    News for Immediate Release Contact: Sonja Burris 803-329-5200 [email protected] York County, South Carolina Facts Settled: The earliest known inhabitants of York County, SC were the Catawba Indians. The first European settlers were the Scots-Irish from Pennsylvania and Virginia. The county was officially established in 1785. County History: From 1772 until the end of the Revolutionary War the area was known as the New Acquisition and ran approximately eleven miles north-to-south and sixty- five miles from east-to-west. In 1785, York County became one of the original counties in the newly-created state. The section of South Carolina known as the “New Acquisition” was the scene of significant activity during the American Revolution. The Battles of Williamson’s Plantation (Huck’s Defeat) and Kings Mountain were both fought on York County soil. York County as a whole experienced significant growth during the antebellum years, and the increase occurred primarily among the black population. As the importance of cotton grew, so did slavery become an integral part of the economic life of the county. The antebellum period saw the establishment and growth of several rural settlement areas and communities in York County. Key to York County’s mid- nineteenth-century growth was the arrival in the eastern part of the county of the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad, opened in 1852. Beginning in the 1880s, the textile industry became increasingly important, and by the 1950s it was the largest employer in the county. Railroads and textiles also spurred the development of Rock Hill and Fort Mill, which are now the largest cities in the county.

    The Chemistry of Rocks in the Wissahickon Valley Cristobal Carambo Philadelphia High School for Girls Problem Statement Rationale Proposed Unit of Study Objectives Background Standards Used in the Unit Lesson Plans Appendix Bibliography Problem Statement The majority of my students are sophomores who have had little to no science during their middle school years. This lack of a comprehensive science program in their formative years explains much of their difficulty connecting science to their daily life. This is most evident when I introduce the periodic table of elements and attempt to explain how elements combine to form the many compounds that are necessary in our lives. Although I use many common household chemicals to illustrate the importance of elements and compounds, students still fail to fully appreciate the role that chemistry plays in our understanding of the physical world. I have often attempted to use the chemistry of the rock cycle to connect our class to the real world but many students are unaware of the rock cycle, or have had a cursory general survey of rocks. Understanding the role that elements play in the formation of minerals and how those minerals combine to form the many rock types and materials in our world would create a vibrant connection between the static elements on the periodic table and the world in which we live. In our conversations of the world around us, I have noticed that many of my students have had little or no experiences in natural settings where they could explore and make connections between the concepts learned in the classroom and their environment.

    Regional and County Population Change in North Carolina A Summary of Trends from April 1, 2010 through July 1, 2016 North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management December 2017 Introduction The following document summarizes population trends for North Carolina using the certified county population estimates produced by the North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management (OSBM) released in September of 2017. These certified population estimates are as of July 1, 2016.1 Additional population tables that include statistics for all 100 counties can be obtained from https://www.osbm.nc.gov/demog/county‐estimates.2 Highlights: North Carolina grew by 620,254 people between April 1, 2010 and July 1, 2016, a 6.5% increase; Three of every four people added in this period were living in central North Carolina3; 95% of all growth occurred within metropolitan counties4; Among regional planning areas, only the Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments experienced population decline; The fastest growing metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) since April 1, 2010 were the North Carolina portion of the Myrtle Beach‐Conway‐North Myrtle Beach MSA, the Raleigh MSA, the North Carolina portion of the Charlotte‐Concord‐Gastonia MSA, and the Wilmington MSA. Argued January 19, 2021—Decided May 17, 2021 Baltimore’s Mayor and City Council (collectively City) sued various en- ergy companies in Maryland state court alleging that the companies concealed the environmental impacts of the fossil fuels they promoted. The defendant companies removed the case to federal court invoking a number of grounds for federal jurisdiction, including the federal officer removal statute, 28 U. S. C. §1442. The City argued that none of the defendants’ various grounds for removal justified retaining federal ju- risdiction, and the district court agreed, issuing an order remanding the case back to state court. Although an order remanding a case to state court is ordinarily unreviewable on appeal, Congress has deter- mined that appellate review is available for those orders “remanding a case to the State court from which it was removed pursuant to section 1442 or 1443 of [Title 28].” §1447(d). USA Abstract The dynamic nature of Delaware's Atlantic coastline coupled with high shoreline property values and a growing coastal tourism industry combine to create a natural resources management problem that is particularly difllcult to address. The problem of communities threatened with storm damage and loss of recreational beaches is seriolls. Local and slate oflkials are dealing with the connicts that arise from development occurring on coastal barriers. Delaware must decide which erosion control option is the most beneficial and economically sound choice. Dehates over beach management options began with the discussion of a long~term management strategy. Beach nourishment and retreat were the primary approaches discussed during the development of H comprehensive managcment plan, entitled Beaches 2000. This plan was developed to deal with beach erosion through the year 2000. Beaches 2000 recommends a series ofactions that incorporate a variety of issues related to the management and protection of Delaware's Atlantic coastline. The recommendations arc intended to guide state and local policy regarding the statc's benches. The goal of Beaches 2000 is to cnsure that this important natural resource and tourist attraction continues to he available to the citizens of Delaware and out-or-state beach visitors. Since the publication of this document, the state has managed Delaware's shorelines through nourishment activities. Nourishment projccts have successfully maintained beach widths·.

    U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service – Coastal Program Delaware Bay Estuary Project Supporting the conservation and restoration of the salt marshes of Delaware Bay People have altered the expansive salt marshes of Delaware Bay for centuries to farm salt hay, try to control mosquitoes, create channels for boats, to increase developable land, and other reasons all resulting in restricted tidal flow, disrupted sediment balances, or increasing erosion. Sea level rise and coastal storms threaten to further negatively impact the integrity of these salt marshes. 'Reston, VA 1998 GEOLOGIC MAP OF THE PIEDMONT IN THE SAVAGE AND RELAY QUADRANGLES, HOWARD, BALTIMORE, AND ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTIES, MARYLAND by Avery Ala Drake, Jr. INTRODUCTION The Piedmont in the Savage and Relay quadrangles (fig. 1) is largely in Howard County, Maryland. The northeasternmost part is in Baltimore County, Maryland and about 0.03 square miles is in Anne Arundel County. Most of the area is suburban and almost all outcrops are restricted to the Patapsco, Middle Patuxent, Little Patuxent, and other stream valleys. Crystalline rocks of the central Appalachian Piedmont within these quadrangles are overlain in many places by Coastal Plain deposits of Cretaceous age. Alluvium occurs along most streams. The geology of adjacent quadrangles on the west and south has been mapped by Drake (in press, unpublished data, 1991-1997) and J.N. Roen and A.A. Drake, Jr. (in press), and that to the north and east by Crowley (1976). The tectonics of the area were interpreted by Crowley (1976) and Drake (1995). Aeromagnetic and gravity surveys of the area were interpreted by Bromery (1968).
