Dining Out for Life began in Philadelphia in 1991 and has since grown into an international event held in cities across North America, raising an average $4 million annually. Each restaurant donates a percentage of the day's food sales, which goes to local organizations to fund care, prevention, education, testing, counseling and other essential HIV/AIDs services. In Chicago, EdgeAlliance's Dining Out for Life campaign celebrates 21 years of helping men, women and children impacted by HIV/AIDS by partnering with local restaurants. Participating restaurants around Chicago will donate a portion of their proceeds to EdgeAlliance, allowing its residents to sustain healthy lives through affordable housing and programming. In 2013, more than 8,000 diners and over 80 Chicago restaurants raised $115,000. This year, there are over 55 restaurants participating locally. "I've always been a big fan of the event, and before opening a restaurant, I've been a patron of the night," Taverna 750 owner Paul Cannella told ChicagoPride.com. "I'm a big fan of any fundraising activities that involve eating, drinking, spending time with friends, all while raising money for a great cause. It's a win all around." Chicago is one of 60 cities across the United States and Canada participating in the event, making Dining Out for Life the single largest HIV/AIDS benefit in the country. Other cities participating on in Dining Out for Life include Albany, Asheville, Baton Rouge, Birmingham/Mobile, Charleston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Clearwater (Tampa Bay), Columbia, Denver-Boulder, El Paso, Ferndale (Detroit), Fort Collins, Colo., Ft. Lauderdale, Grand Junction, Colo., Grand Rapids, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Kalamazoo, Kamloops (Canada), Lake Charles, Memphis, Minneapolis, New Haven, Norfolk, Palm Springs, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Ore., Providence, Raleigh, Reno, San Diego, San Jose, Seattle, St. Louis, Tacoma, Tulsa, Washington, DC and Victoria, BC. The event is held at several other locations on alternate dates. The 25 th Annual AIDS Walk Philly will also be a time to reflect over the past 25 years of the fundraising event as well as 30 years that the epidemic has existed.     Mondo Guerra Bio Fashion designer Mondo Guerra won the hearts of judges, fellow contestants and viewers following the emotional disclosure of his HIV-positive status on Lifetime’s hit reality TV competition, Project Runway season 8. Mondo returned to the runway in 2012 on the debut season of Project Runway All Stars, where he emerged as the series’ first champion. And earlier this year, Mondo joined fashion guru and Emmy Award winner Tim Gunn as a mentor on the new show Project Runway: Under the Gunn. Mondo has been HIV-positive for over ten years and his courageous revelation on Project Runway has launched him into HIV awareness advocacy. He is currently collaborating with Merck on I Design, a national HIV education campaign aimed at helping to empower people with the disease to play an active role in designing their treatment plan with their doctors. Through I Design, Mondo shares his experience living with HIV and discusses the importance of people living with HIV to have an open and honest dialogue with their doctors to address important topics such as how they are feeling on their current therapies, other conditions they may have and other medications they are taking beyond their HIV therapy.     Welcome Dear Friends and Colleagues: Thank you for joining us for the 2013 United States Conference on AIDS (USCA). We are so excited to be returning to New Orleans this year, a city with which the National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC) has extremely strong ties, forged in part during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. For more than 16 years, USCA has worked to increase the strength and diversity of the community-based response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic through innovative educational and training sessions, new partnerships, collaboration and networking. As the only comprehensive national HIV/AIDS conference taking place this year, USCA 2013 is an especially critical opportunity for case managers, clinicians, public health workers, advocates and people living with HIV or AIDS to get the information they need to manage the transitions that will accompany Affordable Care Act (ACA) implementation welcome and enrollment. As we’re in New Orleans, the target population for this year’s conference is the Deep South. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), seven of the ten states with the highest rates of AIDS diagnosis, eight of the ten with the highest rates of HIV infection, and six of the ten with the highest rates of individuals living with HIV are in America’s southern region. Overall, the region accounted for 46 percent of all new HIV infections in 2010. Given the profile of the epidemic in the South, and the region’s resistance to ACA implementation, it is especially critical that we highlight the unique challenges facing those working to combat HIV/AIDS here.
