Contact: Caitlyn Baker [email protected] (805) 944-7780 (c) (805) 350-7913 (o) R&B LEGEND GLADYS KNIGHT TO PERFORM AT CHUMASH CASINO RESORT SANTA YNEZ, CA – August 12, 2019 – Gladys Knight, the “Empress of Soul” who has won seven Grammy Awards throughout the span of her iconic career, is coming to the Chumash Casino Resort’s Samala Showroom at 8 p.m. on Friday, September 6, 2019. Tickets for the show are $79, $89, $99, $109 & $119. Knight has recorded two No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 singles, 11 No. 1 R&B singles and six No. 1 R&B albums. Knight was born in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1952 at the age of 7, she won Ted Mac’s The Original Amateur Hour TV show contest. This event marked her first encounter with fame. Later that year, she formed a musical group named “the Pips” with her brother, sister and cousins. By the end of the decade, the act had begun to tour and eventually her sister and one of her cousins were replaced. By 1961, the group released a single on the tiny Atlanta Huntom label called “Every Beat of My Heart.” In 1966, Gladys Night and the Pips signed on with Motown Records with whom they scored several major hit singles, including “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Take Me in Your Arms and Love Me,” and “If I Were Your Woman.” In 1973, they left Motown for a better deal with Buddah Records. Here they achieved significant success with hits such as the Grammy Award-winning track “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination” and “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me.” The group continued to have hits until the late 1970s when they were forced to record separately due to legal issues, resulting in Knight’s first solo LP recordings – “Miss Gladys Knight” on Buddah Records in 1978 and “Gladys Knight” on Columbia Records in 1979.

BYRONISM IN LERMONTOV'S A HERO OF OUR TIME by ALAN HARWOOD CAMERON B.A., University of Calgary, 1968 M.A., University of British Columbia, 1970 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in the Department SLAVONIC STUDIES We accept this thesis as conforming to the required standard THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA April, 1974 In presenting this thesis in par ial fulfilment of the requirements for an advanced degree at the University of British Columbia, I agree that the Library shall make it freely available for reference and study. I further agree that permission for extensive copying of this thesis for scholarly purposes may be granted by the Head of my Department or by his representatives. It is understood that copying or publication of this thesis for financial gain shall not be allowed without my written permission. Department of The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Date Afr, I l0} I f7f ABSTRACT Although Mikhail Lermontov is commonly known as the "Russian Byron," up to this point no examination of the Byronic features of A Hero of Our Time, (Geroy nashego vremeni)3 has been made. This study presents the view that, while the novel is much more than a simple expression of Byronism, understanding the basic Byronic traits and Lermontov1s own modification of them is essential for a true comprehension of the novel. Each of the first five chapters is devoted to a scrutiny of the separate tales that make up A Hero of Our Time. The basic Byronic motifs of storms, poses and exotic settings are examined in each part with commentary on some Lermontovian variations on them.

  • Frank's World
Chris Rojek / Frank Sinatra Final Proof 9.7.2004 10:22pm page 7 one FRANK’S WORLD Frank Sinatra was a World War One baby, born in 1915.1 He became a popular music phenomenon during the Second World War. By his own account, audiences adopted and idol- ized him then not merely as an innovative and accomplished vocalist – his first popular sobriquet was ‘‘the Voice’’ – but also as an appealing symbolic surrogate for American troops fighting abroad. In the late 1940s his career suffered a precipitous de- cline. There were four reasons for this. First, the public perception of Sinatra as a family man devoted to his wife, Nancy, and their children, Nancy, Frank Jr and Tina, was tarnished by his high-octane affair with the film star Ava Gardner. The public face of callow charm and steadfast moral virtue that Sinatra and his publicist George Evans concocted during his elevation to celebrity was damaged by his admitted adultery. Sinatra’s reputation for possessing a violent temper – he punched the gossip columnist Lee Mortimer at Ciro’s night- club2 and took to throwing tantrums and hurling abuse at other reporters when the line of questioning took a turn he disap- proved of – became a public issue at this time. Second, servicemen were understandably resentful of Sina- tra’s celebrity status. They regarded it as having been easily achieved while they fought, and their comrades died, overseas. Some members of the media stirred the pot by insinuating that Sinatra pulled strings to avoid the draft. During the war, like most entertainers, Sinatra made a virtue of his patriotism in his stage act and music/film output.
