jazzweek.com • Dec. 5, 2005 JazzWeek 9 Radio Q&A: Blaise Lantana Show title and hours: Classic Jazz, 7 to 11 pm Monday through Friday Station: KJZZ, Phoenix, Arizona Wattage: 100,000

itting next to Blaise for a JazzWeek panel I found her to be thoughtful, quick on her feet and to know her stuff. Her SQ&A is much the same way, though the leap into the cosmos at the end of this piece caught me by surprise (I’m afraid to ask about importance of the shift in 2012 because I don’t know if I want to know the answer), but those unexpected turns of con- versation are the main reasons to put people on the spot for these back-and-forths. Good conver- sations, like good jazz, should always venture to places unknown. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: What keeps getting you out of bed in morn- ing after all these years in radio? Blaise Lantana: The sun, streaming through my window at noon and the fun of having a job where I get to sit in a quiet room and choose music that I love to listen to and share it with people who are just discovering jazz or who have been reveling in it for years. Radio is such a wonderful way to share jazz and spread the word about this exciting and unique music. Just last week someone called when I played “All Blues” and asked, “What was that beautiful waltz?” Just when I thought everyone was tired of Kind Of Blue. How would you describe KJZZ’s presence in the Phoe- nix area? Phoenix metro is pretty large, with 2.8 million radio lis- teners according to Arbitron. Our share is about 250,000 continued ... jazzweek.com • Dec. 5, 2005 JazzWeek 10 Radio Q&A: Blaise Lantana (continued)

plus the repeaters we have around the state, so we have room to reach more of that community. We are probably best known as the NPR, Car Talk, Prairie Home Companion station. I imagine your audience skews a little old because of the climate. Is there certain things or bases that you cover to address that? We have NPR and local news from 3 a.m. to 7 p.m. then jazz. Our main de- mographic is 35 to 64 and that is over 2/3 of our audience, jazz fits right in Just last week there although jazz gets more high school kids listening than NPR does. The someone called market is younger than you think, because there are so many jobs and so much construction – we are one of the fastest growing counties in the country, only when I played Las Vegas is growing faster. I make as many events as possible tired of Kind and we MC festivals and get a banner up if we can. Of Blue. How many jazz shows are there? All jazz during the week is locally produced from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., while week- end nights are a little different – Saturday morning we run Jazzworks from 1 to 5 a.m. Saturday night we run Marian McPartland, Riverwalk Jazz, Ameri- can Routes and then locally produced from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. After that Sun- day morning we go to Jazzworks from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday night we are blues from 5 p.m. to 11 a.m., which is our most listened to music show. A Chicago harmonica player, and blues club owner, Bob Corri- torre has been doing this show for over 15 years. How would you describe your own show and tastes? My show is not always my taste and I have to be careful not to get too esoteric. My listeners aren’t all jazz aficionados, although some are, most are just dig- ging the sound and discovering new artists to listen to, like Chet Baker. Is it complicated to be both a broadcaster and musician? nights a week in the season. Summers here are pretty dead; 115 degrees in- spires exodus. I love the excitement of playing jazz with good players – there is nothing like it. But whenever I get a poorly promoted gig, or I drive a few hun- dred miles and the venue is closed and forgot to notify the band, or I don’t get paid and have to cover the band, or a player shows up wasted or hung over, I thank God for my straightforward solid little radio career. It gives me the free- dom to take the jobs I want to take, not the ones I need to pay the rent. Although I love playing and performing I also enjoy the quiet time where the audience is on the other side of the signal and we’re listening together. Having watched audiences from the stage for so many years, I have an innate aware- ness of when a listener tunes out, and my job is to keep them from hitting the button. You’ve bounced around the country a bit. Are you staying put in Phoenix? For now I’m staying. I re- ally love what I do, and there aren’t a lot of jobs like this around the world, but I’m keeping an eye open for one in the south of France or Spain. One of the great joys of this job is discovering a player that is wonderful and they don’t always come from a known record label, so I try to hear as much as I can. I don’t want to miss anything. I see that you have an album out? How has it worked out? Are you going to do another? I’ve done two albums so far with standards and originals, one’s a quartet with organ and sax and one’s a guitar trio. ket nationally because I KNOW how much material is out there and my ears are very critical. I am doing a new one now with a piano quartet and different horn players, and that should be done in a few months. What’s something that other people might not know about that has you pretty excited right now? I like Organissimo and their very modern compositions that hit a good groove. Of course I’m from Philly so I’m partial to that organ trio sound. I’m also very impressed with young piano player Eldar Djangirov and I know he could be huge because I get calls EVERY TIME I play his version of “Moanin”. On a non-musical note, I’m tuning into the changing energy of the planet.
