Nur im Emeritierungsdokument des Carnegie Institutes of Tech- nology wird ein zweiter Vorname Otto M. Stern erwähnt. Vater: Mühlenbesitzer Oskar Stern (*1850–1919) und Mutter Eugenie Stern geb. Rosenthal (*1863–1907) Nach Angabe von Diana Templeton-Killan, der Enkeltochter von Berta Kamm und somit Großnichte von Otto Stern (E-Mail vom 3.12.2015 an Horst Schmidt- Böcking) war Ottos Großvater Abraham Stern. AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Emily M. Simpson for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History of Science presented on June 12, 2018. Title: Mars and Popular Astronomy, 1890-1910 Abstract approved: ______________________________________________________________________ Jacob D. Hamblin Beginning in the late-nineteenth century, several dialogues emerged concerning life on Mars. Some supported the notion of an inhabited Mars, citing recent observations of the planet, while others, pointing to a lack of concrete evidence, denied the validity of such a bold hypothesis. The dialogues within and between different groups focused on three primary topics: the existence of artificial canals on Mars, evaluation of scientific values, and methods to contact Mars from Earth. Scientists and science popularizers recognized the power of popular media to legitimate and perpetuate their interpretations of Mars and employed several tools to promote their ideas, especially when those ideas proved controversial. These methods were the use of environmental conditions as scientific authority, the creation of popular public identities, and promotion of the power of technology to discover hidden truths of the universe. Mars and Popular Astronomy draws upon resources in several manuscript and correspondence collections from archives housed at Lowell Observatory, Caltech, Huntington Library, and University of California, Santa Cruz. This study also relies on contemporary newspapers and popular magazines. When pieced together, these documents reveal the tactics that scientists and science popularizers used in their efforts to define, create, and control popular science. They also show how competing interests overlapped and how participants in the debates grappled with definitions of scientific authority and the parameters for responsibility and accountability in science communication. -

FROM THE ACADEMY: SACKLER COLLOQUIA SACKLER COLLOQUIA The National Academy of Sciences at 150 Steve Olson1 Seattle, WA 98121 On March 3, 1863, Senator Henry Wilson of Massachusetts rose in the Senate chamber to, as he told his colleagues, “take up a bill...to incorporate the National Academy of Sciences.” He read two short paragraphs concerning membership and the obligation of the Academy to “whenever called upon by any department of the Government, investigate, examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art.” The Senate passed the bill by voice vote, and a few hours later, the House passed it without comment. Later that evening, President Abraham Lincoln signed the bill into law. In the century and a half since 1863, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has grown from a small band of 50 charter members—each of whom was specified in the founding legislation—to an organization of more than 2,500 national members and foreign associates. In 1916, the Academy created the National Research Council, which today recruits thousands of specialists each year from the scientific and technological communities to participate in the Academy’s advisory work. The establishment of the National Academy of Engineering in 1964 and the Institute of Medicine in 1970 resulted in a multifaceted institution that investigates issues ranging widely across the sciences, technology, and health. The charter members of the Academy, who met for the first time on April 22, 1863, in the chapel at New York University, scarcely could have envisioned what their fledgling organization would become. f) 0 o () t) <t •I • A Quiet Prelude I892-I9S7 GILBERT This history could begin any time after the first human beings discerned a man, a maiden, or a rabbit on the Moon's face, but let us skip all the early studies that had only a peripheral influence on lunar geology in the Space Age.' Our modern line ofinquiry began in August 1892. People seem to need heroes, so let us consider Grove Karl Gilbert (1843 1918) of the U.S. Geological Survey. Gilbert was surely one of the greatest geologists who ever lived, and his genius touched almost all aspects of the sci ence : geomorphology, glaciology, sedimentation, structure, hydrology, and geo physics.' He was in Berkeley in April 1906 when he awoke early one morning "with unalloyed pleasure" at realizing that a vigorous earthquake was in prog ress, and he caught the first available ferry to San Francisco. He carefully re corded how long the subsequent fire took to consume the wooden buildings on Russian Hill (where I now live) and contributed major parts of the subsequent official report. I-lis personality seems to have been mild and subdued, even "saintlike," in an era of rough-hewn and feisty pioneers ofwestern geology. His recent biographer Stephen Pyne has applied to him the same term Gilbert applied to the Geological Survey: a great engine of research.3 In 189 I, while chief geologist of the Survey (the insider's term for the USGs), Gilbert was attracted by reports oflarge amounts ofmeteoritic iron, the Canyon Diablo meteorites, around a crater in Arizona then called Coon Mountain or Coon Butte.' Apparently he had already been thinking about the possible impact origin of lunar craters, and he alone realized that the Coon crater might itself be a "scar produced on the earth by the collision of a star." If so, a large iron meteorite might lie buried beneath the crater. -
