This • tract is historically famous for its long coast line and convenient harbors', together with • its comparative nearness to the Arabian Coast. For the administrative convenience • and industrial and agricultural development Ratnagiri district was divided into Ratnagiri • and Sindhudurg with effect from 1st May 1981. The word 'Konkan' is of Indian origin • • • 5 • • • • • • and Sand Stones, Shales ( Kaladagis) and river beds covers over an area of about 248 Sq. • Kilometers. • Hydro geologically, the district is hilly, 85 % area of the district comes under hilly zone. There • is very less potential for ground water development. Most of the wells in the district are domestic wells. Eastern portion of the district covered by Basalt and heavily eroded due to • highly undulating topography and high rain fall. • Weathered mantle is very thin, hence most of the wells in this area are seasonal. • Average depth is about 8 to 10 meters, Western portion of the district is mostly covered by • Lateritic plateau. Laterite rock thickness ranges between6 meters to 60 meters. Laterite is • highly porous and permeable ,hence watertable fluctuation is more. Wells in this zone are deep. Lithomergic clay located below Laterite acts as an aquiclude. Existing Bore hole data • indicates that deeper aquifer is also not promising. Average depth of boreholes is about 50 to • 60 meters. Bore well success ratio is also poor and percentage of high yielding bores is very • less. • Hot water springs are found in various parts of the district. Temperature of these • springs ranges from 33.5 degree (C) to 61.0 degree (C) Important springs in the district are • a) Unhavare, b) Aravalli, • c) Unhale, • d) Rajawadi & • e) Sangameshawar. • • • • • • • • • • • • • 6 • • .,.. • • • and of considerable antiquity, though the origin of the name has never been sufficiently • explained. The seven kingdoms of the Konkan of Hindu mythology are mentioned in • the 'Hindu History of Kashmir' and are said to have included nearly the whole west • coast of India. The Pandavas, are said to have passed through this region in the 13the • year of their exile and had settled in this area for some time. The Raja of this region Veerat Ray had accompanied them in the famous war at Kurukshetra with the • Kauravas. In Ratnagiri district there are caves at Chiplun, Khed, , • , Gavhani-Velgaum and Vade padel. In the 2nd Century A.D. the great • empire of Mauryas take possession of the entire Konkan coast. In the middle of the • Sixth Century, Kings of the Maurya and Nala dynasties appear to have been ruling in • the Konkan. The district of Ratnagiri was under the Silaharas and the capital of their • kingdom was probably and later it may have been transferred to a more central place in the vicinity of Ratnagiri or Kharepatan. was one of the most • ancient towns in Konkan, probably founded by Chandraditya , a son of the Chalukya • King Pulakeshin II. The Portuguese power slowly declined and with the rise of , • the hold of Sultans on the district was lost by 1675 and the district passed finally into • the hands of Marathas. Marathas continued to rule the district till 1817 i.e., when the • struggle between the British ad the Peshvas come to an end and the whole of Konkan • was transferred to the British. In 1819 South Konkan was formed as a separate district. Its headquarters was first at and later at Ratnagiri. Three northern sub-divisions • were transferred to district in 1830 and the district was reduced to a sub• • collectorate level under . In 1833, it was again made a full pledged district • and named as Ratnagiri district. In 1891 the district had the following sub-division • Devgad, Ratnagiri, Sangameshwar, Vengurla, Malwan, Rajapur, Chiplun, Khed, Dapoli talukas and Guhagar and Mandangad petas. There were no major changes between " 1891 and 1931. In 1945 and in 1949 (from Sawantwadi) and Lanja new • tahsils were formed. With the reorganization of the States in 1956, the district was • included in the Bombay State. Since 1960, it forms a part of Maharashtra. At the time • of 1961 Census the district comprised of 11 talukas and 4 tahsils included 1,516 • inhabited villages covering 13 towns. During the decade of 1961-71, the tahsils were • upgraded as talukas; thus raising the number of talukas to 15. In 1971, the district had • 15 Tahsils comprising of 1,519 villages (including 5 uninhabited) and 15 towns. With • • • 7 • • .. • • • the upgrading of hamlets and wadis in the district, the total number of villages has gone • upto 2,043 (including 5 uninhabited) in 1981. Kankavli