While the inspiration for much of his music rests in the hills and fjords, the folk tales and legends, and the pastoral settings of his native Norway and his melodic lines and unique harmonies bring to the mind of the listener pictures of that land, to restrict Grieg's music to the realm of nationalism requires one to ignore its international character. In tracing the various transitions in the development of Grieg's compositional style, one can discern the influences of his early training in Bergen, his four years at the Leipzig Conservatory, and his friendship with Norwegian nationalists - all intricately blended with his own harmonic inventiveness -- to produce music which is uniquely Griegian. Though his music and his performances were received with acclaim in the major concert venues of Europe, Grieg continued to pursue international recognition to repudiate the criticism that he was only a composer of Norwegian music. In conclusion, this thesis demonstrates that the international influence of this so-called Norwegian maestro had a profound influence on many other composers and was instrumental in the development of Impressionist harmonies.

  • Grieg's Influence on Hanka Schjelderup Petzold
The International Edvard Grieg Society Grieg Conference in Copenhagen 2011 Grieg’s influence on Hanka Schjelderup Petzold Hikari Kobayashi Introduction Hanka Schjelderup Petzold (1862–1937) was the sister of Gerhard Schjelderup, a Norwegian composer and music critic. She arrived in Japan in 1909 to teach the piano and singing at the Tokyo Music School and lived there until her death1. Nurturing prominent Japanese musicians, she performed at concerts and received good reviews. Although she played an important role in the sphere of music in Japan, her achievements have not been researched extensively. The Schjelderup family and Edvard Grieg shared a deep bond. Over a hundred letters were exchanged between Gerhard Schjelderup and Grieg. In addition, Gerhard wrote a biography of Grieg2. Leis Schjelderup, Gerhard’s and Hanka’s sister, painted a portrait of Grieg, and there was a time when Grieg was captivated by her charms. Moreover, Hanka had personal correspondence with Grieg: her two letters to Grieg are preserved at the Bergen Public Library3. Therefore, she may have sensed a strong familiarity with Grieg’s music. Purpose of the presentation This presentation aims to investigate the influence of Grieg on Hanka Schjelderup Petzold and to examine how her music activities influenced the reception of Grieg’s music in Japan. I will focus on her performances of Grieg’s music after she arrived in Japan in 1909. 1 In 1949, the Tokyo Music School became the Faculty of Music at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. 2 Gerhard Schjelderup, Edvard Grieg og hans værker [Edvard Grieg and his works], Copenhagen: Gyldendal, 1903.

  • Grieg: Piano Works
griEg: PianO WOrKS Grieg’s composing hut fOrEWOrd from the Piano concerto and the Lyric Pieces , his piano repertoire is rarely heard on the concert platforms outside Scandinavia. On this album, i have sought to present the more familiar Lyric Pieces alongside the less well-known works: the Sonata, the Ballade (his most substantial solo piano work and a favourite of Brahms), and a selection of the wonderfully intriguing Slåtter . The Slåtter , grieg’s arrangements of Hardanger fiddle melodies, are for me the most interesting works of all. Written relatively late, they show grieg experimenting with bold harmonic clashes that foreshadow Bartók’s language. i am delighted to be able to conclude the album with an epilogue, a Lyric Piece by the acclaimed composer cheryl frances-Hoad. This is the first of a set of four Lyric Pieces cheryl will write for me, each inspired by a composer i feel a close connection to: grieg, Janáček, Schubert and ravel. We are grateful to the rvW Trust for their support of this commission. in preparation for this recording, i decided to visit norway again. i had the invaluable experience of hearing the Slåtter melodies in their original setting, as i was able to listen to and perform to the leading norwegian Hardanger fiddlers Knut Hamre and frank rolland. i am grateful to Eilif Løtveit for his historical insights on grieg and to the Troldhaugen Museum. none of this would have been possible without Laila nordø. The idea for this cd came after an invitation to give a recital in the concert hall next to grieg’s home, Troldhaugen, in Bergen two years ago.

Two things in particular stick in the memory: the warmth of tone of Grieg’s 1892 Steinway piano, which Tom had the privilege of playing; and the extraordinary natural beauty of the surroundings, with Grieg’s composing hut overlooking the serene Nordås Lake. Grieg is a composer we have both adored since childhood. Like the environment in which he composed, his music has a disarming honesty and naturalness, infused with lyrical warmth, folk-inspired beauty and echoes of the Norwegian landscape. Of Grieg’s three violin sonatas, it is the third which has become part of the core repertoire, and it was one of the first collaborative works Elena ever played.

Edvard Grieg’s Ballade in the Form of Variations on a Norwegian Melody, Op.24, for Piano, and Old Norwegian Melody with Variations, Op.51, for Two Pianos: An Analytical Overview and Interpretive Study of the Variation Procedure D.M.A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Amalia Sagona, B.M., M.M. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2009 Document Committee: Steven Glaser, Advisor Kenneth Williams Danielle Fosler-Lussier Copyright by Amalia Sagona 2009 Abstract Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), Norway’s greatest composer of the 19th century, is particularly known as a lyrical composer of songs and piano miniatures. The great majority of his piano works are short character pieces influenced by the Romantic tradition (mostly in three-part form), with a large part of them especially characterized by the use of Norwegian folk and folk-like melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. Grieg’s larger works employing the piano (solo or chamber music) and exploring the sonata form include his Piano Sonata in E Minor, Op.7, a number of chamber music compositions (three Sonatas for Violin and Piano and one Sonata for Cello and Piano), and the most familiar Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op.16. Moreover, his larger-scale piano works include two important essays in the variation form: the Ballade in the Form of Variations on a Norwegian Melody, Op.24, for piano, and the Old Norwegian Melody (Romance) with Variations, Op.51, for two pianos.
