  • Stockholm's Archipelago and Strindberg's
Scandinavica Vol 52 No 2 2013 Stockholm’s Archipelago and Strindberg’s: Historical Reality and Modern Myth-Making Massimo Ciaravolo University of Florence Abstract The Stockholm Archipelago is ubiquitous in the prose, poetry, drama and non-fiction of August Strindberg. This article examines the interaction in Strindberg’s oeuvre between the city of Stockholm as civilized space and the wild space surrounding it, tracing the development of a literary myth of Eden in his work. Strindberg’s representations of the shifting relations between city and nature, it is argued, played (and still play) an important role in the cultural construction of mythologies of the loss of the wild space. The environments described in Strindberg’s texts are subject to changes, shifts and repetitions with variations, such that the archipelago in itself can be read as a mirror of the polyphony of points of view, the variability and the ambiguities we find in his oeuvre at large. Keywords August Strindberg, Stockholm Archipelago, city in literature, nature in literature, mythologies 52 Scandinavica Vol 52 No 2 2013 August Strindberg’s home town of Stockholm, together with its wilder counterpart, the archipelago or skärgård (literally meaning group, or circle, of islands and skerries), plays a large part in Strindberg’s literary universe as well as in his life. The archipelago is ubiquitous in his oeuvre; it occurs in prose as well as in poetry and in drama, and it characterizes both fiction, autobiography and non-fiction (essays, letters and diaries). It can sometimes provide the setting to whole works, but in a series of other works it can be included as one of the settings, or even be mentioned peripherally.

It is a great treasure at the disposal of those who live in or visit the capital region, with many different types of natural setting – everything from the rugged island of Bullerö in the outer archipelago that stretches eastward into the Baltic Sea, to sun-dappled broad-leaved woods along the shores of Lake Mälaren to the west. Consider the agricultural landscape at Angarn in Vallentuna which has been farmed for a thousand years, and the broad expanse of virgin forest at Tyresta in the Södertörn area – a wilderness area just twenty kilo- metres from the centre of Stockholm city.

By doing so, many cities have partly disconnected themselves from the environment by existing beyond the local hydrologic system. A circular water system, which reuse water within the technical water system, has the potential to improve the status of the environment and reduce pressure on existing water resources. As such it is an approach that receives increasing attention. This study aims to investigate how a circular water management approach can reduce freshwater consumption and decrease the human pressure on water resources through a case study of the island Sandön/Sandhamn in the Stockholm archipelago. A literature overview which identifies circular water management strategies have been performed along with a situation analysis of Sandön.

  • STIG LINDBERG 29 Maj 2021 – 30 Jan 2022 INTRODUKTION En Vacker Vårdag I Mitten På 1930-Talet Cyklade Tonåringen Stig Lindberg Rakt in I En Björk

  • URBAN FORM in the HELSINKI and STOCKHOLM CITY REGIONS City Regions from the Perspective of Urban Form and the Traffic System
REPORTS OF THE FINNISH ENVIRONMENT INSTITUTE 16 | 2015 This publication compares the development of the Helsinki and Stockholm AND CAR ZONES TRANSPORT PUBLIC DEVELOPMENT OF PEDESTRIAN, CITY REGIONS AND STOCKHOLM THE HELSINKI URBAN FORM IN city regions from the perspective of urban form and the traffic system. Urban Form in the Helsinki The viewpoint of the study centres on the notion of three urban fabrics – and Stockholm City Regions walking city, transit city and car city – which differ in terms of their physical structure and the travel alternatives they offer. Development of Pedestrian, Public Transport and Car Zones Based on the results of the study, growth in the Stockholm region has been channelled inward more strongly than in Helsinki, which has increased the structural density of Stockholm’s core areas. During recent years, however, Panu Söderström, Harry Schulman and Mika Ristimäki the Helsinki region has followed suit with the direction of migration turning from the peri-urban municipalities towards the city at the centre.
