SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY

In 1911, a Methodist education commission made a commitment to establish a major Methodist university in Texas. More than 600 acres of open prairie and $300,000 pledged by a group of Dallas citizens secured the university for Dallas, and it was chartered as Southern Methodist University. In appreciation of the city’s support, the first building to be constructed on the campus was named Dallas Hall. It remains the centerpiece and symbol of SMU. When the University opened in 1915, it consisted of two buildings, 706 students, a 35-member faculty, and total assets of $636,540. The original schools of SMU were the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Theology, and the School of Music.

SMU is owned by the South Central Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. The first charge of its founders, however, was that it become a great university, not necessarily a great Methodist university. From its founding, SMU has been nonsectarian in its teaching and committed to the values of academic freedom and open inquiry.

Today, Southern Methodist University offers a comprehensive curriculum through Dedman College – the college of humanities and sciences – and six schools: Meadows School of the Arts, Edwin L. Cox School of Business, School of Engineering, Perkins School of Theology, Dedman School of Law, and Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development.

4 The University offers over 110 undergraduate majors, Master’s degrees in over 100 areas, professional degrees in two disciplines, Ph.D. degrees in 25 fields, and 32 certificate programs.

Enrollment for the 2007-2008 academic year was 13,716, including 7,779 undergraduate students and 5,937 graduate and professional school students. SMU students come from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 84 countries. About 45 percent of first-year students received some form of financial assistance for 2007-2008. About 22 percent of the student body are minorities; 63 percent of undergraduates and 54 percent of graduate students report religious affiliation; 12 percent are Methodist, 13 are Roman Catholic. Also represented in the student body are other Protestant denominations and other religions, including Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam.

In addition to preparing students for graduate and professional schools, or more directly for their life’s work, the University strives to enhance their social, moral, intellectual, and religious development so that they may lead worthy lives as individuals and citizens of the nation and of the world.

The academic procession and the regalia worn by the faculty and officers of the University symbolically represent the continuing link between the modern American university and the founding of the great medieval universities in Europe – chief among them Bologna, Paris, and Oxford. As those institutions were derived from the Catholic Church, the universities adopted many of the ceremonial trappings of the church in their official public functions.

Within the great varieties of styles and colors in gowns and caps, there has been one universally accepted code for the hood worn trailing down the wearer’s back. The lining of the hood – that portion most visible from the rear – indicates the institution awarding the degree. SMU’s hood lining, for example, is blue with red chevron.

The University’s ceremonial banners were designed by Robert B. Chambers, Associate Professor Emeritus of Theatre, Meadows School of the Arts, and fabricated by Mamie Chambers. The banners bear heraldic designs with the color of trim identifying each school and group ushered this morning.

Through these colorful ceremonies, SMU symbolically displays the continuity of its educational purposes with the origins of organized learning in the Western world.

7 MEADOWS WIND ENSEMBLE

JACK DELANEY, CONDUCTOR

The Meadows Wind Ensemble is a concert band of flexible proportions composed of the University’s finest winds, brass, and percussion. The Wind Ensemble performs a broad and diverse range of literature and regularly augments its instrumentation to include strings in order to access the repertory of the modern chamber orchestra. Frequent collaborations with the Meadows Dance Ensemble/Company have further broadened the artistic range of the Ensemble.

The Meadows Wind Ensemble has performed at significant music festivals and conferences throughout the United States and Europe, and has won the acclaim of the world’s leading contemporary composers for dynamic performances of their works, many of which were written on commission for the Ensemble. This season, the Meadows Wind Ensemble is celebrating an invitation from the China Performing Arts Organization of the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China, to participate in a ten-day concert tour of the People’s Republic of China, with performances to be scheduled in the country’s premier concert venues. Performances and recordings of the Meadows Wind Ensemble have been broadcast by the BBC in London, NPR in the United States, and numerous national radio networks around the world. Jack Delaney is Professor of Music and Conductor of the Meadows Wind Ensemble at the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU. He has conducted student and professional ensembles throughout Europe, South America, Israel, and the United States. His numerous honors include the Algur H. Meadows Distinguished Teaching Professorship at the Meadows School of the Arts.