census town was created in • 1981. Due to declassification the number of towns has gone down from 15 in 1971 to • 13 in 1981. After the 1981 census the district has been divided into two. Ratnagiri and • Sindhudurg. In 1991 Ratnagiri district has 9 Tahsils and 8 towns with 4 uninhabited • villages and 1,515 inhabited villages. During 2001, Census Number of Tahsils are some as 9 (in 1991), but 3 Census towns declassified, 5 villages received the status of • census towns and 26 new villages have been created after 1991Census. • • 3.3 Administrative Set-Up • Ratnagiri district is included in . Thus for 2001 census the • State has 35 districts spread over 6 divisions in Maharashtra. Ratnagiri district consist • of 10 towns and 1543 villages spread over 9 Tahsils viz., Mandangad (109), Dapoli • (176), Khed (215), Chiplun(165),Guhagar (121), Ratnagiri (199), Sangameshwar (198), Lanja (122), and Rajapur (238). For administrative purposes, the district is divided into • 5 sub-divisions viz., Ratnagiri, Dapoli, Khed, Rajapur and Chiplun and 9 Tahsils. • Ratnagiri sub-division includes Ratnagiri, Sangameshwar and Dapoli sub-division • includes Dapoli, Mandangad and Khed sub- division includes Khed and Chiplun sub• • division includes Chiplun, Guhagar and Rajapur sub-division includes Rajapur, Lanja • Tahsils. • 3.4 Physical features • a) Location and Size • • Ratnagiri district lies along the west coast forming a part of traditional 'Konkan Land' between 160 13' to 180 04' North Latitudes and 730 02' to 73 0 52' East • Longitudes. The district is bounded by Raigarh district in the north, Arabian Sea towards • the west, Sindhudurg district on the south and Satara, and Kolhapur districts to • the east. The headquarters of the district is at Ratnagiri, a town having population of • 70,383 persons, which is 370 kms far from capital of Maharashtra, . It is well • connected from Mumbai and Kanyakumari by which passes through • the district. District also has a good network of roads which connects it from the other • • • • • • • • • • parts of the country. The district has an area of 8,208sq.kms and a population of • 1,696,777 persons as per Census 2001. While the area of the district accounts for 2.7 • percent of the total area of the State, the districts populationconstitutes1.8 percent of • the total population of the State. The density of population is 207 persons per sq. km. • Among the 35 districts of the State, the district ranks 18th in terms of area, 23rd in terms • of population and 27th in terms of density. • b) Physiographic India has been divided into four macro level physical divisions i.e. The Northern • Mountains, The Great Plains, The Deccan Plateau, and The Coastal Plains and • Islands. Maharashtra falls under two of these macro level divisions 1) The Deccan • Plateau, and 2) The Coastal Plains and Islands. The north-south running Sahyadri • range separates these two divisions. The Deccan Plateau lies to the east while the • Coastal Plains and Islands lie to the west up to the Arabian Sea. The Deccan Plateau is much larger of the two divisions and includes twenty nine districts of the State while • only six districts lie in the Coastal Plains and Islands. The whole Deccan Plateau is • sub-divided into 12 mesa regions. Of these, only 2 mesa regions i.e. Northern • Maharashtra and The Maharashtra Plateau lie within the State. Northern Maharashtra • is further divided into 2 micro regions i.e. The Tapi-Purna Valley and The Wardha• • Penganga- Wainganga Plain. The Maharashtra Plateau is also further sub-divided into • 2 micro regions i.e. The Eastern Plateau and The Western Plateau with Protruded Hills. The Coastal Plains and Islands are divided into 4 mesa regions i.e. Gujarat • Region, Western Coastal Region, Eastern Coastal Region and The Islands. Of these, • The Western Coastal Region covers Maharashtra. This region is divided into 4 micro • level regions i.e. Maharashtra Littoral, Goa Coast, Karnataka Coast and North Kerala • Coast. Only Maharashtra Littoral falls within the state of Maharashtra. The hierarchies • of these macro, mesa and micro level physiographical divisions within Maharashtra • State are asbelow: • • • • • • • • • • • • • (A) Deccan Plateau: • (i) Northern Maharashtra: • (a) Tapi-Purna Valley: Includesthe districts of Nandurbar, , , • Buldana, , and . • (b) Wardha-Penganga-Wainganga Plain: Includes the districts of Wardha, • , , ,Gondiya, and Chandrapur. • (ii) Maharashtra Plateau: • (a) Eastern Maharashtra: Includes the districts of , Jalna, • , Hingoli, , Bid, Osmanabad, , , Sangli • and Kolhapur.

