Self-Love and Self-Conceit*
Self-Love and Self-Conceit* Owen Ware April 15, 2020 Introduction Kant holds a rather unflattering view of human nature in the Critique of Practi- cal Reason. All of us, he believes, are prone to ‘self-love’ (Eigenliebe), a tendency to satisfy our needs and inclinations, and to ‘self-conceit’ (Eigendünkel), a ten- dency to treat our happiness as a source of law (KpV 5:73.9-14). Surprisingly, however, Kant says little to explain why we are prone to self-conceit, and his few scattered remarks on the issue are quite puzzling. In one place he says that ‘if self-love makes itself lawgiving and the unconditional practical principle, it can be called self-conceit’ (KpV 5:74.18-19). Yet this is far from clear. Given the natural and innocent tendency we have to self-love, what would lead us to treat our happiness as a lawgiving principle? What, in short, would lead us to self-conceit in the first place? My discussion in this paper divides into six sections. In sections 1-2, I con- sider two possible ways of explaining the origin of self-conceit. One is to con- sider self-conceit in terms of how we compare ourselves with others; the other is to consider it in terms of how our sensible inclinations move us to act. Find- ing neither view satisfying, I then proceed to motivate an alternative account in sections 3-4. I argue that we find an illuminating parallel in Kant’s account of ‘transcendental illusion’ in the first Critique: the illusion we face in our search for systematic unity of knowledge. -

Dostoevsky does not simply aim to create compelling accounts of fiction in his numerous works; he truly tries to present an accurate portrayal of human needs, urges, and life itself. Though many writers try to grapple with an understanding of the human person, one of the major aspects of Dostoevsky’s writing that separates him from his contemporaries is the fact that he is not afraid to portray the complexities of an individual’s mental health. What makes such an endeavor even more incredible is that he is writing during a time period (the mid to late 19th century) when psychology had not yet grown into a unique discipline. -

A Symposium: Morality Reconsidered David Hume and the Origin of Modern Rationalism Donald Livingston Emory University In “How Desperate Should We Be?” Claes Ryn argues that “morality” in modern societies is generally understood to be a form of moral rationalism, a matter of applying preconceived moral principles to particular situations in much the same way one talks of “pure” and “applied” geometry. Ryn finds a num- ber of pernicious consequences to follow from this rationalist model of morals. First, the purity of the principles, untainted by the particularities of tradition, creates a great distance between what the principles demand and what is possible in actual experience. The iridescent beauty and demands of the moral ideal distract the mind from what is before experience.1 The practical barriers to idealistically demanded change are oc- cluded from perception, and what realistically can and ought to be done is dismissed as insufficient. And “moral indignation is deemed sufficient”2 to carry the day in disputes over policy. Further, the destruction wrought by misplaced idealistic change is not acknowledged to be the result of bad policy but is ascribed to insufficient effort or to wicked persons or groups who have derailed it. In his most important writing in this field called "Politics", Aristotle classified authority in the form of two main parts: the correct authority and moose authority. In this sense, correct forms of government are 1.basileus, 2.aristocracy and 3.politeia. These forms of government are based on the common good. Bad or moose forms of government are those that are based on the property of an individual or small governmental structures and they are: 1.tiranny, 2.oligarchy and 3.democracy. Also, Aristotle's political thinking is not separate from the ethical principles so he states that the government should be reflected in the true virtue that is "law" or the "golden mean". It eludes categorization into our current understandings of work and play while at the same time challenging those very conceptions. Here, I attempt to come to grips with Aristotelian leisure by (1) demonstrating its centrality in Aristotle’s thought, (2) explaining leisure as primarily a ‘way of being’ rather than merely the absence of occupation or one of several preconditions to the virtues, and (3) exploring what lei- sure might mean to liberal democracy. As a ‘way of being’, Aristotelian leisure is more than an absence of work, but is a positive comportment that itself requires virtues, material means, and an education. Keywords leisure – Aristotle – political science Leisure is a challenge to contemporary liberal democratic life. As Tocqueville assessed, the democratic citizen views labor as a ‘necessary, natural, and respectable condition of humanity’.1 Notable contemporary thinkers on the subject of leisure, especially Pieper and Huizinga,2 are in agreement that lei- sure does operate as this kind of challenge. Article Narcissism and Subjective Arousal in Response to Sexual Aggression: The Mediating Role of Perceived Power Virgil Zeigler-Hill * and David Andrews Department of Psychology, Oakland University, Rochester, MI 48309, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: The present research examined the associations that narcissistic personality features had with subjective arousal in response to sexually aggressive behaviors, as well as whether these associ- ations were mediated by the power that was believed to accompany these behaviors. Participants were 221 community members (115 women, 106 men) who completed a self-report instrument that captured narcissistic admiration (an agentic form of narcissism) and narcissistic rivalry (an antagonistic form of narcissism). In addition, participants were asked to rate how powerful they would expect to feel if they actually engaged in an array of sexually aggressive behaviors (e.g., “Tying up a person during sexual intercourse against her/his will”) as well as how sexually aroused they would be by each behavior. A multilevel mediation analysis revealed that both narcissistic admiration and narcissistic rivalry were positively associated with subjective arousal in response to sexual aggression and that these associations were mediated by the perceived power that was believed to accompany these sexually aggressive behaviors. These results suggest that perceptions of power may play an important role in the connections that narcissistic personality features have with subjective arousal in response to sexually aggressive behavior for both men and women. This discussion will focus on the implications of these results for understanding the connections between narcissism and sexual aggression in both men and women. -

