International Journal of Pharmaceutical Science and Research International Journal of Pharmaceutical Science and Research ISSN: 2455-4685, Impact Factor: RJIF 5.28 www.pharmacyjournal.net Volume 1; Issue 6; September 2016; Page No. 37-43 Abrus precatorius Linn (Fabaceae): phytochemistry, ethnomedicinal uses, ethnopharmacology and pharmacological activities Samuel Ehiabhi Okhale, Ezekwesiri Michael Nwanosike Department of Medicinal Plant Research and Tradidtional Medicine, National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, IDU Industrial Area, Garki, Abuja, Nigeria Abstract The ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, ethnopharmacology and pharmacological applications of Abrus precatorius L (Fabaceae), an endemic medicinal plant in Nigeria is herein highlighted. In traditional medicine, this plant is useful for treating cough, sores, wounds caused by dogs, cats and mice, mouth ulcer, gonorrhea, jaundice and haemoglobinuric bile, tuberculous painful swellings, skin diseases, bronchitis, hepatitis, schistosomiasis, stomatitis, conjunctivitis, migraine and eye pain. Phytochemical studies of bioactive constituents of Abrus precatorius have been reported. Several types of alkaloids, terpenoids and flavonoids including luteolin, abrectorin, orientin, isoorientin, and desmethoxycentaviridin-7-O-rutinoside, glycyrrhizin, abrusoside A to D, abrusogenin and abruquinones D, E and F were identified from the plant. Various pharmacological studies on A. precatorius showed it possessed antimicrobial, antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities. Abrus precatorius seeds contain abrin, one of the most potent toxins known to man. However, because of the seed’s outer hard coat, ingestion of uncrushed seeds caused only mild symptoms and typically results in complete recovery. In ethnomedicinal practice, seven whole seeds of A. precatorius are ingested in a single dose to aid vision. Ingestion of the crushed seeds causes more serious toxicity, including death. -

Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 43: 116, 164 (109-369). Type-species: Neptis exaleuca Karsch, by original designation. Synonyms based on extralimital type-species: Philonoma Billberg; Paraneptis Moore; Kalkasia Moore; Hamadryodes Moore; Bimbisara Moore; Strabrobates Moore; Rasalia Moore; Seokia Sibatani. The genus Neptis belongs to the Family Nymphalidae Rafinesque, 1815; Subfamily Limenitidinae Behr, 1864; Tribe Neptini Newman, 1870. The other genera in the Tribe Neptini in the Afrotropical Region are Cymothoe and Harma. Neptis (Sailers) is an Old World genus of more than 160 species, 82 of which are Afrotropical. One Afrotropical species extends extralimitally. Neptis livingstonei Suffert, 1904 is declared to be a nomen nudum by Richardson (2019: 103). [Neptis livingstonei Suffert, 1904. Known only from the type specimen from the type locality.] Neptis sextilla Mabille, 1882 is declared to be a nomen nudum by Richardson (2019). [Neptis sextilla Mabille, 1882. Naturaliste 4: 99 (99-100). Type locality: [West Africa?]: “Madagascar”. [False locality?]. Type possibly lost (not found in the NHM, London or MNHN) (Lees et al., 2003). The description suggests that although it may well have been recorded from Madagascar, it is either an aberration or a hybrid between Neptis kikideli and Neptis saclava (Lees et al., 2003). -
American Soybean Rust -Phakopsora Meibomiae
U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service Systematic Mycology and Microbiology Laboratory - Invasive Fungi Fact Sheets American soybean rust -Phakopsora meibomiae Phakopsora meibomiae is a rust native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas that has a broad host range among legume species. It infects soybean (Glycine max) but is less aggressive on that host than the Asian soybean rust species, P. pachyrhizi, which has invaded and spread widely throughout the Americas. Because the American species has not caused epidemics on soybean in South America or invaded North America, it can be considered to be much less invasive than the Asian species. Given its broad host range, the possibility exists that strains of P. meibomiae could be a threat to other legumes cultivated in warm parts of the world. Phakopsora meibomiae (Arthur) Arthur 1917 Spermogonia and aecia are unknown. Uredinia on adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces, mostly on the abaxial surface (hypophyllous), minute, scattered or in groups on discoloured lesions, subepidermal in origin, paraphyses arising from peridioid pseudoparenchyma and hymenium, opening through a central aperture, pulverulent, pale cinnamon-brown. Paraphyses cylindric to clavate, (10-)15-55(-64) µm x 6-12 µm, thin-walled laterally, thickened apically (up to 12 µm). Urediniospores sessile, obovoid to broadly ellipsoid, 16-31 x 12-24 µm. Spore wall ca 1µm thick, minutely and densely echinulate, colourless to pale yellowish-brown. Germ pores four to eight (rarely 10), mostly scattered on, but sometimes on and above, the equatorial zone. Telia hypophyllous, often intermixed with uredinia, pulvinate, crustose, chestnut-brown to chocolate-brown, subepidermal in origin, 1 to 4(-5) spore-layered, chestnut-brown above, paler below. -

Habitat: Forest, including severely degraded habitat (Larsen, 2005a). In Tanzania it occurs at altitudes from 800 to 1 400 m (Kielland, 1990d). Habits: This is the commonest species of Neptis in the West African forest zone (Larsen, 2005a). Specimens fly around slowly, about 1.5 m above the ground, in clearings and along paths in the forest (Larsen, 2005a).
