PROFILE Salim Washington is a composer/instrumentalist. He performs on the flute, saxophone, oboe, and bass clarinet. He has also studied other instruments including mbira and hand drums. Washington is also a scholar and educator and teaches at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa. His musical background is in jazz and other African American vernacular musics, but he relishes collaborations within and between differing genres of music and has performed and recorded with progressive CONTACT musicians in various contexts.