Sergio Benvenuto ____________________________________________________________________ Keywords: Dora’s Case – Hysteric’s Wish – Freud’s Countertransference – Dora’s Dreams - Lacan’s Approach to Hysterics - Summary: The author re-reads Dora's case, stressing how much in fact the psychoanalytic theory of hysteria in general has not solved the enigma of the hysterical form of life. He remarks also that by the word "hysteria" we can no longer consider just some specific symptoms--notably conversion or somatization--but rather observe a general vocation for a lack of satisfaction by a subject. The author tries to account for the reasons of this constitutive lack of satisfaction (a potential enjoyment which cannot become actual), highlighting the hysterical capacity for multiple identifications and role-playing. Reconsidering Lacan's approach to hysteria--which is focused on the hysteric's basic homosexual position--the author objects that hysteria goes beyond this position to occupy all the available identificatory and objectal positions. 1. “What the devil does she want?” Is there anything left to say about Dora’s Case, which Freud published in 1905? Hasn’t everything already been said and written about the girl whom Freud saw for less than three months over a century ago, after what has been written since Freud? Isn’t what’s been said on hysterics in the 19-20th century enough on the whole? A century after the invention of psychoanalysis, born as a cure for hysteria, isn’t it time to shelve, once and for all, this “magnificent child of psychoanalysis” (as Nasio calls hysteria) among the problems that have been solved? But, after having read over several decades Freud’s texts on hysterics, there is a hard core I still don’t quite understand. -

Subtypes, Dimensions, Levels, and Mental States in Narcissism and Narcissistic Personality Disorder Kenneth N. Levy Pennsylvania State University Various conceptualizations of subtypes, levels, and dimensions of narcissism and narcissistic person- ality disorder (NPD) are considered with a particular focus on overt grandiose presentations and covert vulnerable presentations. Evidence supporting this distinction and clinical vignettes to illustrate it are presented as well as their implications for clinical work with NPD patients. The research and clinical evidence points to the conclusion that these broad categorical subtypes are better conceptualized as dimensions on which individual patients vary on relative levels, thus suggesting that grandiose and vul- nerable presentations represent two sides of the same coin. However, the definition of NPD articulated in the DSM-III and its successors, DSM-III-R and DSM-IV, has been criticized for failing to fully capture the intended clinical phenomena (Cooper & Ronningstam, 1992; Gabbard, 1989; Gunderson et al., 1991). These authors have noted that the DSM criteria have focused narrowly on aspects of the conceptual approaches of Kernberg and Millon, emphasizing the more overt form of narcissism. However, theoretical and empirical work is now converging to suggest that NPD is not a homogenous disorder and subtypes likely exist within this group. -

Aviation Instructor's Handbook (FAA-H-8083-9) Chapter 2: Human Behavior Introduction Derek’s learner, Jason, is very smart and able to retain a lot of information, but has a tendency to rush through the less exciting material and shows interest and attentiveness only when performing tasks that he finds to be interesting. This concerns Derek because he is worried that Jason will overlook many important details and rush through procedures. For a homework assignment Jason was told to take a very thorough look at Preflight Procedures and that for his next flight lesson they would discuss each step in detail. As Derek predicted, Jason found this assignment to be boring and was not prepared. Derek knows that Jason is a “thrill seeker” as he talks about his business, which is a wilderness adventure company. Derek wants to find a way to keep Jason focused and help him find excitement in all areas of learning so that he will understand the complex art of flying and aircraft safety. Learning is the acquisition of knowledge or understanding of a subject or skill through education, experience, practice, or study. This chapter discusses behavior and how it affects the learning process. An instructor seeks to understand why people act the way they do and how people learn. An effective instructor uses knowledge of human behavior, basic human needs, the defense mechanisms humans use that prevent learning, and how adults learn in order to organize and conduct productive learning activities. Definitions of Human Behavior The study of human behavior is an attempt to explain how and why humans function the way they do.