ANNEMARIE WEYL CARR Annemarie Weyl Carr, University Distinguished Professor of Art History in Meadows School of the Arts, received a B.A. from Swarthmore College and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. She joined the SMU faculty in 1972 and has served as chair of the Division of Art History in addition to her teaching. An internationally renowned scholar of Byzantine art with particular interest in the cross-cultural complexities of Cyprus, she has published three books and numerous journal articles. She has served on the editorial board of Art Bulletin, as president of the International Center of Medieval Art and as editor of its journal, Gesta. Professor Carr has held visiting professorships at the University of Chicago, University of Delaware and University of Pittsburgh. She has received fellowships at the National Humanities Center and Dumbarton Oaks Center for Byzantine Studies. A dedicated teacher, she has received numerous honors, including the United Methodist University Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award, Meadows Foundation Distinguished Teaching Fellowship and Phi Beta Kappa Perrine Prize for Teaching and Research. She was nationally recognized in 2006 with the Distinguished Teaching of Art History Award of the College Art Association. She retires as Professor Emerita of Art History.

STEVEN V. DANIELS Steven V. Daniels, Associate Professor of English in Dedman College, earned his B.A. degree from Brooklyn College and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He joined the SMU faculty in 1969. Professor Daniels’ major intellectual interests are in the fields of Victorian literature and culture, and psychoanalysis, which he applied in examining complex prose and verse in his classes. In the Department of English, he taught everything from first-year writing to graduate seminars, but his primary love was Victorian literature. Besides his passion for teaching, Professor Daniels served in every major position in the Department of English – as vice chair, director of graduate and undergraduate studies, chair of several search committees and, at a crucial point in its history, as chair of the Department. His other University activities included service on a provost search committee, Phi Beta Kappa committees, Women’s Studies Council and numerous committees of the Faculty Senate. He also served as president of the SMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors and as chair of its Texas Conference Committee on the Status of Non-Tenured Faculty. He retires as Professor Emeritus of English.

DAVID HAUSMAN David Hausman, Professor of Philosophy in Dedman College, received both B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Iowa. He came to SMU in 1969. His academic specialties are the history of early modern philosophy and history of early 20th-century philosophical analysis. His publications include more than 20 articles and a book on Descartes and his philosophical legacy. During his tenure as chair of the Department of Philosophy from 1977-1993, the Department grew in scholarly distinction and advanced toward its current reputation as one of the nation’s top undergraduate philosophy departments. Professor Hausman also was deeply committed to SMU’s General Education curriculum, both as a teacher and an administrator. In addition to team-teaching in the Core Courses, he served as faculty chair of General Education from 1993-95 and as dean for General Education in 1995-96. He chaired the Hausman Commission on General Education, which played an important role in the restructuring of that curriculum. His other administrative service included the position of Dedman College associate dean for Academic Affairs in 1996-97. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Philosophy.

13 PAUL GORDON HOOK Paul Gordon Hook, Associate Professor of Wellness in the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development, received a B.A. degree from Westmont College, Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, M.A. in physical education from SMU and Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of North Texas. He joined the SMU faculty in 1960 as a physical education instructor and director of men’s intramurals. Professor Hook has served the University in a wide variety of teaching, leadership and service roles during his 48 years on campus. These positions include director of the Recreation Area in the Umphrey Lee Center, photographer for SMU Athletics, counselor in the Hilltop Sports Camp and director of the summer tennis program for children. He also served as athletic director for the Mustang Music Camp and as a member of the Faculty Senate. He taught “Nature of Man” courses in the General Education Curriculum and, from 1960-1990, taught physical education theory and individual sport courses for students majoring in physical education. Most recently, he has devoted himself to the SMU Wellness Program. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Wellness.

JOHN J. MYLAN John J. Mylan, Professor of Law in Dedman School of Law, received his B.S. degree from Fordham University, his J.D. from Stanford Law School and his LL.M. from New York University. He practiced law in Southern California before beginning his academic career at Willamette University College of Law, where he established a strong reputation as a tax scholar. He joined the faculty of Dedman School of Law in 1982 and also has served as a visiting professor for Graduate Tax Programs at the University of Florida and New York University. He has lectured extensively around the country and abroad at tax institutes, symposia and conferences. Professor Mylan is known for his ability to communicate complex tax concepts to his students clearly and effectively in his basic and advanced tax courses. A prolific scholar, he published two major tax treatises and numerous articles on recent developments in federal and corporate income tax and taxation of banks. Beyond his teaching, he served as chair of SMU’s Annual Federal Tax Planning Symposium and chair of the Graduate Legal Studies Committee, as well as serving on various committees of Dedman School of Law. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Law.

