My concern in the following chapter is the conspicuous propensity in Swedish animation towards animated documentary. In my view Sweden is the country that, besides Canada and Great Britain, has developed the most prolifi c production of fi lms that merge documentary purposes and animated imagery. In this chapter I defi ne animated documentary, as I understand it. I will also take a look into the history of Swedish animation and documentary, with an emphasis on the features that might be the base for the development of the animated documentary.

  • Max Hattler Shift Pv Friday 09 March 6 - 8 Pm 09 March - 28 April
T E N D E R P I X E L . PRESS RELEASE MAX HATTLER SHIFT PV FRIDAY 09 MARCH 6 - 8 PM 09 MARCH - 28 APRIL GALLERY HOURS WED - SAT 2 - 6PM OR BY APPOINTMENT Tenderpixel is pleased to present ‘Shift’, the first solo-show in London for Max Hattler. Moving image artist Hattler is transforming the basement space of the gallery into his cinematic interpretation of an apocalyptic shift. Using the New Age idea of a ‘dimensional shift’ as inspiration, this new work approaches the viewer with both an uncanny relevance and visual trance. As we face our current transition from our comfortable four dimensional existence into a fifth dimension, the animation in ‘Shift’ combines science-fiction themes abstracted and explored through colour, movement and shape. This exhibition will premiere the work completed by Hattler through his Animate Projects commission for Channel 4’s Random Acts. Max Hattler’s abstract stop-motion animation work for ‘Shift’ is an attempt to visualise higher dimensions and un- earthliness, taking into account these concepts’ heightened awareness when attempting to process or predict the end of the world. Looping this short but intense film, he is interested in the space between abstraction and figura- tion, where storytelling is freed from the constraints of traditional narrative. Hattler’s practice contemplates micro- cosms, moments, and atmospheres: close-ups as reflections on the big picture. While his timed-based works are devoid of dialogue, they explore the relationship between sound, music and the moving image. Experimental animator and media artist Max Hattler was educated at Goldsmiths, Escuela de Cine de Madrid, and the Royal College of Art, graduating with an MA (RCA) in Animation in 2005.

  • Marie's Last Line
MIKE HOOLBOOM Mourning Pictures Weightless pans lend the viewer the eyes of a body gripped by fever, as if these re-enactments were being watched over by ghosts. Nurses pad silently in white uniforms delivering milk and meals, while the patients wait, read, play checkers, stare out windows, never far from the crisp white linen of their beds. The mood throughout is haunting and elegiac; despite the utopian curatives of a new science, it is difficult to shake the feeling that the end of the world is not far. 279 The third act begins in darkness, with the voice of Marie, committed before adolescence to the sanitorium, recalling her experience from the far shore of the present. Family life appears in colour vignettes, posing for portraits, or gathered to eat before her brother sails off for war. Over her recollections the dominant formal trope is a virtuosic superimposition, moments of found footage erupting from prairie fields or the sanitorium; these places of waiting become a stage for reflection. Like the patients themselves, this is a landscape of ghosts longing for remembrance. For mourning. Marie's Last Line This moderate feeling has become familiar to me. It is now all I allow myself to experience, even in moments of great joy. After Brenda, Donigan Cumming Beyond the Absurd, Beyond Cruelty: Donigan Cumming’s Staged Realities Sally Berger Cruelty. Without an element of cruelty at the foundation of every spectacle, the theatre is not possible. In the state of degeneracy, in which we live, it is through the skin that metaphysics will be made to re-enter our minds.
