ABSTRACT The present study develops our understanding of the transformations at the Russian University happened since the fall of the Soviet Union. I chose to describe these transformations with the label “marketization”. The main research question is: What does marketization mean in the context of the Russian University? This study aims to contribute to developing further the marketization concept by offering a theoretical framework for analysis of the phenomenon of University marketization. Based on this framework, the study investigates the phenomenon of the Russian University marketization documenting its origins, nature, features and outcomes. The study emphasizes importance of prior understanding of the unit of analysis, the Russian University, in order to achieve understanding of the studied phenomenon. Thus, the study also provides the institutional analysis of the Russian University which contributes to clarifying the idea of the Russian University for both local and international communities. The study reveals that, for the Russian University, marketization appeared to be a critical juncture in its institutional development. This critical juncture was accompanied by abrupt, severe and extraordinary dramatic change that appeared in the form of change in the institutional dimensions of the University and a growing University engagement in marketing activities. Marketization of the Russian University was inseparable from an overall marketization of society. It originated as a desperate move, as a need for survival, as a needed initiative from the University itself. Thus, negative social consequences are more obvious than in the cases with planned marketization. It is unlikely that the Russian University is customer-oriented and focused on satisfying needs of each particular customer. However, this might be because the Russian University still perceives marketing as alien to its institutional nature. v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to offer my special acknowledgments, deep respect and thankfulness to the following very special people who supported me enormously during the four years of my PhD studies: Galina and Konstantin Maximovy, Kerstin Sahlin, Anne H. Bypassing more direct modes of political discourse blocked by Imperial and then Soviet censorship, arts reception in Russia has provided educated Russians with an alternative sphere for the negotiation of social, moral, and national identities. This discursive practice has endured through the turbulent political changes of the Russian revolution, Soviet repression, and the economic anxiety of contemporary Russia. Members of the intelligentsia who believe that individuals can and should work for the moral progress of the Russian people by participating in this conversation are constructing the Russian moral project. Near the end of the nineteenth century, members of the intelligentsia unofficially established a core set of texts and music—Russian klassika—that seemed to represent the best of Russian creative output. Although the canon seems permanent, educated Russians continue to argue about which texts are important and what they mean. Even Aleksandr Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin (1825-1833), a novel-in-verse that functions as the cornerstone of this canon, remains at the center of debate in a conversation about literature that is simultaneously a conversation about Russian life.

    JUNE 2020. 30 NEW ACQUISITIONS: Fight Against Fascism, Health Education, Literature, Art F O R E W O R D Dear friends, Our last catalogue was presented at the New York Antiquarian Book Fair in early March. The world seems to be a different place now. While all of our book shops remained closed during the lockdown, we continued to work hard and were focusing on the things that made the most sense during these difficult times - the books. When preparing this catalogue, we have found out that the books and their subjects sometimes begin to reflect what is happening in the world right now, in a way reminding us what is truly important. We were planning to open the catalogue with the collection of items printed during the WWII in Russia and dedicate it to the 75th anniversary of the victory over fascism, and sadly some of the books are still relevant now, including the item #1 in the catalogue - Clara Zetkin’s warning against fascism from 1921. The second section of the catalogue is dedicated to the health education of the masses in Soviet Union of the 1920s, the time when the foundations of the strong Soviet medical system were laid. Item #6 includes the info and photographs of how to treat patients at home, the edition also offers photographic explanation on how to disinfect which seems relevant today. In the same group of books several early Soviet scientific texts are presented, including the research of Ivan Pavlov on hysteria (#9). After cataloging all of the above it was nice to return to our usual interests such as art, cinema, theatre, literature, travel, etc.

The first ideas for creating a university in Russia came from Tsar Peter the Great, who discussed this with Leibniz. The great German philosopher suggested that the Tsar open universities in several cities, that is, in Moscow, St Petersburg, Astrakhan and Kiev, to include the important regions of the vast territory of Russian Empire1. One year before his death, on the 12 January 1724, Peter the Great founded the Academy of Sciences in St Petersburg, which should have included a university. But, actually, the latter did not operate properly. It was not until the mid-18th century, at the very beginning of the Enlightenment in Russia, that the first university was founded in Moscow. It was established at the initiative of, and according to the programme of, two prominent figures in Russian history – the scientist Mikhail Lomonosov and statesman Count Ivan Shuvalov, who both undoubtedly had the models of European universities in mind. Lomonosov had spent three years in Germany at Marburg University, where he studied under the guidance of the famous Christian Wolf.