• (b) Western Maharashtra with Protruded Hills: Includes the districts of • ,Ahmadnagar, and Satara. • (B) Coastal Plains and Islands: • (i) Western Coastal Plains: • (a) Maharashtra Littoral: Includes the districts of Thane, Palghar, • Mumbai (Suburban), Mumbai, Raigarh,Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. • Ratnagiri district forms a part of the Maharashtra littoral, the micro level division of Coastal Plains. District as a whole is a hilly • tract. Over 85 per cent of the land surface is hilly. On the basis of • local variation in relief and other characteristics the district can be • grouped into three parts. • (b) The Sahyadri Hills, which is main system of hills and spreads • along the eastern boundary of the district • • (i) Ratnagiri Plateau the transverse chains of small hills which • projecting towards west from the Sahyadri hills and run • parallel to each other. and • (ii) The Ratnagiricoast. • • • • • • • • • • • (i) Sahyadri Hills in the district spread elongated over the • parts of Mandangad, Khed, Chiplun, Sangameshwar, • Lanja and Rajapur Tahsil in the north-south direction in • the extreme east of the district. The hills have an • elevation of over 200 meters which is more than 600 meters at the upper reaches and is characterized by

• having very steep slopes. The highest spot height is 1,239

• meters in Khed Tahsil. It slopes towards west. In fact it is

• western scarp of Sahyadri. It is densely covered by • forests.

• (ii) The Ratnagiri plateau has an elongated north-south • extent varying considerably in width through the • centre of the district. It covers parts of all the Tahsils of • the district. In this portion hill ranges run parallel to • each other and as a result the numerous streams, • which flow through the valleys, have formed a parallel • drainage pattern. The height of plateau varies between • 100 meters and 200 meters from mean sea level. The • slopes of hills have partly eroded, yellowish red soils, • which are shallow in depth, coarse in texture and poor • in fertility. However in Kharif season, rice, ragi, small • millets, Kodra, Kulthi, Udid etc. are grown in this area. • In the valleys areca nut and coconut gardens thrive • well in deep sandy loams. Cashew nut, Jackfruits, • Kokam and world renowned Alphonso mangoes are • also grown on the slope of hills, mainly in Ratnagiri and • Rajapur Tahsils. • • • • 11 • • .. • • • • • (iii) The Ratnagiri Coast is extending in a narrow strip of • land running the entire length of the district covering • parts of Rajapur, Ratnagiri, Guhagar, Dapoli and • Mandangad Tahsils. It attains the height below 100 meters. This coast is cliffy and erosion seems to be

• predominant as can be seen from the number of wave

• cut platform and cliffs. Beaches,in general, are not well • developed and are very narrow and occur only in small • patches. Some patches of salty land are also found in • the low lying areas. These coastal strips in Dapoli, • Guhagar, Ratnagiri and Rajapur Tahsils have a deep • sandy loam soils. In which coconut and areca nut • gardens thrive well. Rice, Ragi, Kulthi and other crops • are grown in the kharif season. • c) Drainage

• All the rivers in the district originate from Sahyadri ranges and flow from • east to west and merge in the Arabian Sea. Vasishthi is the most important river • of the district from the point of view of length as well as navigational facilities. • Other rivers of some importance are Shastri, Bav, Ratnagiri, Muchkundi, • Jaitapur and Jagbudi. However, the rivers in this district one of great value from • the point of view of navigation and fisheries. Parts of these rivers are tidal. • d) Rainfall • Climatic conditions in the district are strongly influenced by its • geographical conditions. Being a coastal district, variation in the temperature • during the day and throughout the season is not large. Maximum temperature at • the coast rarely goes beyond 3SoCand in the interior; it seldom crosses 40°C • owing to proximity to the sea. Climate of the district is very humid and relative • humidity seldom goes below 50 percent. Total rainfall and its month wise • • • 12. • • • • • • distribution is an important factor affecting crop production and land use • intensity. The average annual rainfall in the district is 3787 mm. nearly 91 • percent of rainfall is received in fourmonths i.e., June to September. Therefore, • crop production is concentrated only in kharif season and there is very little • cropping in rabior hot weather season. Since, the rainfall is very high and • assured the kharif season crop is assured. The concentration of rainfall during four months coupled with lateritic soils has imposed restrictions on availability of • irrigation