Li, com maior prazer, a entrevista concedida ao Diário de Notícias, através da qual o Grande Oriente do Brasil manifesta à nação a sua intenção de, finalmente, fazer com que a Maçonaria venha a ocupar na vida brasileira o papel que lhe cabe e sempre lhe coube desde a Independência -- que, como todos sabemos, foi feita por mações. Relembrei nessa ocasião minha conversa com o senhor, e as nossas palavras de despedida, nas quais buscou o senhor gentilmente trazer à minha atenção o fato de que (na sua opinião) a Igreja Católica Romana é uma boa introdução à vida adulta para crianças. Eu lhe disse então: "Mas a Maçonaria é infinitamente melhor", e aproveito esta oportunidade para repetir e ampliar estas palavras. Eu não quis discutir a validade ou falta de validade da Igreja Romana como campo de treino para crianças, porque não é assunto que se possa, propriamente, discutir. É assunto que deve -- repito, deve -- ser pesquisado por todo homem consciencioso e responsável, principalmente por maçon de alto grau e no Brasil, onde essa Igreja teve tanta influência na formação psíquica do povo -- com os resultados que estamos vend o no presente. Para esta pesquisa, vitalmente necessária a todos os maçons neste momento de transição, é necessário uma análise cuidadosa da evidência espalhada pelas obras de muitos pesquisadores imparciais e fidedignos; e isto não pode ser resumido numa breve discussão. -

The curators have announced their selection of artists for the 2006 Whitney Biennial, which opens to the public on March 2, and remains on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art through May 28, 2006. The list of participating artists appears at the end of this release. Whitney Biennial 2006: Day for Night is curated by Chrissie Iles, the Whitney’s Anne & Joel Ehrenkranz Curator, and Philippe Vergne, the Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. The Biennial’s lead sponsor is Altria. LETTER TO A BRAZILIAN MASON UNEXPURGATED Marcelo Ramos Motta Rio de Janeiro, 9 July 1963 e.v. Dear Dr.G.: Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. I read with pleasure in the news that Brazilian Masonry has finally decided to take once more an active role in the affairs of this nation. I remembered then my conversation with you, and our parting, when you remarked that in your opinion the Roman Church was a good introduction to adult life for children. I told you then: "Perhaps, but Masonry is infinitely better"; and I take this opportunity to repeat and enlarge that statement. I did not wish at the time to discuss the validity or lack of validity of the Roman Church as a training ground for children. One cannot discuss this subject. It is a subject that must - I repeat, must - be researched by every responsible individual, particularly a high grade Mason, and particularly in Brazil, where that church had so much influence in the psychological makeup of the people - with the results that we see at present. For such a research, vitally important at this point, a careful analysis of evidence scattered in the works of many impartial and reputable observers is essential - an analysis that cannot be made in a conversation or summed up in an argument. I know the facts; you did not, at the time; assertions by me, though based on facts, would have seemed to you biased and unfair; the more so because you, naturally, suspect me and my intentions - Thelemites are not better liked or trusted at present than the Gnostics and Essenes were in their day. -

Downloaded from http://hdl.handle.net/10072/394685 Griffith Research Online https://research-repository.griffith.edu.au The Muse of Secrecy: A Qabalistic Examination of Symbolist Poetry and the Music of Claude Debussy Christina Churchill MMus Perf Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of Doctor of Philosophy August 2019 School of Humanities Griffith University i Abstract The Qabalah played an important role to a number of esoteric and cultural groups in Paris from the 1840s through to the end of the 19th century. This Qabalistic brand of esotericism was spearheaded by Eliphas Lévi who combined facets of the Cabala of the Renaissance that held a Christian view of ancient Jewish Kabbalah, with Gnostic, Hermetic, Pythagorean, and Neoplatonic sources. Initiates sought the hidden and cryptographic meaning of Qabalistic texts and were attracted to the concept of a Divine language and its evocatory potential. This thesis shows how esoteric ideas were circulated though networks and clubs, including Le Chat Noir, Librairie de l'Art indépendant, and Mallarmé’s Tuesday salons. It argues that the Qabalah was especially important in these circles through the influence of Lévi, Gérard Encausse (Papus), and Joséphin Péladan. Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Verlaine, and Debussy, along with other Symbolist poets and composers such as Villiers de l’Isle Adam, J.-K. -

Celebrating Jonas Mekas Birth of a Nation February 13, 2019 — Artists’ Television Access presented in association with the Canyon Cinema Foundation Jonas Mekas (1922–2019), tireless advocate for the underdog, was without a doubt the world’s foremost advocate for personal/underground/avant-garde cinema. As a poet, publisher, filmmaker, curator, critic, archivist, rabble rouser and hopeless romantic, his cultural influence cannot be underestimated. Born in Semeniskiai, Lithuania, Mekas emigrated to the U.S. in 1949 (after imprisonment in a German labor camp and life in a displaced persons camp), fell in love with New York City and immediately took to filmmaking, a practice he maintained to the end of his life, eventually pioneering the personal diary into an epic film genre. By 1955 he was co-publisher (with his brother Adolfas) of Film Culture, a journal articulating the aesthetics of underground cinema which was published quarterly until 1995, while his Village Voice column “Movie Journal”—which ran 1958–1978—presented weekly updates on the New York underground scene of the day while cultivating community and bracingly attacking mainstream cinema. A visionary infrastructuralist, Mekas’ establishment of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative (in 1962) and Anthology Film Archives (in 1970) ensured that underground and personal film would be preserved and cherished for generations. In this screening San Francisco Cinematheque and Canyon Cinema celebrate the life of Jonas Mekas with a special screening of his 1997 film Birth of a Nation (1997): 160 portraits/appearances, sketches and glimpses of avant-garde, independent filmmakers and film activists, filmed 1955—1996, a celebration of Mekas’ artistic community and adopted homeland.
