Abstract Altogether 37 predatory mite species from 14 families (Parasitiformes and Acariformes) were collected using leaf sampling and pit-fall trapping in strawberry fi elds (1997 - 2001). Thirty- six were recorded on strawberries for the fi rst time in Latvia. Two species, Paragarmania mali (Oud.) (Aceosejidae) and Eugamasus crassitarsis (Hal.) (Parasitidae) were new for the fauna of Latvia. The most abundant predatory mite families (species) collected from strawberry leaves were Phytoseiidae (Amblyseius cucumeris Oud., A. aurescens A.-H., A. bicaudus Wainst., A. herbarius Wainst.) and Anystidae (Anystis baccarum L.); from pit-fall traps – Parasitidae (Poecilochirus necrophori Vitz. and Parasitus lunaris Berl.), Aceosejidae (Leioseius semiscissus Berl.) and Macrochelidae (Macrocheles glaber Müll). Key words: agrocenosis, diversity, predatory mites, strawberry. Introduction Predatory mites play an important ecological role in terrestrial ecosystems and they are increasingly being used in management for biocontrol of pest mites, thrips and nematodes (Easterbrook 1992; Wright, Chambers 1994; Croft et al. 1998; Cuthbertson et al. 2003). Many of these mites have a major infl uence on nutrient cycling, as they are predators on other arthropods (Santos 1985; Karg 1993; Koehler 1999). In total, investigations of mite fauna in Latvia were made by Grube (1859), who found 28 species, Eglītis (1954) – 50 species, Kuznetsov and Petrov (1984) – 85 species, Lapiņa (1988) – 207 species, and Salmane (2001) – 247 species.

ABSTRACT: The aims of the present paper are to establish the specific structure of communities of prostigmatic and mesostigmatic mites in nests of the semi-collared flycatcher (Ficedula semitorquata) and to compare the fauna with the mites in nests of two other European flycatchers. For analysis of community structure of mites were used the indices: prevalence, relative density, mean intensity and dominance. Mite communities are strongly dominated by the species Dermanyssus gallinae and Ornithonyssus sylviarum, which were found with the highest frequency and dominance. The mite communities are characterized by a large number of subrecedent species. KEYWORDS: Acariformes, Parasitiformes, Nest of Bird, Community Structure INTRODUCTION The nests of different species of birds are an example of a fairly unstable and isolated habitat, with its own dependent on it specific fauna which involves different groups of invertebrate animals. One of the components of this fauna which demonstrates particular abundance is the arthropods, and more specifically, the mites. The studies of Parasitiformes show that mesostigmatic mites living in birds' nests vary both in terms of their species affiliation and the structure of their communities [4, 8]. Highly important with respect to veterinary science and medicine are a number of species, such as Ornithonyssus bursa, Ornithonyssus sylviarum, Dermanyssus gallinae harboured by birds, Ornithonyssus bacoti, harboured by rodents, etc.

A maturity index for gamasid soil mites (Mesostigmata: Gamsina) as an indicator of environmental impacts of pollution on forest soils. Appl. Soil Ecol. 9, 447– 452) in five natural forest reserves in eastern Austria. These sites were assumed to be stable and undisturbed reference habitats. The maturity indices of the gamasine communities were near their maximum in the investigated stands, and thus performed well towards the ‘‘high end’’ of the total range of the index. An occasionally inundated floodplain forest yielded much lower values. However, the correlation of the index with humus type, as proposed by Ruf et al. (Ruf, A., Beck, L., Dreher, P., Hund-Rienke, K., Ro¨mbke, J., Spelda, J., 2003. A biological classification concept for the assessment of soil quality: ‘‘biological soil classification scheme’’ (BBSK). Agric. Ecosyst. Environ. 98, 263–271) for managed forests, was not found. This indicates that the humus form is not a good predictor of the index over its entire range and is inappropriate to assess the fit of test communities. Fourteen percent of the species in this study were omitted from index calculation because adequate data for their families are lacking.