facilities and also drinking water in summer season. There are some • post monsoon rains in October and November, which enable growing some rabi • pulses and vegetables after harvest of kharif rice on residual moisture. Rajapur • (4616mm) and Sangameshwar (4785 mm) are the high rainfall receiving tahsils • in Ratnagiri district. • e) Climate • • Ratnagiri district being a coastal district, the variation of temperature during the day and through the seasons is not large. Owing to the proximity of the sea, the • percentage of humidity is more and the climate is generally moist and humid. Broadly, • the year may be divided into three seasons, the summer season from March to May, • the monsoon season from June to October and the winter season from November to • February. In the hot season, temperature rises slowly from March to May and May is • the hottest month. With the onset of the monsoon, the temperature drops by three to four degrees. Day temperature during the monsoon is lower than those in the cold • season. In the post-monsoon months of October and November, day temperature • increases and days in October are as hot as in May. Night temperature is the lowest in • January. Rajapur has the highest maximum temperature i.e. 34°C and Chiplun has the • lowest minimum temperature i.e. 18°C. Generally the temperature of the district • fluctuated between 20°Cto 33.50C. Within the district, the seasons show local variation • also. Some of the areas of the coast are the most pleasant, particularly in hot months sea breeze is enjoyable nearly throughout the day. Further inland, during the hot • months both days and nights can be impressive more so in the tract at the foot of the • . Along the coast the maximum temperature rarely goes beyond 400 • • • • 13 • • .. • • • centigrade. During the monsoon, skies are heavily clouded. Winds are very strong and •.. mainly westerly or southwesterly. The monsoon bursts over the district generally by the beginning of June and the • rains continue with little intermission till about the middle of October. Rainfall is not • uniform in all parts of the district. It increases rapidly from the coast towards the • Western Ghats on the eastern border of the district. In and around Ghats rainfall is very • heavy. Practically the entire annual rainfall occurs during the months from June to • October. Highest rainfall is received in the month of July. The highest annual rainfall • occurs in Rajapur town i.e. 4589.0 mm. and the lowest annual rainfall reported in Guhagar towns i.e. 3091.0 mm. During the pre and post monsoon months, the district • experiences very strong winds sometimes reaching gale force particularly near the • coast and heavy rain in association with cyclonic storms which develop in the Arabian • sea and move in close proximity to the coast. Thunderstorms are common in the post • monsoon months and the latter part of the hot season. • f) Natural Wealth Minerals

• Of all the districts in Konkan Division, Ratnagiri district seems to be • favourably placed with regard to the availability of some of the important • minerals. Manganese and Iron Ores are found in the southern part of Ratnagiri • district. Limonite is found along the coast from Purangad to Malgund in • Ratnagiri Tahsil. Silica is found in Rajajpur Tahsil, Bauxite is found in • Mandangad and Dapoli Tahsils. Rajapur Tahsil is also blessed with deposits of silica sand and annually thousands of tons of silica sand is being dispatched to • places like Mumbai, Pune, Kolhapur, Belgaum, Ichalkaranji etc. The feldspar, a • minor mineral found in this district can be used in the manufacture of potteries. • Other minor minerals found in the district are mica, mineral pigments such as • clay, asbestos, building stones, glass, sand, copper, salt, limestone etc. • Radioactive, minerals like Uranium oxide are also found in some parts of the • district. • • • • • 14 • ., • • • • • g) Fisheries • Ratnagiri is one of the most important maritime district in Maharashtra. Therefore, marine fishery is naturally an important economic activity in the district. • Fishing is done all along the coast, in the sea, generally up to 65 kms from the coast. • The important fishery centres in the district are Harnai, Dabhol, Jaigad, Ratnagiri and • Jaitapur. Fishing activities are carried out during nine months from September to May. • The commercially important varieties of fish available in quantities are Bangada, Tarli, • Pedva, Mushi, Shingada, Paplet, Halwa, Gedar, Surmai, Zinga, Dhoma, Ghol, Karli, and Ravas etc. besides these clam and oysters are also available along the entire • coastal line, mainly in the creeks and backwaters. A major portion of the fish caught is • transported by sea to Mumbai. There is also