LaBudde Department of Special Collections NOT TO BE USED FOR PUBLICATION BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Harry Trotman was born December 21, 1920, in Haddonfield, New Jersey, the son of Frank and Helen Trotman. He attended Temple University briefly before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1944, he married Marjorie E. Duncan while stationed at Sedalia Army Air Base, which is currently Whiteman Air Base. He served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps and later the Air Force before retiring in 1985. He was the band leader of the Harry Trotman Orchestra, and owned and operated Trotman Music from 1975 to 1986. Harry Trotman passed away August 12, 2010. Source: http://www.shawneedispatch.com/obituaries/2010/aug/18/harry-trotman/ SCOPE AND CONTENT The Harry Trotman Collection was gifted to LaBudde Special Collections in February 2012 by Beth (daughter) and Bob Behrens. The collection contains for the most part handwritten scores and parts of jazz combo and jazz big band tunes, presumably for performance by the Harry Trotman Orchestra. The music manuscripts that are contained in this collection represent various stages of completion in the arranging process, and are a valuable insight into what sort of thought goes into it. Some tunes also have multiple arrangements for different-sized groups, which is of interest as well for one studying jazz orchestration. Miscellaneous items, memorabilia, and photographs round out the collection. SERIES NOTES SERIES I: JAZZ TUNES/ARRANGEMENTS Located in Box 1, Folders 1-28, Box 2, Folders 1-30, Box 3, Folders 1-32, Box 4, Folders 1-29, Box 5, Folders 1-25; contains scores and parts for jazz combos and jazz big bands of various sizes, and combinations of instruments (saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, guitar, bass, drums). Most are handwritten, but some are published copies and photocopies of published sheet music. Many of these arrangements were organized in a numbered catalogue (see SERIES III), but are here in this collection alphabetically. SERIES II: MISCELLANEOUS (MANUSCRIPTS) Located in Box 5, Folder 26; contains sketches and other unidentified pages of scores and parts, handwritten, along with a couple theory exercises. SERIES III: MISCELLANEOUS (OTHER) Located in Box 5, Folders 27-28, and Box 6; contains stationery and business cards for the Harry Trotman Orchestra, printed catalogues of Trotman’s arrangements, souvenir programs from Kansas City’s Electric Park, a copy of the Libretto to Bizet’s Carmen, memorabilia (including a coffee mug, ashtray, and matchbox), and other various items. SERIES IV: PHOTOGRAPHS Located in Box 5, Folder 29; contains 25 photographs, mostly of Trotman and friends in performance settings, along with an 8x10 glossy photograph of jazz banjo player Buddy Lee. • “The Stories Behind the Songs”
“The Stories Behind The Songs” John Henderson The Stories Behind The Songs A compilation of “inside stories” behind classic country hits and the artists associated with them John Debbie & John By John Henderson (Arrangement by Debbie Henderson) A fascinating and entertaining look at the life and recording efforts of some of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters 1 Author’s Note My background in country music started before I even reached grade school. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.
