Annual Report Dishantar Sanstha Annual Report 2013-14 F L A T N O . 1 1 , L A U K I K A PARTMENT , M ARKANDI , T AL. C HIPLUN , D IST . R ATNAGIRI , M AHARASHTRA P I N - 4 1 5 6 0 5 . Annual Report 2013-14 PREFACE Its my pleasure to present annual report of Dishantar for the fiscal year 2013-14. I remember starting point of our journey long back in 2002 with intervention in one village and now we have intervened across three blocks of Ratnagiri district. We have initiated our social contribution from hamlets of Katkari community. We have been supporting them in strive for economic and social development. Today, after 10 prolonged years, we can see some noteworthy changes in their hamlets. For instance, Nirbade Katkari hamlet has turned out to be an ideal Katkari Hamlet today. Not only materialistic but we can also see the change in behavior pattern of the community. Community was previously featured as drunkard. Today, 95% community members are free from liquor abuse. All the children above 3.5 years go to Z.P. schools. 3 youngsters have opted for higher education; one of them is studying software engineering degree. 94% households have concrete houses through Indira Awas Yojana. 6% houses are in the process of construction under schemes for Adivasi Community. Dishantar is trying to make them technology friendly by providing low cost zero maintenance and membrane technology based water purifier and solar lanterns. While taking up wide range of activities like I Love My Planet, Jara Hath Tum Badhana, Humko Manki Shakti Dena, Ek Prayas Gaon Vikas & Aadishakti, Dishantar predominantly continued its presence in each of the activity and also endeavoured to enable creativity and quality in each of the activity. This is one of the several reasons for everyone who is affiliated with Dishantar would feel proud. Institutional Donors like Goodlass Nerolac Charitable Trust, Konkan Krishi Education & Research Institute & Sahyadri Education Institute and Programme Support Partners like Shree Siddhivinayak Ganpati Mandir Trust & Shree Vitthalrao Joshi Charities Trust were the pioneer partners contributed greatly in laying foundation of Dishantar this year. I am thankful to the Board members who commit themselves readily for ensuring transparent and accountable governance of Dishantar. I appreciate support of all the partners, volunteers and team of Dishantar who are stakeholders of prestigious “Dhyas Social Excellence Award 2013” of Dhyas Social Foundation, Pune for our contribution in social transformation for sustainable, participatory, democratic peoples‟ development based on freedom, equity and justice. This award is the result of the trust, confidence and magnanimous support provided by all of them. Rajesh P. Joshte [1] Annual Report 2013-14 Institutional Donors: . Adre Grampanchayat, Chiplun, . Adre Primary Health Centre, Chiplun Sanitation Campaign on Guhagar Sea Beach: Dishantar has been implementing Vasundhara Samruddhi Programme. This programme aims at every possible action for the prosperity of our own earth. Coastlines of Konkan have become favorite places for the tourists from all over nation. Many international tourists are also seen on these coastlines. Hence, to promote awareness about maintaining hygiene and cleanliness on such tourist places, Dishantar had organized this [2] Annual Report 2013-14 campaign on Guhagar Sea-Beach. Guhagar Nagar Panchayat, Balsagar Yuva Manch, Chikhli, 75 volunteers, Nagar Panchayat Elected Representatives, Revenue Officer and Staff of Revenue Dept. along with Sanitation labors participated in this campaign. The campaign succeeded in collection of 2 tons of garbage mounds. Umbrella & Books Distribution to Katkari School-going Children: Dishantar has been implementing Helping Hand for Underprivileged Community Programme. Under this programme, umbrellas & story books have been distributed amongst school going children from Dalvatne & Nirbade Katkari hamlets. The objective was to diffuse the reading culture amongst small children as well as to make the children familiar with great people & enhance their general knowledge. Course Books Distribution to 56 bright students from economically weaker sections in remote areas: Students from remote areas of Konkan have thirst for education. Unfortunately, many a times, poverty becomes the major hurdle to quench this thirst. To support the bright but poor students to overcome this hurdle, this year we have provided free of cost course books to Junior College students. Shree [3] Annual Report 2013-14 Siddhivinayak Ganpati Mandir Trust, Prabhadevi has supported this initiative by making the books available free of cost. As a result, book banks have become functional in 4 colleges from Guhagar & Chiplun block. Women‟s Meet: Adishakti initiative of Dishantar is being implemented to make women aware about their inherent power and developing their vision for being real stakeholders in family as well as society. As a part of this initiative, Women‟s meet has been organized in Adre village of Chiplun block. The facilitation was about the rights, responsibilities, laws, health and livelihood issues for women. Response was good and the meet resulted in formation of „Sakhi‟ Women Development Committee in Adre village. This committee is formed to work for women & child welfare and other development issues of the village. Free S.T. Pass to bright students from economically weaker sections of society: As mentioned previously, poverty is the major hurdle for students from economically weaker sections. When we have implemented free course book distribution programme, we were briefed about this issue. There are many students who travel 8- 30 kms. from remote areas and cannot afford the travelling cost. Many of them were in a state to stop their education. We have managed to help 30 such students from Rampur and Anjanvel college. We have [4] Annual Report 2013-14 made provisions for