a good local demand at Chiplun, • Sangmeshwar and Lanja. About 60 per cent of the fish is sold fresh, 30 per cent salt • and wet cured and about 10 per cent sundried. The salt dried fish goes even to more • distant towns in Maharashtra and in southern States. The sundried small fish is • powered in the local grinding mill at Ratnagiri. Oil from Shark liver is extracted at various centres. Supply of Shark fins and air bladders of fishes form an important item • of trade. Prawns are also exported. With a view to improve the socio-economic • condition of the fishermen and to augment the fish supply, several developmental • schemes are introduced by the Fisheries Department. • h) Soil and Cropping Pattern • • The soil of the district is generally classified in three parts i.e. (1) Lateritic soil (2) • Salty soil and (3) Coastal alluviums. • i) Lateritic soil • The predominant soils in the district are lateritic soils and extensive • spreads of lateritic are noticed throughout the district. They vary in colour from • red to brownish red, owing to the preponderance of hydrated iron oxides. They • are fairly well supplied with nitrogen and organic matter. Their texture is loamy. • They are porous and not retentive of moisture. These soils are found in several • grades, the main being rice soil and varkas soil. Both of these soils are available • • • 15 • • • • • • on the slopes of the hill and are partly eroded yellowish red and poor in fertility. • Further they are shallow in depth and coarse in texture. Ragi (nagIi) is the • principal crop in these soils and it responds well to suppliers of nitrogen and • phosphate. The cultivation of groundnut has also picked up in the recent year. • The district is famous for its mango crop specially the world renowned Alphonso. • Plenty of Cashew nut grows in this area. On the mountain tops are the perennial • forests, where varkas soils are rich in humus because of their being protected • from erosion. They are reddish-brown in colour. • Most of these soil being brought under plantations. Entire landscape is also dotted with Coconut, Kokum, Areca nut and Jackfruit trees which thrive well • in these soils and climate. Spices like pepper and other pulses are also • cultivated especially in the coastal area. • • j) Salty soil • Due to the inundation of the sea a part of the coastal soils has become • salty. They are locally known as 'Khar' 'Khajan'. • k) Coastal alluviums • The coastal strips have deep sandy loams and in these soils coconut and • areca nut gardens thrive well. • I) Forest • • This includes all land classified as forest under any legal enactment dealing with • forest or administered as forest, whether state owned or private and whether wooded • or simply maintained as forest land. Within the forest area itself there may be occasionally cultivated patches or grazing lands, but such area are shown under • column 19 as forest. The process of regularization of land grants and effecting relevant • changes in the basic records of survey and settlement are somewhat protracted and • time consuming. Therefore the information based on records is in some cases at least, • likely to be different when compared with the actual field situation. • • • • • • •.. • • m) Industry • .. Industrially, Maharashtra is one of the advanced states in the country but • Ratnagiri is one of the most industrially under-developed districts in the state. There are • very few industries in the district. They are located in Ratnagiri, Chiplun and Khed Tahsils. The employment in non- agricultural sector depends mainly upon the village ..• and cottage industries. The industrial policy of the state is based on the decision to encourage industries in the developing and under developed areas in the district and to • disperse industries from the heavily congested areas of Mumbai, Thane and Pune. In • the district, there are industrial estates in Mirzole (Ratnagiri), Zadgaon (Ratnagiri), • (Chiplun) and Loteparshuram (Khed) village. The main large scale industries • located in these industrial estates are J.K. Files, Narmada Cement, Henkel Chemicals Ltd, Safeast Company Pvt. Ltd., Ganekhadpoli Mahalaxmi Textile Chiplun, Nocil Lote • mad Khed and Febina Textile Chiplun. Medium sized industries include Lihan • Chemicals, Vanaj engineering Sadvali, Standard Compositors Chiplun and Konkan • Steel Ltd. Chiplun. The most important small scale industries in the district are cashew • nut processing, having a great demand in the national market, fruit preservation and • Silica processing. Other registered units are oil mills, saw mills, cements product, sodium silicate, laundry soap, printing, book binding, bidi making etc. Which are located • in Ratnagiri and Chiplun Tahsils. By the size