Among them, 2 genera and 6 species were first records for Iran. Mites were extracted by means of Berlese funnels, cleared in lactophenol and mounted in Hoyer’s medium on microscopic slides. Introduction Oribatid mites (suborder Oribatida or Cryptostigmata), also called "moss mites" or "beetle mites" are one of the numerically dominant arthropod groups in most soils (NORTON & BEHAN-PELLETIER 2009). These mites are among the most abundant soil- living microarthropods reaching densities of up to 500.000 individuals per square meter in forest soil (SCHATZ & BEHAN-PELLETIER 2008). Some oribatid mites act as intermediate hosts of tapeworms of the Anoplocephalidae (STUNKARD 1937; AKRAMI et al. 2007). Oribatid mites have different feeding guilds such as phyllophage, xylophage, mycophage, bacteriophage, phycophage, zoophage, coprophage and necrophage (PANDE & BERTHET 1973). Shiraz township is located in the south of Iran and the northwest of Fars province. It is built in a green plain at the foot of the Zagros mountains 1,500 metres (4,900 feet) above sea level. In the not too distant past, we had very little information on the oribatid mites of Iran, and Iran was one of the few completely uninvestigated countries of the world in relation to the taxonomic study on its oribatid mite fauna, but in the past decade, our information and knowledge of Iranian oribatid mites has increased.

Using previously published DNA sequences and eco-morphological data available from the literature, we inferred the number of transitions between soil dwelling to a truly arboreal lifestyle in oribatid mites and the shape evolution of a particular morphological structure of a sense organ (bothridial seta (= sensillus) of a trichobothrium), the shape of which was previously reported to be associated with an arboreal lifestyle. Our data suggest that a truly arboreal lifestyle evolved several times independently in oribatid mites, but much less often than previously proposed in the past. Even though all truly arboreal species indeed seem to possess a capitate sensillus, this character is not exclusive for arboreal taxa. Nonetheless, since all truly arboreal species do have a capitate sensillus, this might be considered an important (pre-)adaptation to a life on trees. We further provide guidelines on how the term “arboreal” should be applied in future mite research and emphasize the importance of exact microhabitat characterization, as this will greatly facilitate comparisons across studies. In addition, two known species, Belba mongolica and B. crassisetosa, previously known from central part of the country are discussed. Key words: Acari, Oribatida, Damaeidae, new species, Mongolia Introduction The oribatid mite family Damaeidae shows extensive taxonomic diversity in Mongolia, and the author described or recorded about a dozen species from central and northern parts of the country (Bayartogtokh 2000a, b, c, d, 2001). The study of the oribatid mite biodiversity of Eastern Mongolia is subject of the ongo- ing research as part of the biodiversity assessments in various habitats of this region, and in the course of study about ten species of damaeid mites are found. The present paper deals with descriptions of two new species belonging to the genera Belba and Bel- bodamaeus, and supplementary descriptions of two known species of the former genus. The species of other genera will be discussed in a future paper. The eastern part of Mongolia is occupied mostly by very large steppe landscape with short and tall grasses, which encompassing several national parks and nature reserves.

These mites achieved the highest density in yew and cypress litter in a park in the inland town of Caserta, and the lowest density in pine litter at the coast of Capo Vaticano. In these mite communities, only 1–4 species were abundant, so the Shannon index H’ was rather low. The density of oribatid mites, species number, and dominance structure depended greatly on the kind of litter. The most abundant and common was Zygoribatula propinqua, but the highest density in yew litter was achieved by Oribatella superbula. In oribatid mite communities, the juveniles usually dominated, but the age structure of species greatly depended on the kind of litter. The mites have alwa\'.s attracted consideral)le interest, both from their minute size and because of the remarkable habits of man}^ spe- cies. Ahhough many have examined them in a desultor}^ way, Init few have really studied them. Consequently there is a great amount of literature by many persons, much of which is not reliable. Too often entomologists have considered that their knowledge of insects in general was a sufficient l^asis for the description of mites. Prob- ably the lack of general works on mites has been responsible for many errors. For years the only work treating of the mites as a whole that has been accessible to American naturalists is Andrew Murray's Economic Entomology; Aptera. In this ))ook, nearly 3()0 pages are devoted to Acarina. Unfortunately Murray's treatment is far from satisfactory and abundantly stored with mistakes, many, however, taken from other writers. Since that book was published several European specialists have been at work on the European fauna and produced monographs which are of great accuracv. Not only have many new facts been discovered, l)ut many of the old facts have ])een given quite new interpretations. Such a belief as the parasitism of the Uropoda on the Colorado potato- beetle seems hardly as yet to have been eradicated. To present a reli- able text to the Aujerican reader is my intention. Very frequently I have obtained many facts of importance and interest from the European literature; particularly is this true with those parasitic groups with which 1 am not so well acquainted.
