There were no big-name designers with models to show o ff their creations. There was no Project Runway . There were no department stores or clothing empori - ums where one could browse for and purchase garments of the latest fashion. How did a woman achieve a stylish appearance? Just as we have Vogue , Elle and In Style magazines to keep us up to date on the most current styles, women of the Regency era had The Ladies Magazine , La Belle Assemblée , Le Beau Monde , The Gallery of Fashion , and a host of other publications (Decker) . -

Dining Out for Life began in Philadelphia in 1991 and has since grown into an international event held in cities across North America, raising an average $4 million annually. Each restaurant donates a percentage of the day's food sales, which goes to local organizations to fund care, prevention, education, testing, counseling and other essential HIV/AIDs services. In Chicago, EdgeAlliance's Dining Out for Life campaign celebrates 21 years of helping men, women and children impacted by HIV/AIDS by partnering with local restaurants. Participating restaurants around Chicago will donate a portion of their proceeds to EdgeAlliance, allowing its residents to sustain healthy lives through affordable housing and programming. In 2013, more than 8,000 diners and over 80 Chicago restaurants raised $115,000. This year, there are over 55 restaurants participating locally. "I've always been a big fan of the event, and before opening a restaurant, I've been a patron of the night," Taverna 750 owner Paul Cannella told ChicagoPride.com. "I'm a big fan of any fundraising activities that involve eating, drinking, spending time with friends, all while raising money for a great cause. -

Dawisha: The Fashion Industry as a Slippery Discursive Site: Tracing the Lines of Flight Between Problem and Intervention (Under the direction of Dr. Patricia Parker) At the intersection of the glamorous façade of designer runway shows, such as those in Paris, Milan and New York, and the cheap prices at the local Walmart and Target, is the complicated, somewhat insidious “business” of the fashion industry. It is complicated because it both exploits and empowers, sometimes through the very same practices; it is insidious because its most exploitative practices are often hidden, reproduced, and sustained through a consumer culture in which we are all in some ways complicit. Since fashion’s inception, people and institutions have employed a myriad of discursive strategies to ignore and even justify their complicity in exploitative labor, environmental degradation, and neo-colonial practices. This dissertation identifies and analyzes five predicaments of fashion while locating the multiple interventions that engage various discursive spaces in the fashion industry. Ultimately, the analysis of discursive strategies by creatives, workers, organizers, and bloggers reveals the existence of agile interventions that are as nuanced as the problem, and that can engage with disciplinary power in all these complicated places. -

One in five Americans infected with HIV don’t know it. Philadelphians can make a difference in the fight against HIV and AIDS by participating in AIDS Walk Philly, which will bring together nearly 15,000 people to raise money for HIV prevention education, public awareness, and HIV care services here in the Greater Philadelphia region. Walk and run beginning at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Run along the certified 5K route on Martin Luther King Drive at 8am. Walk along the 12K route, beginning along Kelly Drive at 9am and returning on Martin Luther King Drive. Right in our own backyard, thirty thousand of our friends, family, and neighbors live with HIV, a condition for which they are often judged and misunderstood. In 15 years, the rate of infection has not decreased. The 25 th Annual AIDS Walk Philly will also be a time to reflect over the past 25 years of the fundraising event as well as 30 years that the epidemic has existed. Robb Reichard, Executive Director of AIDS Fund , explains that part of the mission of the Walk is to give Philadelphians a better understanding of current HIV/AIDS facts. -

If I have any talent for teaching it undoubtedly comes from seeing her as a passionate elementary school teacher growing up. I am very thankful that my 92-year-old grandma still gets to see her youngest grandchild graduate and finally get a “real job.” I know it’s taking a big worry off of her. There are already several medical doctors in the family, now you can add a Doctor of Philosophy to the list. I promise I will come home to visit again soon. Thanks also to my sister, Kim who has been there through the ups and downs, and made sure I stayed on track when things were falling apart. To my dad, thank you for encouraging me to follow my dreams even if I chased them some 3,000 miles across the ocean. By Dorothy Crouch Associate Editor In 2018, two female researchers studied women in tech- nology and asked this question: Do technology companies alienate women in recruiting sessions? The answer was yes. After observing 84 recruitment ses- sions by technology companies on a university campus in the United States, researchers Shelley Correll, head of Stanford University’s Clayman Institute for Gender Research, and Alison Wynn, a postdoctoral researcher, found that fe- male candidates pursuing quantitative degrees in technology fields were often subjected to gender-imbalanced interviews, which left qualified women feeling discouraged. Together they published “Puncturing the Pipeline: Do Technology Companies Alienate Women in Recruiting Ses- sions?” ➥ Technology page 3 Max Azria, Founder of the BCBGMaxAzria Group, Passes Away in Houston By Deborah Belgum Executive Editor Max Azria, whose imprint on the Los Angeles fashion world is legendary, passed away on May 6 at The Univer- sity of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He was 70. Sources close to Azria said he died of lung cancer. Azria, who was the youngest of six children and was born in Sfax, Tunisia, on Jan. 1, 1949, grew up in France and later came to the United States in 1981 after designing women’s apparel in Paris for 11 years. His first fashion venture in Los Angeles was Jess, a chain of new-concept boutiques offering hip French fashion to American women. -

B 1 Letter from the Chairwoman, Diane von Furstenberg, and the President and Chief Executive Officer, Steven Kolb In fashion, we respond to the world we live in, a point that was powerfully driven home in 2017. We were excited to see talents with broad cultural backgrounds and political ideas begin to express their experiences and beliefs through their collections. Diversity moved into the spotlight in ways we have never seen before. Designers embraced new approaches to business, from varying show formats to disruptive delivery cycles. It was also the year to make your voices heard, and CFDA listened. We engaged in civic initiatives important to our industry and partnered with Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and FWD.us. We also relaunched our CFDA Health Initiative with guidelines to help those impacted by sexual assault or other forms of abuse. There’s no going back. In 2018, CFDA is moving ahead at full speed with an increased focus on inclusivity and women in fashion, the latter through an exciting new study with Glamour magazine. We may be a reflection of the world we live in, but we also work hard to make that world a better place.