BRYAN ROBBINS Bryan Robbins, Associate Professor of Wellness in the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development, received his B.A. degree from SMU and his M.Ed. from the University of Arkansas. He began his years at SMU as a student athlete on the swimming and diving team, earning three-time All American status. A coach and teacher at SMU since 1969, he also was chosen as a coach for the Pan American Games, World Aquatic Games and U.S. Olympic Team Diving. In addition to his prowess in water sports, he is an expert in the martial arts. At SMU in 1972, Professor Robbins started the first martial arts class for credit in the United States. He holds a prestigious master instructor certificate and a seventh degree black belt in karate, a third degree black belt in aikido and a teaching certificate in aiki ju jutsu. He has authored numerous popular books on the martial arts and yoga disciplines and has taught thousands of SMU students, faculty and staff the benefits of these mind-body techniques. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Wellness.

14 JOHN W. SLOCUM JR. John W. Slocum Jr., the O. Paul Corley Distinguished Professor of Management and Organizations in Cox School of Business, received his B.B.A. from Westminster College, M.B.A. from Kent State University and Ph.D. from the University of Washington. After beginning his academic career at Pennsylvania State University, he joined SMU’s Cox School in 1979. In addition to his teaching, he has served in numerous administrative roles, including multiple terms as a department chair and one year as dean ad interim. Professor Slocum is currently editor of the Journal of World Business, Organizational Dynamics and the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies. He has served as president of the national Academy of Management and as editor of its flagship research publication, the Academy of Management Journal. He has published 28 books, more than 130 articles and two leading management and organizational behavior textbooks. Professor Slocum’s outstanding teaching at SMU has been recognized with the Nicolas Salgo Distinguished Teacher Award, Rotunda Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award, Outstanding B.B.A. Teaching Award and Most Valuable Professor Award for the Executive M.B.A. Program. He also received the inaugural Carl Sewell Distinguished Service Award and the Distinguished University Citizen Award. He retires as the O. Paul Corley Distinguished Chair and Professor Emeritus of Management and Organizations.

EDWIN E. SYLVEST JR. Edwin E. Sylvest Jr., Associate Professor of History of Christianity in Perkins School of Theology, has been a member of the SMU community for half a century. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University, he earned his divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology, followed by a Ph.D. as one of the first students in SMU’s Graduate Program in Religious Studies. He joined the Perkins faculty in 1970. Professor Sylvest’s pioneering research on Spanish-language religious practices produced books titled Franciscan Mission Theory in Sixteenth Century New Spain and To Love the Sojourner: A United Methodist Response to the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. He also engaged in special study of the role of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and received a fellowship from the Association of Theological Schools for research into Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. He has been a visiting professor in Puerto Rico and Mexico, among other settings. In addition to his teaching at Perkins, he has served as director of extension learning with responsibil- ity for the Perkins Houston-Galveston Program. An ordained Methodist minister, he is a member of the Rio Grande Conference. He retires as Professor Emeritus of History of Christianity.

VIGDOR TEPLITZ Vigdor Teplitz, Professor of Theoretical Physics in Dedman College, received his S.B. degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. He held positions at the University of California-Berkeley and CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland. He taught at MIT and Virginia Polytechnic Institute before coming to SMU in 1990, where he served as Physics Department chair until 1995. Professor Teplitz has devoted most of his life to science and national security. His early work contributed toward development of the standard model of particle physics. Later, he was active in arms control negotiations and participated in preparations for the SALT I Treaty. He also worked on negotiations with the Soviets on satellite weapons, nuclear force missiles and strategic arms. He became interested in cosmology and initiated searches for remnants of objects created during formation of the Universe. In recent years, Professor Teplitz has served as a U.S. representative to the NATO Science Committee and chief of university programs for the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. He continues to advise the U.S. State Department on national security issues as a consultant to the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Physics.

PAULA S. APSELL, Doctor of Humane Letters Paula S. Apsell—television producer and public educator—has brought the world of science to a national audience. She began her career at station WGBH in Boston, after earning a B.A. degree from Brandeis University. In 1975 she joined NOVA, then a fledgling WGBH-produced national series that would set the standard for science programming on television. She left NOVA for a few years to serve as a medical programming producer for ABC and a Vannevar Bush Fellow in the Public Understanding of Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Ms. Apsell returned to NOVA in 1984 as executive producer, guiding the program to become the most popular science series on television and the Web. She also has overseen production of many award-winning WGBH Science Unit specials. Under her direction, NOVA has won every major broadcast honor, including multiple Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, AAAS Westinghouse Science Journalism Award and Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Gold Baton. NOVA was the first recipient of the National Science Foundation’s Public Service Award. Ms. Apsell also has been honored with numerous individual awards. For her central role in enhancing public understanding of science through innovative television programming, Southern Methodist University is honored to confer upon Paula S. Apsell the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

