The Journey Begins Area teams start preparations for 2021 with spring practices

LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR Oklahoma high school football teams are just three months away from beginning their journey towards a possible state championship. The 2021 varsity football season is scheduled to kick off August 26-28 with some teams opening their sea- sons during Zero Week. Teams that compete during Zero Week will have a Bye Week during the regular season, while teams that do not compete during Zero Week will find themselves opening 2021 one week later, September 2-4 and will compete for 10 straight weeks. Based on last year’s regular-season schedules, five of the six Okmulgee County football teams will start their 2021 campaign during Zero Week on August 27, while the other will kick off 2021 one week later on September 3. (Editor’s Note: The 2021 regular-season schedules for the six varsity football teams had not been released at presstime.) Varsity football teams in Classes 6A-I through Class C are allowed to hold spring practices and strength and conditioning workouts from the second week of May until June 24.
