  • Grieg's Influence on Hanka Schjelderup Petzold
The International Edvard Grieg Society Grieg Conference in Copenhagen 2011 Grieg’s influence on Hanka Schjelderup Petzold Hikari Kobayashi Introduction Hanka Schjelderup Petzold (1862–1937) was the sister of Gerhard Schjelderup, a Norwegian composer and music critic. She arrived in Japan in 1909 to teach the piano and singing at the Tokyo Music School and lived there until her death1. Nurturing prominent Japanese musicians, she performed at concerts and received good reviews. Although she played an important role in the sphere of music in Japan, her achievements have not been researched extensively. The Schjelderup family and Edvard Grieg shared a deep bond. Over a hundred letters were exchanged between Gerhard Schjelderup and Grieg. In addition, Gerhard wrote a biography of Grieg2. Leis Schjelderup, Gerhard’s and Hanka’s sister, painted a portrait of Grieg, and there was a time when Grieg was captivated by her charms. Moreover, Hanka had personal correspondence with Grieg: her two letters to Grieg are preserved at the Bergen Public Library3. Therefore, she may have sensed a strong familiarity with Grieg’s music. Purpose of the presentation This presentation aims to investigate the influence of Grieg on Hanka Schjelderup Petzold and to examine how her music activities influenced the reception of Grieg’s music in Japan. I will focus on her performances of Grieg’s music after she arrived in Japan in 1909. 1 In 1949, the Tokyo Music School became the Faculty of Music at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. 2 Gerhard Schjelderup, Edvard Grieg og hans værker [Edvard Grieg and his works], Copenhagen: Gyldendal, 1903.

  • Ernst-Günther Heinemann Paper 2007
Ernst-Günter Heinemann Some observations on preparing Henle Urtext editions of Grieg's music In 1948 Günter Henle began to build a library of source-critical editions of piano and chamber music by “classic” composers for his newly-founded company. It was his declared aim to present works in the versions in which their composers had released them for printing. Various stages of musical development, early sketches and versions were to be commented upon in the preface and in the notes section of the new editions, but were not to be reproduced in the musical text. In this way Henle’s concept differed from the style of modern “complete editions”, which give great weight to describing the genesis of a work (describing here means that the musical text of preliminary stages is edited and printed). By “classic” Henle meant works of all style periods that had insinuated themselves into domestic music-making and concert performance on account of their outstanding quality. Thus “classic” composers in this sense meant Grieg and Debussy as much as Bach and Beethoven. All projects were planned as “back list” titles, meaning that, once a work had been accepted for publication, it should remain in print. It is obvious that, on business grounds, only those titles that can show an assured level of distribution are of interest for this publishing agenda. Maintaining titles that have to be partly or completely revised at the time of reprinting is costly. Henle’s original idea of Urtext editions— as fixed and unchanging documents that could be republished unaltered—soon demonstrated itself to be illusory.

  • Wigmore Hall Summer Brochure 2015
!"# APRIL – JULY 2015 Welcome Keith Saunders John Butt and the Dunedin Consort shed fresh light on Bach’s St John Passion in their revelatory recording, hailed by Gramophone for its ‘naturalness and emotional honesty’. They bring their vision of the work to Wigmore Hall for a special Holy Week performance, projecting the vivid drama of Christ’s betrayal and suffering, and the profound humanity of Bach’s response to it. Andreas Scholl has inspired countless new listeners to fall in love with lesser-known works. His artistry reveals the timeless qualities of great music from the distant past, restoring the rhetorical power and emotional impact of pieces conceived for star performers of eighteenth-century Europe. Scholl’s latest Wigmore Hall programme explores the vitality of Italian cantatas by three masters of the genre and frames their work with the seductive songs of Venetian gondoliers. Formed 70 years ago, soon after the Second World War, the Borodin Quartet has become synonymous with the works of Shostakovich and Beethoven. The ensemble’s latest Wigmore Hall series offers a complete cycle of the two composers’ string quartets, works deeply inscribed in the group’s collective DNA. Our season-long Paul Lewis: A Celebration continues when the much-loved English pianist partners Allan Clayton in a work of timeless musical beauty and artistic truth. Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin, which was first performed at Wigmore Hall in 1903, explores a young man’s love, despair, contemplation of death and ultimate recognition of impermanence. Benjamin Ealovega Body and soul are united in Martin Fröst’s intensely focused approach Philippe Herreweghe and his Collegium Vocale Gent became pioneers of to making music.

    - 3rfmuU- 11111NAXOS Cello Sonata, Op. 36 Piano Sonata, Op. 7 Intermezzo I Dystein Birkeland, Cello HIvard Gimse, Piano Edvard Grieg (1 843 - 1907) Piano Sonata, Op. 7 Intermezzo in A Minor for Cello and Piano Cello Sonata, Op. 36 Edvard Grieg, arguably the most popular composer ever to emerge from the Scandinavian peninsula, was born in Bergen, Norway, in 1843. His father was a rich merchant of Scottish descent, his mother a gifted poet and musician, who was principally responsible for recognising young Edvard's talent, and began giving him piano lessons when he was six years old. His progress was fairly spectacular, but more importantly he already showed a greater interest in experimenting with his own ideas than playing the music of others. Edvard was a caring and sensitive child and, as is so often the case with the artistically prone, he endured a perfectly miserable schooling, being endlessly teased and derided for his interest in music. When he was fifteen, however, he was lucky enough to be granted an audience with the travelling violin virtuoso, Ole Bull, who was so impressed that he arranged for Grieg's transfer to the Leipzig Conservatory forthwith. This turned out to be something of a mixed blessing, for while Grieg was intuitively a child of the Romantic era, the tuition he received was severely traditional, based ostensibly on the classics of Bach and Mozart. He left the Conservatory claiming that he was as stupid as when he entered it. In 1862 Grieg returned briefly to Norway, before making for the Scandinavian cultural capital.

  • Fairy Tales and Western Piano Music
Two Roads Converged in a Wood: The Intersection of Fairy Tales and Western Piano Music Jane Ellen Heinrichs A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts University of Washington 2017 Reading Committee: Robin McCabe, Chair JoAnn Taricani Steven Morrison Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Music © Copyright 2017 Jane Ellen Heinrichs 2 University of Washington Abstract Two Roads Converged in a Wood: The Intersection of Fairy Tales and Western Piano Music Jane Ellen Heinrichs Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Dr. Robin McCabe School of Music The history of fairy tales is long and complex, extending back to shadowed origins in ancient cultures. The stories have been used for a kaleidoscope of purposes across centuries—for cultural identity and cohesion, for education in morality, for social interaction, for skill-building in speech and rhetoric, for psychoanalysis, for publishing and commerce, for film, visual arts and music. Historically, fairy tales had sporadic and effusive bursts of popularity, especially in the Italian Renaissance, during seventeenth-century France, and across nineteenth-century Europe and America. Western European and American composers were caught up in the enthusiasm for folktale and fairy tale collections published throughout Europe beginning with Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s first edition of tales in 1812. This dissertation focuses on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century composers who wrote fairy tale-based piano music in four countries: France, Norway, America and Germany. The highlighted composers and their folklore- influenced works include Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Edvard Grieg, Edward MacDowell and Franz Liszt. These composers’ works demonstrate the multi-national, deep current of 3 attraction that existed toward the tales, a genre which was not particularly suited to children until relatively recent history.
