A Study of Two Biblical Choral Symphonies With an Original Composition. Published Doctor of Arts dissertation, University of Northern Colorado, 2012. The choral symphony is a hybrid genre. A symphony may be defined as an orchestral work that balances musical variety with an overarching unity, and creates the sense of a journey. Formal cohesion and a sense of inevitability are integral. These ends may be achieved without adherence to Classical symphonic structure. Franz Liszt’s Dante Symphony and Hilding Rosenberg’s Revelation of St. John are choral symphonies that use text from the Bible, and merit close analysis. They both serve as models in various ways to an original composition, the Symphony of Creation. Analysis of all three of these works shows the use of rhetorical formal structures, and demonstrates the explanatory power of a theory about the meaning of music: it is a language in which musical phenomena are recognized as metaphors for extra-musical phenomena. All the parameters of music—pitch, rhythm, timbre, harmony, dynamics, and range—collaborate to generate metaphors for such ideas as height and depth, light and dark, malevolence and benevolence, pain and pleasure, violence and gentleness. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to acknowledge my committee members, Dr. Robert Ehle, Dr. Jonathan Bellman, Dr. Russell Guyver, Dr. Aaron Liu-Rosenbaum, and Pr. LORI RHODEN - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA MAY 2013 Liszt was born in the part of western Hungary that became known today as the Burgenland. As one of the leaders of the Romantic movement in music, Liszt developed new methods of piano performance and composition; he anticipated the ideas/procedures of music in the 20th century. He also promoted the method of thematic transformation as part of his revolution in form, made radical experiments in harmony, and invented the symphonic poem for orchestra. He was a composer, teacher and most importantly, a highly accomplished pianist. As one of the greatest piano virtuosos of his time, he had excellent technique and a dazzling performance ability that gained him fame and enabled the spreading of the knowledge of other composers’ music. He was also committed to preserving and promoting the best music from the past, including Bach, Handel, Schubert, Weber and Beethoven. Liszt had a strong religious background, which was contradictory to his love for worldly sensationalism. It is fair, however, to say that he was a great man who had a positive influence on people around him. From the 1830-1840’s, Liszt developed a new vocabulary for technique and musical expression in the piano world. He was able to do so partly because of the advances in the mechanical construction of the instrument.

In order to make a thorough and clear analysis of this relationship a structural/semiotic analysis has been developed as the analysis of best fit. Historically it has been fashionable to see Liszt's symphonic poems in terms of sonata form or a form only making sense in terms of the attached programme.
