En este estudio se presentan claves para la identi®cacioÂn de adultos, caracteres diagnoÂstico, descripciones y distribuciones. 321 322 THE COLEOPTERISTS BULLETIN 56(3), 2002 Species in the genus Brachysternus GueÂrin-MeÂneville are distinctive mem- bers of the scarab subfamily Rutelinae. These bright green, moderately sized (about 2 centimeters) scarabs are commonly observed feeding on Nothofagus (Nothofagaceae) trees or congregating at lights at night in mid-elevation forests in southern South America. In Chile, the common name for this insect is ``pololos'' (beetles), ``pololos verdes'' (green beetles), ``San Juanes,'' and ``San Juanitos.'' Although members of the genus are distinctive, no reliable source has been available for identi®cation of the species. This research pro- vides a revision of species in the genus and discusses the taxonomic history and distribution of the group. Since the description of the ®rst species in the genus Brachysternus,24 species or subspecies have been included in a genus that, based on our work, includes only seven valid species. This over description of species was brought about due to several factors: 1) lack of communication between concurrent ruteline workers, 2) high intraspeci®c variation, 3) poor characterization of the species and of related genera that led to taxonomic confusion, 4) paucity of specimens for examination that led to a narrow characterization of species, 5) and a series of taxonomic mistakes that were compounded over 150 years. The genus Brachysternus is characterized by the following: 1) labrum pro- duced vertically with respect to the clypeus, 2) mentum at the apex with a narrow, median process (Fig. 3), 3) elytral margin with a membranous border (Fig. 9), 4) apex of the protibia lacking an apicomedial spur (Fig. 8), 5) male genitalia with well developed ventral and lateral sclerites (Figs. 28±34), 6) last abdominal sternite of the female moderately or deeply emarginate (Figs. 12± 13), and 7) generally green or greenish dorsal coloration. The genus is a mem- ber of the monophyletic subtribe Brachysternina (tribe Anoplognathini) (see Smith 2002). Although we have demonstrated that the Brachysternina is a monophyletic group, we believe that phylogenetic analyses at the tribal level are needed to address relationships among the orthochilous rutelines: Spo- dochlamyini, Geniatini, Anoplognathini, and Adoretini. As a result of our con- tinuing studies with the Rutelinae, we have discovered many shared characters between the Geniatini and Anoplognathini. Generally, the Geniatini possess expanded and dorsoventrally ¯attened tarsomeres (see Jameson [1990] for a key to tribes of Rutelinae) which separates them from the Anoplognathini. However, some taxa within these groups cannot be separated using this char- acter. For example, Geniatosoma Costa Lima (Geniatini) lacks expanded and ¯attened tarsomeres, and Mimadoretus Arrow (Anoplognathini) possesses slightly expanded and ¯attened tarsomeres. Results of phylogenetic analyses of the orthochilous rutelines may substantially revise our understanding of ruteline evolution and biogeography. This paper is the ®rst in a series of three in this issue of The Coleopterists Bulletin that revises the subtribe Brachysternina. The second part is a synopsis of Hylamorpha by Ratcliffe and Ocampo (2002). The third part is a revision of Aulacopalpus and phylogeny, biogeography, key to genera, and catalog of the Brachysternina by Smith (2002). Taxonomic History of the Genus Brachysternus GueÂrin-MeÂneville named Brachysternus for its short (brachy-) mesosternum (-sternus) which is not produced beyond the apex of the mesocoxae. The genus was established in 1831 by GueÂrin-MeÂneville in the Atlas of the ``Voyage Autour du Monde. In Parastasia the beetle (imago) visits flowers, and the grub (larva) lives in dead trunks of more or less hard wood. In Anomala the beetle is a leaf feeder, and the grub lives in the earth, feeding on the roots of living plants. In Adoretus the beetle feeds on flowers and leaves; the grub lives in the earth and feeds upon the roots of living plants. In some species of Anornala and Adoretus, both beetles and grubs are noxious to culti­ vated plants, and it has been observed that eggs or young grubs of these species have been transported in the soil-wrapping around roots or parts of roots of such plants as the banana, cassava, and sugar cane. DISTRIBUTION With the exception of two species, the Rutelinae found on the continent of Australia (including Tasmania) belong to the subtribe Anoplognathina. The first exception is Anomala (Aprosterna) antiqua Gyllenhal (australasiae Blackburn), found in northeast Queensland in cultivated places near the coast. This species is abundant from British India and southeast China in the west to New Guinea in the east, stated to be noxious here and there to cultivated plants. It was probably brought to Queensland by brown or white men, as either eggs or young grubs in soil around roots of bananas, cassava, or sugar cane.

Numerous corrections are given to various errors that are commonly perpetuated in the literature.

Loch CSIRO Entomology, c/ – Department of Conservation and Land Management, Brain St, Manjimup, WA 6258, Australia and National Wine and Grape Industry Centre, Locked Bag 588, Charles Sturt University, NSW 2678, Australia Abstract 1 In south-western Australia, Eucalyptus globulus plantations are defoliated by a complex of beetle species, yet only scant information exists on these species under such climatic conditions. To improve management of these defoliating beetles in the region, canopy fogging and shoot clipping were conducted in plan- tations between 1999 and 2002 to identify and document the phenology of the beetle species present. 2 Eucalyptus weevil, Gonipterus scutellatus , was the most common and destruc- tive defoliating beetle. Gonipterus scutellatus undergoes one principal generation each year with a lesser second generation or cohort in some seasons, which con- trasts greatly with reports of two to four annual generations for the species in other regions. This limited reproduction by G. scutellatus may be due to the limi- ted availability from summer onwards of new flushing foliage, which is essential for feeding and oviposition. 3 Several species of chrysomelid beetles were collected in plantations, but these were present in much lower numbers than G. scutellatus and were only a minor concern. However, some species, such as Chrysophtharta variicollis , appear to be capable of developing short-lived outbreaks. 4 A diverse suite of natural enemies was fogged from plantations but they were significantly less abundant than defoliating beetles and are not likely to provide significant control of beetles.
