  • A Night in Tunisia (From Album “Legends Masterpieces)
ANALISI DELLE FORME COMPOSITIVE di alcuni notissimi brani jazz di Avv. Valentina Grande 1) Sonny Rollins - St.Thomas (Original) (from album “The Prestige Years”) 2) Dizzy Gillespie feat.

  • Gerry Mulligan Discography
GERRY MULLIGAN DISCOGRAPHY GERRY MULLIGAN RECORDINGS, CONCERTS AND WHEREABOUTS by Gérard Dugelay, France and Kenneth Hallqvist, Sweden January 2011 Gerry Mulligan DISCOGRAPHY - Recordings, Concerts and Whereabouts by Gérard Dugelay & Kenneth Hallqvist - page No. 1 PREFACE BY GERARD DUGELAY I fell in love when I was younger I was a young jazz fan, when I discovered the music of Gerry Mulligan through a birthday gift from my father. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

  • VPI HR-X Turntable & JMW12.6 Tonearm
stereophile.com http://www.stereophile.com/turntables/506vpi#5kC628WHPF3lKHV2.97 VPI HR-X turntable & JMW12.6 tonearm VPI Industries' TNT turntable and JMW Memorial tonearm have evolved through several iterations over the last two decades. Some changes have been large, such as the deletion of the three-pulley subchassis and the introduction of the SDS motor controller. Others have been invisible—a change in bearing or spindle material, for example, or the way the bearing attaches to the plinth. And, as longtime Stereophile readers know, I've been upgrading and evolving along with VPI, most recently reporting on the TNT V-HR turntable (Stereophile, December 2001). But about the time I was expecting the next iteration, designer Harry Weisfeld threw me a curve by unveiling a completely new turntable design, the HR-X. First shown in prototype form at Stereophile's Home Entertainment 2002 show in New York City, the HR-X is a stunning, milled-from-aluminum showcase of everything Weisfeld has learned from designing turntables for the past 25 years. Nuts & bolts Although the HR-X is a clean-slate design, it was obviously informed by the TNT. There are four corner towers with internal pneumatic bladders, a huge platter belt-driven by an outboard motor and flywheel, and a JMW tonearm mounted directly to a massive plinth. Beyond that basic configuration, however, everything is different— rethought, improved, optimized, and executed to the highest standard possible. It's immediately obvious that even VPI's workmanship and cosmetics have been raised to new levels: the TNT was well-built and solid; the HR-X is striking and sumptuous.

  • Lee Morgan and the Philadelphia Jazz Scene of the 1950S
A Musical Education: Lee Morgan and the Philadelphia Jazz Scene of the 1950s Byjeffery S. McMillan The guys were just looking at him. They couldn't believe what was coming out of that horn! You know, ideas like . where would you get them? Michael LaVoe (1999) When Michael LaVoe observed Lee Morgan, a fellow freshman at Philadelphia's Mastbaum Vocational Technical High School, playing trumpet with members of the school's dance band in the first days of school in September 1953, he could not believe his ears. Morgan, who had just turned fifteen years old the previous July, had remarkable facility on his instrument and displayed a sophisticated understanding of music for someone so young. Other members of the ensemble, some of whom al- ready had three years of musical training and performing experience in the school's vocational music program, experienced similar feelings of dis- belief when they heard the newcomer's precocious ability. Lee Morgan had successfully auditioned into Mastbaum's music program, the strongest of its kind in Philadelphia from the 1930s through the 1960s, and demon- strated a rare ability that begged the title "prodigy." Almost exactly three years later, in November of 1956, Lee Morgan, now a member of die Dizzy Gillespie orchestra, elicited a similar response at the professional level after the band's New York opening at Birdland. Word spread, and as the Gillespie band embarked on its national tour, au- diences and critics nationwide took notice of the young soloist featured on what was often the leader's showcase number: "A Night in Tunisia." Nat Hentoff caught the band on their return to New York from the Midwest in 1957.

1 The ALTOSAX and SOPRANOSAX of JOHN CORNELIUS HODGES “JOHNNY” “RABBIT” Solographers: Jan Evensmo & Ulf Renberg Last update: Aug. 1, 2014, June 5, 2021 2 Born: Cambridge, Massachusetts, July 25, 1906 Died: NYC. May 11, 1970 Introduction: When I joined the Oslo Jazz Circle back in 1950s, there were in fact only three altosaxophonists who really mattered: Benny Carter, Johnny Hodges and Charlie Parker (in alphabetical order). JH’s playing with Duke Ellington, as well as numerous swing recording sessions made an unforgettable impression on me and my friends. It is time to go through his works and organize a solography! Early history: Played drums and piano, then sax at the age of 14; through his sister, he got to know Sidney Bechet, who gave him lessons. He followed Bechet in Willie ‘The Lion’ Smith’s quartet at the Rhythm Club (ca. 1924), then played with Bechet at the Club Basha (1925). Continued to live in Boston during the mid -1920s, travelling to New York for week-end ‘gigs’. Played with Bobby Sawyer (ca. 1925) and Lloyd Scott (ca. 1926), then from late 1926 worked regularly with Chick webb at Paddock Club, Savoy Ballroom, etc. Briefly with Luckey Roberts’ orchestra, then joined Duke Ellington in May 1928. With Duke until March 1951 when formed own small band (ref. John Chilton). Message: No jazz topic has been studied by more people and more systematically than Duke Ellington. So much has been written, culminating with Luciano Massagli & Giovanni M. Volonte: “The New Desor – An updated edition of Duke Ellington’s Story on Records 1924 – 1974”.
