  • Bird Ecology, Conservation, and Community Responses
BIRD ECOLOGY, CONSERVATION, AND COMMUNITY RESPONSES TO LOGGING IN THE NORTHERN PERUVIAN AMAZON by NICO SUZANNE DAUPHINÉ (Under the Direction of Robert J. Cooper) ABSTRACT Understanding the responses of wildlife communities to logging and other human impacts in tropical forests is critical to the conservation of global biodiversity. I examined understory forest bird community responses to different intensities of non-mechanized commercial logging in two areas of the northern Peruvian Amazon: white-sand forest in the Allpahuayo-Mishana Reserve, and humid tropical forest in the Cordillera de Colán. I quantified vegetation structure using a modified circular plot method. I sampled birds using mist nets at a total of 21 lowland forest stands, comparing birds in logged forests 1, 5, and 9 years postharvest with those in unlogged forests using a sample effort of 4439 net-hours. I assumed not all species were detected and used sampling data to generate estimates of bird species richness and local extinction and turnover probabilities. During the course of fieldwork, I also made a preliminary inventory of birds in the northwest Cordillera de Colán and incidental observations of new nest and distributional records as well as threats and conservation measures for birds in the region. In both study areas, canopy cover was significantly higher in unlogged forest stands compared to logged forest stands. In Allpahuayo-Mishana, estimated bird species richness was highest in unlogged forest and lowest in forest regenerating 1-2 years post-logging. An estimated 24-80% of bird species in unlogged forest were absent from logged forest stands between 1 and 10 years postharvest.

Asymmetry, where one side of the dewlap differs in pattern or colour from the other, has only been reported in one species, Anolis lineatus, and then on only one of the two islands from which it occurs. Given the importance of the dewlap in intra- and interspecific signalling, we expanded on previous work by (1) investigating whether the reported asymmetry actually occurs and, if so, whether it occurs on animals from both Aruba and Curaçao; (2) examining whether populations differ in other aspects of their morphology or ecology; and (3) resolving the evolutionary relationships and the history of the two populations. We confirmed the presence of the asymmetrical dewlap on Curaçao and found that the asymmetry extends to populations on Aruba as well. Animals on Curaçao were smaller overall than populations from Aruba with relatively shorter metatarsals, radii, and tibias but relatively deeper heads, longer jaws, and wider and more numerous toepads on fore and hind feet.

We compared species lists from nine sites in the Madre de Dios region, five of which are in nationally recognized protected areas and four are outside the country’s protected area system. Los Amigos, occurring outside the protected area system, is the most species-rich locality included in our comparison.

This study summarizes the faunistic and natural history information for 38 amphibians and 17 species of reptiles recorded in and in the vicinity of the northern part of the Regional Conservation Area Imiría (Region Ucayali, Peru). Considerable extensions in ranges of Pristimantis delius Duellman et Mendelson, 1995 (Craugastoridae) and Osteocephalus yasuni Ron et Pramuk, 1999 (Hylidae) are documented. Current knowledge of the local herpetofauna is discussed and the importance of the conservation area for the protection of the regional flora and fauna is highlighted. Key words. Biogeography, species diversity, habitat conservation, Amphibia, Reptilia, Amazonia. INTRODUCTION The Regional Conservation Area Imiría (Área de Conservación Regional Imiría) managed by the Regional government of Ucayali, is located on the right bank of the Ucayali River within the watersheds of the rivers Tamaya and Inamapuya (District Masisea, Province Coronel Portillo, Region Ucayali, Peru). This conservation area was founded in June 2010 in order to protect the ecosystem of humid and seasonally flooded lowland forests, local natural resources and the esthe- tical value of the landscape.

E-mail: [email protected] Submitted on 2015, 17th July; revised on 2015, 11thNovember; accepted on 2015, 16th November Editor: Adriana Bellati Abstract. The Pristimantis lacrimosus species group, with 24 species distributed in the Neotropics, is a group of arbo- real frogs commonly inhabiting bromeliads. Previous studies have claimed the group to be monophyletic but few spe- cies have been included in phylogenetic analyses. In this paper, we included five additional species from the northern Andes in Colombia and tested the monophyly of this phenetic group using genetic data under a Bayesian approach. Our results show that the P. lacrimosus group represents two distant and unrelated clades. Clade “A” is endemic to Colombia while Clade “B” encompasses species distributed in Central America, Ecuador and Peru. For the first time, we reveal the phylogenetic position of P. boulengeri and a new species is described. The new taxon is most closely related to P. brevifrons from southwestern Colombia with a genetic distance of 4.3% for 16S and 10.6% for COI. Our results suggest, one more time, that morphological similarity among species in the most diverse vertebrate genus not necessarily agree with its evolutionary history and that more effort in alpha taxonomy needs to be done in order to understand the tremendous radiation of this lineage in the Neotropics.

ABSTRACT: Nests of cotingas are almost always inconspicuous and very difficult to find, this being especially true for forest species, which remains higher in the canopy. The nests of some Cotingidae species that occurs in Brazil have never been found, or little data on breeding has been recorded. The first two nests of Pompadour Cotinga, Xipholena punicea encountered in Brazil are hereby described, found in the northern Manaus, Amazonas, in September 2013 and July 2014. Nests were discovered close to each other, perhaps involving the same female. It was possible to collect some data related to the first nest, such as female feeding her nestling and collecting its feces to discard. Regarding the second nest, the female was only observed carrying materials to construct it. KEY-WORDS: Amazon, breeding, Cotingidae, nestling. The genus Xipholena (Cotingidae) contains three species of On 03 September 2013, a female X. punicea was which the male is spectacularly colored in different purple observed at a nest (Figure 1A) in the canopy, approximately tones, while the female is much paler and duller.