    Ectoparasites of Pine Voles, Microtus pinetorum, from Clark County, Illinois D. David Pascal, Jr. and John O. Whitaker, Jr. Department of Life Sciences Indiana State University Terre Haute, Indiana 47809 Introduction In studies on pine voles, only Hamilton (1938) and Benton (1955), both working in New York, attempted to collect and identify external parasites. Hamilton noted the mite, Laelaps kochi Oudemans, 1936 and lice of the genus Hoplopleura to be par- ticularly numerous. Benton reported Hoplopleura acanthopus (Burmeister, 1839) and Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Berlese, 191 1) as the most abundant pine vole ectoparasites. Ferris (1921) reported H. acanthopus from pine voles in New York and Iowa. Another louse, Polyplax spinulosa (Burmeister, 1839), was found to infest pine voles in Georgia (Morlan, 1952), although Rattus norvegicus and R. rattus are the true hosts for this louse (Pratt and Karp, 1953; Wilson, 1961). The occurrence on pine voles was accidental. Mite records (other than chiggers) on Microtus pinetorum have been summarized by Whitaker and Wilson (1974), but include LAELAPIDAE: Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Berlese, 1911), Laelaps kochi Oudemans, 1936, Haemogamasus longitarsus (Banks, 1910), H. liponyssoides Ewing, 1925, H. ambulans (Thorell, 1872), Laelaps alaskensis Grant, 1947, and Eulaelaps stabularis (Koch, 1836); GLYCYPHAGIDAE: Glycyphagus hypudaei (Koch, 1841) and Orycteroxenus soricis (Oudemans, 1915) LISTROPHORIDAE: Listrophorus pitymys Fain and Hyland, 1972; MYOBIIDAE Radfordia ensifera (Poppe, 1896) and R. lemnina (Koch, 1841); CHEYLETIDAE Eucheyletia bishoppi Baker, 1949. In addition, Smiley and Whitaker (1979) reported the following pygmephorid mites from Microtus pinetorum from Indiana: Pygmephorus equitrichosus Mahunka, 1975, P. hastatus Mahunka, 1973, P. scalopi Mahunka, 1973 and P. whitakeri Mahunka, 1973.

ISBN 80-86525-04-X The six most important caves in the surrounding of the Veľký Folkmar village, the Márnica Cave, the Predná veľká Cave, the Klenbová Cave, the Nová galéria Cave, the Cave Hoľa I, and the Zelená puklinová cave, were investigated for terrestrial arthropods during 2002. Invertebrates were collected by three types of pitfall traps differing in fixation solution (ethylalcohol, formaldehyde, ethylenglycol/beer; with exposition from March to June), by individual hand sampling (March - October) and by heat extraction of baits or organic materials. More then 1500 individuals of mites, pseudoscorpions, spiders, harvestmen, isopods, millipedes and centipedes were obtained and determined. The mites (especially Gamasida with 1062 individuals and 13 spp.) were the most abundant and diverse group. Spiders were also very rich in number of species (17 spp.). The mites Archipteria coleoptrata, Belba clavigera, Damaeus gracillipes, Damaeus cf. tecticola, Oribellopsis cavatica, Liacarus subterraneus, Oribella cf. forsslundi (Oribatida), Parasitus loricatus and Uroobovella advena (Gamasida), the spiders Meta menardi, Metellina merianae, Porrhomma convexum, and P. egeria, the opilionid Mitostoma chrysomelas, and the millipede Trachysphaera costata may be regarded as cavernicolous (eutroglophilous). The other species (Hexapoda excluded) are characterised as dwellers of forest soils and litter and penetrated into subterranean spaces more or less occasionally.

Published 26 February 1979.] ABSTRACT Two species of parasitic mites have been observed in nasal cavities of flying foxes: Opsonyssus asiaticus Fain, 1959 in Pteropus alecto and P. scapulatu8 (new host records) and Neospeleognathopsis (Pteropignathus) pteropus n. sp. from P. scapula tus, the latter representing a new subgenus of Neo­ speleognathopsis. INTRODUCfION In the nasal cavities of bats from Western Australia, the junior author col1ected two species of mites belonging to the family Gastronyssidae (Order Astigmata), and Ereynetidae (Order Prostigmata). One of these is a new species and is described here. A cross- sectional survey was conducted in 7 ecosystems of southern Vietnam from 2015 to 2016. Chigger mites were identified with morphological characteristics and assayed by polymerase chain reaction for detection of rickettsiaceae. Overall chigger infestation among rodents was 23.38%. The chigger index among infested rodents was 19.37 and a mean abun- dance of 4.61. A total of 2,770 chigger mites were identified belonging to 6 species, 3 genera, and 1 family, and pooled into 141 pools (10-20 chiggers per pool). Two pools (1.4%) of the chiggers were positive for Orientia tsutsugamushi. Rick- etsia spp. was not detected in any pools of chiggers. Further studies are needed including a larger number and diverse hosts, and environmental factors to assess scrub typhus.
