, political participation with special emphasis on organizational leadership, and electoral representation. The second category we term prescriptive possibilities. This literature focuses on Latina feminist writings and emerging models of Latina legislative leadership. Unlike the first category noted above, these literatures explicitly develop understandings of the transformative, i.e., institution changing, potential of news ways of conceptualizing the interests of Latino communities and developing strategies of policy advocacy built on the interest intersectionality of Latinas in the American polity. It is this later category that we find the most intellectually rich and most likely to affect the future practice(s) of Latino politics, and especially the role of Latinas in that Latino politics. -
Three Waves of Feminism
01-Krolokke-4666.qxd 6/10/2005 2:21 PM Page 1 1 Three Waves of Feminism From Suffragettes to Grrls e now ask our readers to join us in an exploration of the history of W feminism or, rather, feminisms: How have they evolved in time and space? How have they framed feminist communication scholarship in terms of what we see as a significant interplay between theory and politics? And how have they raised questions of gender, power, and communication? We shall focus our journey on the modern feminist waves from the 19th to the 21st century and underscore continuities as well as disruptions. Our starting point is what most feminist scholars consider the “first wave.” First-wave feminism arose in the context of industrial society and liberal politics but is connected to both the liberal women’s rights movement and early socialist feminism in the late 19th and early 20th century in the United States and Europe. Concerned with access and equal opportunities for women, the first wave continued to influence feminism in both Western and Eastern societies throughout the 20th century. We then move on to the sec- ond wave of feminism, which emerged in the 1960s to 1970s in postwar Western welfare societies, when other “oppressed” groups such as Blacks and homosexuals were being defined and the New Left was on the rise. Second-wave feminism is closely linked to the radical voices of women’s empowerment and differential rights and, during the 1980s to 1990s, also to a crucial differentiation of second-wave feminism itself, initiated by women of color and third-world women. -

When Life Gives You Lemons, "Get In Formation:" A Black Feminist Analysis of Beyonce's Visual Album, Lemonade Abstract Beyonce's visual album, Lemonade, has been considered a Black feminist piece of work because of the ways in which it centralizes the experiences of Black women, including their love relationships with Black men, their relationships with their mothers and daughters, and their relationships with other Black women. The album shows consistent themes of motherhood, the "love and trouble tradition," and Afrocentrism. Because of its hint of Afrocentrism, however, Lemonade can be argued as an anti Black feminist work because Afrocentrism holds many sexist beliefs of Black women. This essay will discuss the ways in which Lemonade's inextricable influences of Black feminism and Afrocentrism, along with other anti Black feminist notions, can be used as a consciousness-raising tool. -

Chicana/o Artivism: Judy Baca’s Digital Work with Youth of Color Chela Sandoval University of California, Santa Barbara, Department of Chicano/a Studies Guisela Latorre Ohio State University, Department of Women’s Studies Introduction Arnoldo’s Brother (see Figure 1) watches us watching him from out of one of the most powerful digital media labs in the country, the Ce´sar Cha´vez Digital Mural Lab, located in the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC), a production facility devoted to creating large-scale digitally generated murals, educational DVDs, animations, community archives, and digital art. Arnoldo’s Brother, a digital mural created by Chicana artist Judy Baca and UCLA students, is an avatar rising out of these technologies, a modern-day Chicano cyborg. Arnoldo is a fourteen-year-old boy, a figure created through the minds and souls of the young people who have come to the SPARC teaching facility, led by Baca, to testify and witness on behalf of their communities. Their offering to SPARC is a photo of one of these artists’ younger brother, which they then Photoshopped into an artwork that tells one story of Chicana/o consciousness at the turn of the millennium. -
Lemonade and Black Women As Audiences and Subjects

Volume 14, Issue 2 November 2017 ‘She made angry Black woman something that people would want to be’: Lemonade and Black women as audiences and subjects Ashton Toone, Amanda Nell Edgar & Kelly Ford, University of Memphis, USA. Abstract: Based on interviews with 35 audience members, this essay argues that audiences used Beyoncé’s hour-long visual album, Lemonade, as a Two-Way Mirror to understand racial and gendered identities through the lenses of social movements, identity politics, and relationality. Our findings support Sandvoss (2005) and other audience scholars in that the Black women we interviewed used the album’s emphasis on Black femininity as a ‘mirror’ that uplifted their own racial and gendered identities. White and male audiences, on the other hand, used the album less for fashioning their own sense of self, instead using Lemonade as a lens to gaze into a realm of Black femininity as presented by Beyoncé, a Black woman herself. While in some cases, this perspective drove White and male participants’ empathy and support of the Black women’s experiences represented in the album, their understandings also risked one-dimensionality. (Malcolm X, Los Angeles, May 1962) For the last few years, Beyoncé has sparked conversation both in the media and in scholarly literature for her recent singles like ‘Formation’, her 2016 Super Bowl performance that Page 203 Volume 14, Issue 2 November 2017 nodded to the Black Panther Party, and most recently her visual album Lemonade that celebrates Black culture and depicts the realities of social justice issues. -

Introduction Black Lives Matter is an organization and movement created in 2012 in response to George Zimmerman’s acquittal for the murder of Trayvon Martin. This event created a platform for Black women to address the inequalities and injustices marginalized groups experience in America. Because of the inclusive nature and wide range of focuses in Black Lives Matter, it is evident that this organization and movement is based in Black feminism, rather than feminism. This distinction can be seen in the comparison between feminism and Black feminism frameworks in regards to the structure and actions of Black Lives Matter.
