Painting with pure colour has been – from Manet onwards – one of the great artistic challenges. To bring out the best in colour, Accardi switched support. No more canvases or boards, materials which inevitably absorb pigment, but a transparent plastic sheet onto which colour is applied directly from the tube. By virtue of its translucent qualities, sicofoil exalts colours and strengthens their beauty and freshness. Accardi’s intuition in this respect was as simple as it was effective, comparable to Fontana’s holes and slashes.

  • Women Pioneers in Civil Engineering and Architecture in Italy: Emma Strada and Ada Bursi
Caterina Franchini https://doi.org/10.3986/wocrea/1/momowo1.04 Women Pioneers in Civil Engineering Italian law never explicitly denied women access to university, but in the nineteenth century the presence of women at university was low. From 1867 to 1900 there were 224 women graduates and Architecture in Italy: in Italy. In the same period 49.8% of female degrees were taken in northern Italy and 26.9% of this number were from Turin.1 Emma Strada and Ada Bursi In the first decades of the twentieth century the number of women graduates did not increase much. This is also related to the fact that in 1910–11 there were 791 girls in all high schools of the Kingdom of Italy, while the number of boys was 13,551.2 In Italy, university was free and open to anyone who qualified, until 1923 when Education Minister Giovanni Gentile passed a law limiting access to university to those who had attended the following high schools: liceo classico (classical lyceum), scientifico (scientific lyceum) or artistico (artistic lyceum). In the same year, secondary schools began to segregate boys and girls.3 Girls’ secondary schools were created and soon became the only choice for women to study, preventing them from entering university which was now reserved for students coming from the above mentioned licei. Since the two major Italian engineering schools, the Politecnico di Torino (Polytechnic of Turin)4 and Politecnico di Milano (Polytechnic of Milan, 1863),5 were founded in the northern industrial area, the first civil engineers came from Turin and Milan.

The project aims to value the experience of women who have worked in the past to create a bridge between generations. As such, this is why in the project title there is a reference to the Modern Movement, a historical stage in which professional women have known their first emancipation from the point of view of work in the world of design and construction. The different actions –project management, cultural, creative, communication and support activities– have been jointly planned and targeted, not only to reach the highest possible number of participants but also to create a platform for sharing skills and knowledge for the continuation of activities beyond the time limits of the project.

  • BIBLIOGRAFIA Indice Artisti, Architetti, Designer
The Responsibilities of the Architect: Mass Production and Modernism in the Work of Marco Zanuso 1936-1972 Shantel Blakely Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 © 2011 Shantel Blakely All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Responsibilities of the Architect: Mass Production and Modernism in the Work of Marco Zanuso 1936-1972 Shantel Blakely The topic of this dissertation is the significance of industrial design in the work of architect Marco Zanuso (1916-2001), who lived and practiced in Milan, Italy. As a leading architect, as well as a pioneer in industrial design in the early postwar period, Zanuso was a key protagonist in the relationship of postwar Italian architecture culture to industrialization and capitalism. He is therefore an indicative figure with respect to the broader shift from Modernism to Postmodernism in architecture. Whereas previous studies of Zanuso have addressed either his architecture or his industrial design, this study traces the mutual influence of these practices in Zanuso's early work. The four chapters examine a selection of his projects to reconstruct their relationships to concurrent discourses in Italian art, architecture, and industry. In addition, the chapters show how these projects can be understood as conceptual and practical benchmarks along the way to the eventual realization of a continuum of design from small to large scale, and especially an architecture in which the serial nature of mass production would be explicit. The first chapter, whose topic is Zanuso's relationship to Italian modern architecture between the two World Wars, relates his embrace of mass-production around 1946, in essays on prefabricated architecture, to his student work in the 1930s and to his first projects during Reconstruction, emphasizing the influence of the Gruppo 7, Giuseppe Pagano, and Ernesto Nathan Rogers.

LARA VINCA MASINI 1977 An operation like the one Paolo Gubinelli has conducted for several years now, in which it has gained precision and character, is clearly posed as the acquisition of contemporary culture in the area of an increasingly more “reductive” exploration, on light, space and structure. I refer to the line of exploration, defined as “analytical” which, starting out from the proposals of space-light-colour in the luminous dynamics of the atmosphere, already expressed in Balla’s “iridescent permeations,” was conducted bypassing — without ignoring it — the entire European abstract-geometric moment. Retrieved after World War II, it divided into two major veins — that of Europe and that of America — perhaps on the basis of the European-American work of Albers. It gave rise, on one hand, to neo-concretism (with all its dilations and processes), arriving to the recent studies of “reflection on painting” and of “analysis on means” (from Fontana to Castellani to Dorazio, from Gaul to Griffa to Support Surface...), while on the other hand, it gave rise to what has been defined as the “cold line,” “opaque painting,” or American “analytics” which recalls Stella, Newman, Reinhardt and arrives, with constant reciprocal filtering, to Agnes Martin, Dorothea Rockburne..
