EDVARD GRIEG: BETWEEN TWO WORLDS EDVARD GRIEG: BETWEEN TWO WORLDS By REBEKAH JORDAN A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts McMaster University © Copyright by Rebekah Jordan, April, 2003 MASTER OF ARTS (2003) 1vIc1vlaster University (1vIllSic <=riticisIll) HaIllilton, Ontario Title: Edvard Grieg: Between Two Worlds Author: Rebekah Jordan, B. 1vIus (EastIllan School of 1vIllSic) Sllpervisor: Dr. Hllgh Hartwell NUIllber of pages: v, 129 11 ABSTRACT Although Edvard Grieg is recognized primarily as a nationalist composer among a plethora of other nationalist composers, he is much more than that. While the inspiration for much of his music rests in the hills and fjords, the folk tales and legends, and the pastoral settings of his native Norway and his melodic lines and unique harmonies bring to the mind of the listener pictures of that land, to restrict Grieg's music to the realm of nationalism requires one to ignore its international character. In tracing the various transitions in the development of Grieg's compositional style, one can discern the influences of his early training in Bergen, his four years at the Leipzig Conservatory, and his friendship with Norwegian nationalists - all intricately blended with his own harmonic inventiveness -- to produce music which is uniquely Griegian. Though his music and his performances were received with acclaim in the major concert venues of Europe, Grieg continued to pursue international recognition to repudiate the criticism that he was only a composer of Norwegian music. In conclusion, this thesis demonstrates that the international influence of this so-called Norwegian maestro had a profound influence on many other composers and was instrumental in the development of Impressionist harmonies.

  • Grieg's Influence on Hanka Schjelderup Petzold
The International Edvard Grieg Society Grieg Conference in Copenhagen 2011 Grieg’s influence on Hanka Schjelderup Petzold Hikari Kobayashi Introduction Hanka Schjelderup Petzold (1862–1937) was the sister of Gerhard Schjelderup, a Norwegian composer and music critic. She arrived in Japan in 1909 to teach the piano and singing at the Tokyo Music School and lived there until her death1. Nurturing prominent Japanese musicians, she performed at concerts and received good reviews. Although she played an important role in the sphere of music in Japan, her achievements have not been researched extensively. The Schjelderup family and Edvard Grieg shared a deep bond. Over a hundred letters were exchanged between Gerhard Schjelderup and Grieg. In addition, Gerhard wrote a biography of Grieg2. Leis Schjelderup, Gerhard’s and Hanka’s sister, painted a portrait of Grieg, and there was a time when Grieg was captivated by her charms. Moreover, Hanka had personal correspondence with Grieg: her two letters to Grieg are preserved at the Bergen Public Library3. Therefore, she may have sensed a strong familiarity with Grieg’s music. Purpose of the presentation This presentation aims to investigate the influence of Grieg on Hanka Schjelderup Petzold and to examine how her music activities influenced the reception of Grieg’s music in Japan. I will focus on her performances of Grieg’s music after she arrived in Japan in 1909. 1 In 1949, the Tokyo Music School became the Faculty of Music at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. 2 Gerhard Schjelderup, Edvard Grieg og hans værker [Edvard Grieg and his works], Copenhagen: Gyldendal, 1903.

  • Vadim Repin, Violin, with Andrei Korobeinikov, Piano Program Notes
Vadim Repin, violin, with Andrei Korobeinikov, piano Program Notes Part: Fratres Born in Paide, September 11, 1935 In 1960, while still a student at the Talinn Conservatory, Arvo Pärt won national attention for his Nekrolog, dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust. It was the first work by an Estonian composer to use Schoenberg’s twelve-tone system so it created something of a scandal. The notoriety had its rewards, however, as it brought Pärt commissions from state sources and from cellist Rostropovich. Soon tired of his serial phase, Pärt began a series of alternations between creative output and withdrawal to search for a new style. One of his explorations came up with the collage technique, resulting in such compositions as his Collage on the Theme B-A-C-H (1964) and Second Symphony (1966). During the 1970s Pärt supported himself by writing some 50 film scores. His third symphony (1971) followed one of his “withdrawal” periods, in which he studied 14th – 15th century polyphony, from Machaut to Josquin. He followed another of his “creative silences” with For Alina (1976), a small piano piece of high and low extremes. Pärt said he reached a “new plateau” with this piece: “It was here that I discovered the triad series, which I made my simple, little guiding rule.” He has written in this triadic style, which he calls “tintinnabuli” (after the bell-like resemblance of notes in the triad), ever since, with only slight modifications. From 1982, when he moved to Berlin, he has composed primarily religious works for chorus or small vocal ensembles.

  • Edvard Grieg (1843 - 1907)
EDVARD GRIEG (1843 - 1907) When Edvard Grieg grew up, Bergen was a small and busy European town. All through its past as a Hanseatic city, Bergen had established a net of connections that made it the only continental Norwegian city. The main business was the trade with fish and other products typical for the coast. There was a close contact with the rest of Europe, a fact that is easily retraceable in the origin of the bergener. Most of the families within the city limits had ancestors in Denmark, Germany, Scotland, England, the Netherlands and other European nations. Bergen was also a meltingpot for the population along the Norwegian coast. Edvard Griegøs family was a typical Bergen- family: His great grandfather Alexander Greig (later changed to Grieg) came to the city from Cairnbulg close to Aberdeen in Scotland in the 1770s. He founded the family business, which was trade with dried fish and lobster across the North sea. The raising of a child in a bourgeois family in the 19th century Norway often included teaching of music or other forms of art. Edvard Grieg´s grandparents were active in the society of music "Musikkselskapet Harmonien", one of the worlds oldest orchestras, founded in 1765. Edvard Grieg was also so lucky to have the best piano teacher in Bergen as a mother. Gesine Hagerup had studied at the musicconservatory in Hamburg, Germany, an education that usually was offered only to men. She played with "Harmonien" and at chamber music concerts in Bergen. CHILDHOOD AND YOUTH Edvard Grieg was born in Bergen 15th of June 1843, in the family´s house in Strandgaten 152.

  • Ludwig Van Beethoven in a Transcription of His Violin Concerto for String Orchestra
2 3 Dear Friends of the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, It is such a joy to be able to start our 2020-2021 season! In these difficult times we feel so fortunate to be able to play concerts for you. Like life, music is resilient and necessary. With this opening concert, we celebrate our beloved Ludwig van Beethoven in a transcription of his violin concerto for string orchestra. For Beethoven “Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy” and to me his music expresses a psychological and spiritual victory. Edvard Grieg’s Erotik and Holberg Suite are both marvels of lushness and beautiful string orchestra writing that will beautifully contrast Beethoven’s masterpiece. I am so proud of our MSO musicians and how resilient and artfully creative they are during these times of challenge, playing each and every note with heartfelt meaning. We are also blessed to have you as our audience and feel so excited to be sharing the music with you!