of employment generated fishing is the • largest occupation in the district. Powder of dry fish is also used as a fertilizer; steel as • well as aluminium utensils are also prepared in Chiplun Tahsil. Iron door, Windows and • Trunks are prepared in Ratnagiri Tahsil. •.. n) Trade and Commerce The district is well known for the "Alphonso" and "Raiwal" varieties of • mangoes, mango plants are mainly grown in Ratnagiri Tahsil. The chief • manufactured articles of the district are Ayurvedic medicine, bakery products, • confectionary, refined oil, paper cable, wine, pickle, mango pulp etc. and chief exported commodities are mango, cashew nut, rice, fish, coconut, clay pots, • wine, alphanso mango, mango slices. This volume is often considered as sustainable yield of that river. Estimation of Bajri discharge through stream bed and its residence period (temporary • deposition) is one of the most difficult task in sediment budgeting as it requires sophisticated instruments and establishment of many gauging stations. It is axiomatic that during high flow • period, Bajri which is otherwise moved by siltation (i.e., partially suspension and partially bed • load) will completely be in suspension in the overlying waters. The best way for sediment discharge computation is to collect and analyze water samples from a river reach where the entire • particles come into suspension. It can be assumed that the Bajri and other coarser sediments in suspension would be deposited mainly in the river segment. The replenishment rate approach • has the virtue of scaling extraction to the river load in a general way, but bed load transport can be notoriously variable from year to year. Thus, this approach is probably better if permitted • extraction rates are based on new deposition that year rather than on long-term average bed load yields. The mined reach is the "upstream" sediment source for downstream reaches, so mining at • the replenishment rate could be expected to produce hungry water conditions downstream. Sediment yield estimation is an important parameter in the evaluation of the sediment effects on • the projects and activities occurring due to land use. Estimation of annual sediment yield produced from a single rainfall event requires applying many approaches to get acceptable and • valid results. These approaches were classified as a single event approach and an average annual approach, knowing that the most project designs require quantitative estimation of the • transported sediment volumes resulting from a single rainfall event.

• There are many sediment transport equations which are suitable for use in the prediction of the • replenishment rate of rivers/ watershed. Some of the famous sediment transport equations are:- • 1. Dandy - Bolton Equation 2. Yang Equations • 3. Engelund-Hansen Equation 4. Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE) developed by Williams and Berndt (1977) - it includes only one type of sediment yield (sheet and rill Erosion). Dandy - Bolton formula is often " used to calculate the sedimentation yield. The formula uses catchment area and mean annual • runoff as key determinants to give a yield value. It does not differentiate in basin wide smaller .. streams and their characteristics. Dandy and Bolton equation calculates all types of sediment yield i.e. sheet and rill Erosion, gully Erosion, channel Bed and bank erosion and mass movement " etc . .. DANDY - BOLTON EQUATION • Dandy Bolton formula is often used to calculate the sedimentation yield. But use of these equations to predict sediment yield for a specific location would be unwise because of the wide • variability caused by local factors not considered in the equations development. However, they may provide a quick, rough approximation of mean sediment yields on a regional basis for • preliminary watershed planning. Computed sediment yields normally would be low for highly erosive areas and high for well stabilized drainage basins with high plant density because the • equations are derived from average values. The equations express the general relationships between sediment yield, runoff, and drainage area. Many variables influence sediment yield from • a drainage basin. They include climate, drainage area, soils, geology, topography, vegetation and land use. The effect of any of these variables may vary greatly from one geographic location to .,• another, and the relative importance of controlling factors often varies within a given land resource area. Studies revealed that sediment yield per unit area generally decreases as drainage area increases. As drainage area increases, average land slopes usually decrease; and there is less probability of an intense rainstorm over the entire basin. Both phenomena