DYALL-SMITH Department of Microbiology, University of Melbourne, Parkville, Victoria 3052, Australia Received 25 May 1989/Accepted 10 November 1989 A mutant resistant to the gyrase inhibitor novobiocin was selected from a halophilic archaebacterium belonging to the genus Haloferax. Chromosomal DNA from this mutant was able to transform wild-type ceils to novobiocin resistance, and these transformants formed visible colonies in 3 to 4 days on selective plates. The resistance gene was isolated on a 6.7-kilobase DNA KpnI fragment, which was inserted into a cryptic multicopy plasmid (pHK2) derived from the same host strain. The recombinant plasmid transformed wild-type cells at a high efficiency (>106/pg), was stably maintained, and could readily be reisolated from transformants. It could also transform Halobacterium volcanii and appears to be a useful system for genetic analysis in halophilic archaebacteria. Read 17 November 1960 N the second volume of his Economic History of Modern I Britain (p. 145), Sir John Clapham, writing of the chambers of commerce and trade associations which multiplied rapidly after 1860, suggested that between 1850 and 1875 "there was rather less co-operation among 'capitalist' producers than there had been in the more difficult first and second quarters" of the nineteenth century. He mentioned that in the British salt industry there had been price-fixing associations "based on a local monopoly" in the early nineteenth century, and added that after 1825 the industry "witnessed alternations of gentle men's agreements and 'fighting trade' " until the formation of the Salt Union in 1888. This combine has been called "the first British trust", but to the salt proprietors of the time it was merely "a new device, made easier by limited liability, for handling an old problem". The interest in these microorganisms lies on the properties of their molecules, that present high salt and temperature tolerance, as well as, antioxidant power, being an excellent source of compounds for several biotechnological applications. However, the bioactive properties from haloarcahaea remain scarcely studied compared to other groups as plants or algae, usually reported as good health promoters. In this work we describe the isolation and the molecular identification of two new haloarchaeal strains from Odiel salterns (SW Spain), and the antioxidant, antimicrobial and bioactive potential of their extracts. The results revealed that the extracts obtained with acetone presented the highest activities in the antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory assays, becoming a promising source of metabolites with applied interest in pharmacy, cosmetics and food industry. -

Halite karst geohazards (natural and man-made) in the United Kingdom. Environmental Geology, Vol. 42, 505-512. This work is based on a paper presented to the 8th Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental impact of karst, Louisville, Kentucky, April 2001. In the United Kingdom Permian and Triassic halite (rock salt) deposits have been affected by natural and artificial dissolution producing karstic landforms and subsidence. Brine springs from the Triassic salt have been exploited since Roman times, or possibly earlier, indicating prolonged natural dissolution. Medieval salt extraction in England is indicated by the of place names ending in “wich” indicating brine spring exploitation at Northwich, Middlewich, Nantwich and Droitwich. Later, Victorian brine extraction in these areas accentuated salt karst development causing severe subsidence problems that remain a legacy. The salt was also mined, but the mines flooded and consequent brine extraction caused the workings to collapse, resulting in catastrophic surface subsidence. Legislation was enacted to pay for the damage and a levy is still charged for salt extraction. Some salt mines are still collapsing and the re-establishment of the post-brine extraction hydrogeological regimes means that salt springs may again flow causing further dissolution and potential collapse. -

The changing technology of post medieval sea salt production in England Jeremy Greenwood Composition of seawater Sea water contains 3.5% evaporites of which salt (sodium chloride) comprises 77.8%. The remainder is known as bittern as it includes the bitter tasting, aperient and deliquescent sulphates of magnesium (Epsom salt) and sodium (Glauber’s salt) as well as about 11% magnesium chloride. 2 Successful commercial salt making depends on the fractional crystallisation of seawater producing the maximum amount of salt without contamination by bittern salts. As seawater is evaporated, very small amounts of calcium carbonate are precipitated followed by some calcium sulphate. This is followed by the crystallisation of sodium chloride but before this is complete, bitter Epsom salt appears; something that needs to be avoided.1 In Continental Europe, evaporation of sea water is achieved solely by the energy of the wind and sun but this is not possible in the English climate so other techniques were developed. 1 http://www.solarsaltharvesters.com/notes.htm SOLAR SALT ENGINEERING 3 Evaporation vessel Briquetage The earliest known English method of coastal saltmaking has been found in the late Bronze Age. This involved boiling seawater in crude clay dishes supported by clay firebars (briquetage) and was widespread in Europe. ABSTRACT : The work presented here focuses on the inter-annual variability of annual rainfall in Northern Algeria. This work is carried out by using the coefficient of variation (the ratio between the standard deviation and the average). We will try to show areas of low, medium and high variations in Northern Algeria. In order to do this, we use 333 rainfall stations spread over the entire study area, with a measurement period of 37 years (1968/2004). The contrast of rainfall spatial and temporal distribution has been demonstrated by studying the sixteen basins, as adopted by the National Agency of Water Resources. The high spatial variability characterizes the basins of the High Plateaus of Constantine and Chot El Hodna.
