TITLE: Maned Wolf - Chrysocyon brachyurus (Illiger, 1811) A Selected SSP Bibliography AUTHOR & INSTITUTION: Alan F. Rost, Information Specialist Dickerson Park Zoo Springfield, Missouri DATE: Fall 1988 This is a selected bibliography and not necessarily meant to be comprehensive. Revised editions of this bibliography will be made available at future SSP meetings (and through the L.S.I.G. Bibliography Service) as changes and additions warrant. Therefore, corrections and suggestions of additional titles that might be added to this bibliography are welcomed. There is one special requirement for inclusion in this bibliography: the bibliographer requires a complete text of the article under consideration, since he hopes to eventually index and annotate this bibliography. Foreign language articles are encouraged, as long as the full article is submitted. Acosta, Alfredo L. 1972. Hand-rearing a litter of maned wolves at Los Angeles Zoo. • EPIDEMIOLOGY of SELECTED INFECTIOUS DISEASES in ZOO-UNGULATES: SINGLE SPECIES VERSUS MIXED SPECIES EXHIBITS Carolina Probst
EPIDEMIOLOGY OF SELECTED INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN ZOO-UNGULATES: SINGLE SPECIES VERSUS MIXED SPECIES EXHIBITS Carolina Probst, DVM,* Heribert Hofer, MSc, PhD, Stephanie Speck, DVM, PhD, and Kai Frölich, DVM, PhD1 Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, Alfred-Kowalke Strasse 17, 10315 Berlin, Germany Reprinted with permission. American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, 2005. Joint Annual Conference. Abstract The study analyses the epidemiology of selected infectious diseases of 65 different species within the four families of bovids, cervids, camelids and equids in one czech and nine German zoos. It is based on a survey of all epidemiologic data since 1998. Furthermore 900 blood samples taken between 1998 and 2005 are screened for the presence of antibodies against selected viral and bacterial pathogens. The results are linked to the epidemiologic data. Introduction The concept of mixed species exhibits increasingly becomes important in European zoos. It is an important form of behavioral enrichment, it optimizes the use of space and it is of great educational value for visitors, giving them an impression of ecological connections. But until now it has not been elucidated whether the kind of exhibit may lead to an increase in the prevalence of specific infections. The aims of this study are to evaluate the exposure of zoo-ungulates to a variety of disease pathogens that can be transmitted between different species and to assess the epidemiology of mixed exhibits. We are interested in the following questions: 1. Which selected infectious agents are zoo ungulates exposed to? 2. What is the seroprevalence against these agents? 3. Is there a correlation between seroprevalence and the following factors: - animal exhibition system (single species / mixed species exhibit) - population density and animal movements - interspecific contact rates 4.

  • Primate Report 64 (2002).Pdf
Foreword Foreword The present issue of Primate Report, presenting selected mixed species exhibits in Zoos of Germany, comprises two parts: The first part represents a survey of primate mixed species exhibits in Zoos and Tierparks of Germany. It focuses on the association of primates with other pri- mate and/or mammal species under captive conditions, in order to evaluate the fea- sibility of mixing specific primate species in Zoo-exhibits, as well as the potential risks and benefits for the animals involved. Individual concepts of enclosure designs based on the requirements of the mixed species are presented along with the experi- ences made by zoo personnel, in establishing and maintaining these polyspecific as- sociations. Beside practical problems, technical demands for particular exhibits are also mentioned. In the second part of this issue, some selected mixed species exhibits without primates involved are presented. This selection is focused on polyspecific associa- tions of mammals which are rarely seen in captivity. By presenting these associa- tions, some valuable information on unusual exhibits is provided to further support the development of polyspecific associations in Zoos and to promote new ideas as al- ternative ways of optimising keeping conditions in general. The issue ends with final remarks on the overall experiences with mixed species exhibits made by zoo staff, including the public relation caused by such exhibits and the educational aspects for visitors. For further information on mixed species exhibits of mammals in Zoos world- wide, the study of Dr. Gabriele Hammer, titled "Gemeinschaftshaltung von Säuge- tieren in Zoos", also available on CD-ROM, is highly recommended (see: HAMMER, 2001).

She began her zoo work at a time when opportunities for career-oriented women were limited. Between 1930 and 1939, only 0.8 percent of graduates of American and Canadian veterinary schools were women (the figure had increased to more than 60 percent by the 1990s). At her husband's suggestion she continued to use her maiden name O'Connor as her professional name. For nearly three decades until her retirement in 1970 she wore many hats to keep the zoo going, especially during the war years. She was de facto the curator of education, as well as the curator of mammals and birds. A superb organizer, she helped found several organizations, including the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV). Dr O'Connor became the AAZV's first president from 1946 to 1957, and took up the presidency again in 1965.