their second term travel cost. For this purpose, we have utilized Dhyas Social Excellence Award amount of Rs. 51,000/- and Konkan Agricuture Education & Research Institute has also supported this initiative. Team Dishantar is satisfied by this action as we have brought programme for target group and not target group for programme. Interface on health issues with Teenage Girls: Adolescent girls in rural areas live predominantly without voices, options and opportunities to increase their social and economic potential which could advance themselves, their families and their communities. Enabling girls to be confident decision-makers within their homes and in society can best be identified through the articulation of transformations in thought and action. This interface was first step towards this transformation. Psychologist from Vitthalrao Joshi Trust facilitated the dialogue with girls. The focus was on health, hygiene, diet and exercise for health living. Health & Dental Check-up camp & Iron, calcium Tonic, toothpaste & toothbrush Distribution to primary students of Z.P. Schools from Guhagar block: Oral health is not only important to your appearance and sense of well-being, but also to your overall health. Cavities and gum disease may contribute to many serious conditions, such as diabetes and respiratory diseases. Untreated cavities can also be painful and lead to serious infections. Studies are also currently examining whether there is a link between poor oral health and heart disease and between poor oral health and women delivering pre-term, low birth rate (PLBW) babies. It has also been observed that 90% children have cavities in 70% teeth in our district. [5] Annual Report 2013-14 Hence, considering significance of physical and oral health, we have organized health & dental check-up camp for Z.P. primary school children. Expert doctors from Vitthalrao Joshi Trust along with Dr. Robin Davis from U.K. have examined the children. Iron, Calcium Tonics and a gift of toothpaste and toothbrush have fascinated the children. Children who required follow up treatment or major surgeries were attended further through follow up services by Vitthalrao Joshi Trust. Distribution of Domestic Water Purifiers to Katkari Community Households under “Pilot Project of Safe Drinking Water”: We have been working with Nirbade Rajawadi hamlet of Katkari community from last 10 years. After 10 years of prolonged intervention, we can see the community adopting civilization with noteworthy developments. Still miles to go… We have seen that every year they suffer from water transmitting diseases like cholera, typhoid, hepatitis A and dysentery amounting to expenses around 3000-5000 per family. Being economically weaker, diseases increase the borrowings of the community. Hence

K. Puram, New Delhi-110066 FOREWORD Salinity is a significant challenge and poses risks to sustainable development of Coastal regions of India. If left unmanaged, salinity has serious implications for water quality, biodiversity, agricultural productivity, supply of water for critical human needs and industry and the longevity of infrastructure. The Coastal Salinity has become a persistent problem due to ingress of the sea water inland. This is the most significant environmental and economical challenge and needs immediate attention. The coastal areas are more susceptible as these are pockets of development in the country. Most of the trade happens in the coastal areas which lead to extensive migration in the coastal areas. This led to the depletion of the coastal fresh water resources. Digging more and more deeper wells has led to the ingress of sea water into the fresh water aquifers turning them saline. The rainfall patterns, water resources, geology/hydro-geology vary from region to region along the coastal belt.

UN appeals for USD 6.7 billion to fight virus in poor countries The United Nations called on governments, companies and billionaires to contribute to a USD 6.7 billion fund for immediate needs in fighting the coronavirus pandemic in vulnerable countries. The UN''s initial USD 2 billion appeal unveiled on March 25 was being increased because there is already evidence of incomes plummeting and jobs disappearing, food supplies falling and prices soaring, and children missing vaccinations and meals. The USD 6.7 billion will fund the UN''s humanitarian response plan to help the world’s most vulnerable people deal with the pandemic now and in the coming months. The amount will be updated before the end of June because the pandemic has created "a very fast-moving situation", and will likely be revised upward again to meet needs in 2020. Ratnagiri - 415703 (M.S.), (India) 2 Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, New Panvel (W), Navi Mumbai - 410 218 [email protected] Abstract Electrical resistivity is one of the most effective ge ophysical methods for investigating the presence of groundwater. In a hard rock terrain like the Kolhapur, Ratnagiri and adjoining regions in the Deccan Volcanic Province of Maharashtra, the nature and extent of we athering may vary significantly, depending mostly on the presence of fractures and lineaments at depth and the geomorphological features at the surface. Hence , electrical resistivity studies are vital in a hard rock terrain for identification and analysis of concealed lineaments and fractures zones. An attempt is made here to understand the tectonic framework of over Devrukh-Ganapatipule region and Malkapur- Sakarpa-Ratnagiri region and its relation to the movement of groundwater. A total of 43 vertical electrical soundings we re conducted in Devrukh-Ganapatipule and Malkapur-Sakarpa-Ratnagiri region. The profile over the Malkapur- Ratnagiri area was divided into two profiles. It is observed from the two dimensional geoelectric cross-section that this region has more potential groundwater aquifers than the previous profile.
