Abstract The study analyses the epidemiology of selected infectious diseases of 65 different species within the four families of bovids, cervids, camelids and equids in one czech and nine German zoos. It is based on a survey of all epidemiologic data since 1998. Furthermore 900 blood samples taken between 1998 and 2005 are screened for the presence of antibodies against selected viral and bacterial pathogens. The results are linked to the epidemiologic data. Introduction The concept of mixed species exhibits increasingly becomes important in European zoos. It is an important form of behavioral enrichment, it optimizes the use of space and it is of great educational value for visitors, giving them an impression of ecological connections. But until now it has not been elucidated whether the kind of exhibit may lead to an increase in the prevalence of specific infections. The aims of this study are to evaluate the exposure of zoo-ungulates to a variety of disease pathogens that can be transmitted between different species and to assess the epidemiology of mixed exhibits. We are interested in the following questions: 1. Which selected infectious agents are zoo ungulates exposed to? 2. What is the seroprevalence against these agents? 3. Is there a correlation between seroprevalence and the following factors: - animal exhibition system (single species / mixed species exhibit) - population density and animal movements - interspecific contact rates 4. -

Visayan hornbill The Visayan hornbill (Penelopides panini) is a hornbill found in rainforests on the islands of Panay, Negros, Masbate, and Visayan hornbill Guimaras, and formerly Ticao, in the Philippines. Considering that predator reintroductions may cause local resistance, we assessed attitudes of different key actor profiles to the return of the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) to Portugal before reintroduction started in 2015. We aimed to characterize a social context from an ethnoecological perspective, including factors such as local knowledge, perceptions, emotions, and opinions. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews (n = 131) in three different protected areas and observed practices and public meetings in order to describe reintroduction contestation, emotional involvement with the species, and local perceptions about conservation. Detailed content data analysis was undertaken and an open-ended codification of citations was performed with the support of ATLAS.ti. Besides the qualitative analyses, we further explored statistic associations between knowledge and opinions and compared different geographical areas and hunters with non-hunters among key actors. Results: Local ecological knowledge encompassed the lynx but was not shared by the whole community. Both similarities and differences between local and scientific knowledge about the lynx were found. The discrepancies with scientific findings were not necessarily a predictor of negative attitudes towards reintroduction. Contestation issues around reintroduction differ between geographical areas but did not hinder an emotional attachment to the species and its identification as a territory emblem. -

Aims and Objectives: Being indigenous to the Philippines, the initial reports of hematological values and the common diseases of this subspecies are significant to be determined and studied. This study was conducted to provide an initial report on hematological and serum biochemical values and the detection of antibodies against C. psittaci in the blood serum of Tarictic, Rufuos, and Palawan hornbill at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature Center. Materials and Methods: Captive birds at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature Center in the Philippines were used as samples.