WALLACE SMITH BROECKER, Doctor of Science Wallace S. Broecker—geologist and geochemist—is one of the world’s leading interpreters of the Earth’s climate system. After receiving B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University, he joined the faculty of Columbia, where he has been the Newberry Professor of Geological Sciences since 1977. Dr. Broecker pioneered new approaches to studying the Earth’s climate, including the use of radiocarbon and other chemical isotopes from marine sediments. His investigation of oceanic cycles and the relationship of the oceans and the atmosphere has advanced our understanding of climate change. He has played an active role in environmental policy debate as a leading voice warning of the potential danger of increased greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere. The author of several textbooks and more than 400 scientific articles, Dr. Broecker is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His numerous honors include the National Medal of Science, the nation’s highest scientific award, and the Blue Planet Prize for achievements in global environmental research. For his outstanding contributions to our understanding of the Earth’s past climate and environmental issues related to its future, Southern Methodist University is honored to confer upon Wallace S. Broecker the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa.

16 EDITH AND PETER O’DONNELL JR., Doctors of Humane Letters Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr.—civic leaders and philanthropists—have played a pivotal role in advancing the arts and education in Dallas and beyond. Edith O’Donnell graduated from the University of Texas. Peter O’Donnell received a bachelor’s degree from the University of the South and M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is president of the O’Donnell Foundation of Dallas, which develops and funds model programs to strengthen engineering and science education and research. He created the Advanced Placement Incentive Program, which has dramatically increased the rate of minority high school students passing college-level exams in mathematics, science and English. Peter O’Donnell was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in April 2008. He serves on the Presidents’ Circle of the National Academy of Sciences and is a founding member of the Academy of Medicine, Science and Engineering of Texas. Edith O’Donnell promotes arts education as co-founder of Young Audiences, now called Big Thought, and founder of the Advanced Placement Incentive Programs for art and music theory in Dallas area schools. She serves on boards of The Hockaday School and Dallas Museum of Art. The O’Donnells have been honored with the James K. Wilson Award for service to the arts in Dallas and the Linz Award, Dallas’ most prestigious civic honor. For their generous and farsighted contributions to the arts, sciences and education in Dallas, Texas and the nation, Southern Methodist University is honored to confer upon Edith O’Donnell and Peter O’Donnell Jr. the degrees of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

She earned an undergraduate degree from Spelman College, followed by two Masters’ degrees and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Perkins School of Theology at SMU. A trailblazer and champion of women’s advancement, she holds the distinction of being the first African American woman to be ordained in the North Texas region of The United Methodist Church. This extraordinary accomplishment earned her a place of honor in the National Women’s Museum. A breast cancer survivor, Dr. Patterson has created a print, radio, and television education campaign to help others face their health issues. In 2007 she joined forces with Methodist Health Care System to reach an even broader audience. Through an interactive Web site, her Patterson Pledge offers online encouragement via podcasts and commentaries. Dr. Patterson is a highly sought-after speaker across the nation. A veteran journalist, she has more than 20 years of on-air radio and television experience, including a syndicated ABC radio broadcast and frequent appearances on Good Morning Texas on WFAA-TV. She is the author of eight books, a frequent columnist for The Dallas Morning News and has been featured on CNN and in Jet magazine.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER ALLEN WEINSTEIN

As Archivist of the United States since 2005, Dr. Allen Weinstein heads the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), an independent federal agency that preserves and makes available the permanent records of the federal government. NARA’s 38 facilities include the National Archives headquarters in Washington, D.C., and 12 presidential libraries. The 13th such facility will be the George W. Bush Presidential Library to be located at SMU. A leader on global democracy issues, Dr. Weinstein founded in 1984 The Center for Democracy, a non-profit foundation based in Washington, D.C., and served as its president until 2002. His international awards include the United Nations Peace Medal, the Council of Europe’s Silver Medal and awards from the presidents of Nicaragua and Romania for assistance in their countries’ democratization processes. In 2003 Dr. Weinstein was named Senior Advisor on Democratic Institutions at the International Foundation for Election Systems. He has led election observation delegations in countries ranging from El Salvador to Russia. Within the higher education community, the noted historian has been a faculty member at Boston University and Georgetown University and held visiting professorships at several other universities. Among numerous professional and civic activities, he has served on the Advisory Council of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas-Austin and as chair of the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library Advisory Council. The author of several books, Dr. Weinstein has served as consultant for History Channel programs and has been a frequent commentator on CNN, C-SPAN and other networks.