tend to • decrease sediment yield per unit area. In arid regions, sparse precipitation and low run-off are the • limiting factors. As precipitation increases, density of vegetation also increases, resulting in less erosion. In areas with adequate and evenly distributed precipitation, vegetation thus becomes the • limiting factor. The accuracy of the sedimentation surveys varied, ranging from reconnaissance type measurements of sediment deposits to detailed surveys consisting of closely spaced • cross-sections or contours. Runoff data are translated to inches per year per unit area and • • 51 • • • sediment deposition data to tons per year per square mile of net drainage area. Net drainage area • is defined as the sediment-contributing area and normally excluded areas above upstream • reservoirs or other structures that were effective sediment traps. • Combined Effect of Drainage area and Run off on Sediment Yield Oandy- Bolton determined the combined influence of runoff and drainage area on sediment yield • to compute the sediment yield. They developed two equations i.e. for run off less than 2 inch and • for run off more than 2 inch, which are given below:- • For run off less than 2 inches • (Q < 2 in) 8=1280*(Q) 0.46 *[1.43-0.26 Log(A)]F • for run off more than 2 inches (Q > 2 in): 8= 1958*(e -0.055*Q )*[1.43-0.26 Log (A)] • Where: 8 = 8ediment yield (tons/sq miles/yr) • Q = Mean Annual runoff (inch) • A = Net drainage area in sq mile • S.No. Nameof Lengthof River CatchmentArea AverageAnnual Probable Replenishment River Runup (By calculation of • Sediment Yield by Dandy • Bolton formula) 1 Savitri 32 320 400 1,54,537 • 2 Vashisti 47 940 400 1,42,468 1,54,551 3 Shastri 55 1100 400 -- • 4 Jagbudi 31 620 400 1,54,522 1000 400 1,54,508 • 5 Kajli 50 -- 6 Bav 70 1050 400 1,54,509 • 7 Muchkundi 50 1000 400 1,54,503 Arjuna 50 1000 400 1,54,508 • 8 -- • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 7) Map of District Resources Showing General Profile of the District

53 • • 8) Land utilization of Pattern of the District : Most of the area in the District is a • waste land due to occurrence of lateritic rocks I soils. Laterite is a porous rock and hence • do not hold water. Agricultural land is mostly located in form of isolated patches in the middle portion ( valiti l.e. portion in between 15 km from sea-coast and 15 km from • Sahayadri Hill range ). Forest land is mostly located on top & slopes of Sahayadri Hill range at various places. The map showing land use is appended below. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 54 • • • 9) Physiography of the District: The District has a long coastal plain abutting to the east against • a north-south trending escarpment forming a continental divide. The maximum elevation of "1239 m is observed near Maksandgarh in Sahyadri Ranges. The area closed to the Ghats is highly • dissected with deep valleys. The central part of the District has many flat topped hills rising to heights of about 300 mtrs. These plateaus show a gradual slope towards west. The Savitri, • Vashishti, Shastri,Kajri, Muchkundi, Sukh & Karli are some of the important westernly flowing rivers and meet Arabian Sea. The river system is young and due to heavy rainfall & they have • tremendous head ward erosion. • The outstanding feature in the relief of the District is its highly • uneven nature and very narrow riverine plains that fringe the coastline. About 45% of the area in Ratnagiri District is Hilly. On the east of this consists of steep and forbidding scarp of the main • Sahyadri's. In the center are traverses chains of small hills, which project from the main ranges, develop higher elevation in the middle portion. These are separated from each other by • undulating plateaus having area gradually increasing westward towards the coast. The Physiography of the area has given rise to five characteristics landforms, namely 1) Coastline 2) • Estuarine plains and river basins, 3) Lateritic Plateaus 4) Residual Hills and 5) Scarp faces of the Sahyadri proper. The lateritic plateau that occupies most of the district are either formed in-situ • from the lateritisation of Deccan Trap Basalt or are of secondary nature, formed due to the lateritic • material brought down from the Sahyadrian hill ranges. They are broad, compact and undulating. Based on the physical characteristics of the soils, they can be classified into five major • groups as follows; • 1) Coarse Shallow Soil :They are reddish brown in colour and occur on the slopes of the hills • and are partly eroded, poor in fertility, shallow in depth and coarse in texture. These soils are • ideal for Cashew and Mango plantations. • 2) Medium Deep Soil : These are reddish yellow in colour and have various names depending upon the place of occurrence. Those situated at higher elevations are known as Mal, while at • slightly lower levels are known as Kuyat. Near water courses, which have a fair supply of • water during Rabbi season are known as Panthal or Vaigan. Paddy is grown on these soils • during kharif. On Panthal soils pulses and summer paddy can also be grown. • 3) Deep Soil : They occur along river banks or valleys and are usually of mixed origin and are yellowish red to brown in colour. They are light, easily workable, well drained and fairly fertile. • Areca nut and coconut gardens are grown well on these soils. • 4) Coastal Alluvial Soils : They are found along the coastal strip and consist of deep sandy • loams suitable for Coconut and Areca nut. 5) Coastal Saline Soil : They are formed due to the inundation of the sea, where by part of • coastal soils become salty. They are locally known as Khar, Khajan, Kharvat etc. They are • found along coastal strip of Dapoli, Guhagar and Ratnagiri Tehsils. • • • • • • 55 • • • • 10) Rainfall in the District:

The district is bounded by Arabian Sea to the west, • Raigad district to the North, SataraSangli& Kolhapur distict towards east and Sindhudurg district • to the South. • The District is covered extensively by Deccan Basalt lavas of upper Cretaceous to palacogene age. The intrusive phase has limited extent. The Plateau tops along the coast are covered by • laterite. Quaternary formations comprising clay, silt, sand stone cover the laterite and basalt at few places along the coast. Quartzites of Kaladgi formations of neo proterozoic age occur as • isolated out crops in the southern part of the District. • The Deccan basalt are classified into mainly 'aa' and simple flows and has been grouped under the Sahyadri group and is divisible into three formations. The younger of these formations • is Dive Ghat formations and is confined to eastern half of the Districts uptoDevrukh in the south. This formation consist mainly 'aa' and simple type of flows. The overlying purandargarh formation • marked by Megacrystic flow (M4) of 20 to 25 mtr thickness with vary coarse to large size plagioclase phenocrysts. This formation is seen exposed at 350 to 400 mtrs level. The top • formation consists of 'aa' to simple type of flows which are felsparphyric and with • columnar joints. This formation is seen exposed along the border of the District. A near horizontal disposition of the basalt flows along the continental divide is significant. Flow • gradiant varies from 1:120 to 1:150 in westerly direction. Joints trend in N - S, E - W , ENE• • WSW, NWSE. Basic types of dolerite to gabbroic composition are noticed in the northern part of the district and extend in length upto 4 Kms. Some of the types are porphyritic in nature. Primary • laterite and laterite spread covering the deccan traps are noticed in vast areas of the District. In • the coastal area laterite capping is very extensive. Primary laterite has 15 to 25 mtr thickness. Bauxite, glass and foundry sand, ilmenite and lignite are some of the mineral occurrences of • economic significance. Workable bauxite deposits are present in the District near Dabhol. Bauxite occurrences are reported from , Chikhalgaon, Kavdoli, Umbarghat, Uthambar and Badne. • Bauxite deposits on the plateaus are of blanket type while along the coast it occur as pocket and lenses. Foundry grade silica sand is also reported near Oni, Mandrul, Watul, Fonda Ghat etc. • Lignite and Ilmenite occurrences are reported in the area in the south of Ratnagiri. • • • • • 56 • • • Hot springs of the District are seen near Aravli, Khed, Rajewadi, Sangameshwar and Tural. • The temperature varies from 350C at Khed and 700C to 75°C at Unale. • In addition to the above following information is also submitted. • a) Details of river or stream and other sand source in the District: • In Ratnagiri District total 8 major rivers are observed, they are Savitri, Vashishti, Shastri, Jagbudi, Kajli, Bav, Muchkundi and Jaitapur. All rivers originate in Sahyadri Hill ranges &flows • towards west and meet Arabian Sea. Most of the district in area is having steep slopes and due to heavy rains all river beds are flat and narrow. Most of the rivers are having length in between 40 • to 60 Kms. • River sand is occurring to the downstream side of all above mentioned rivers and number of • Nalas in adjoining river coarse. The details of sand Ghats auctioned / sanctioned for exploitation • are separately given. Apart from this, sand is occurring near Oni, Watul, Mandrul etc. in form of weathered sand • stones or quartzites.Total five mining leases for extraction of Silica Sand are sanctioned in this area and there are chances for additional occurrences for Silica Sand.
