The Technology: Before the advent of high-speed digital electronics, standard audio and video signals were transmitted and processed using analog voltage signals. Like most analog systems, these signals were prone to interference and other factors that degrade the signals between the transmitting device and the receiving device, resulting in unsatisfactory performance. As technologies and techniques evolved to solve these issues, a number of digital systems were developed. Various companies and engineering standards committees defined some of these digital systems and established industry-wide specifications for their design and implementation.

Standard , which is a mixture of luminance (brightness), (color), and timing signals, can be digitized and transmitted over wires in real time. can also be digitized in a similar fashion. This signal was defined by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers under their specification 259M (SMPTE 259M).

Standard audio signals, either stereo (two signals) or mono, can be digitized and transmitted over wires in real time as well. Two of the most popular methods that have evolved are SPDIF (Sony-Philips Digital Interface Format) and AES3 (Audio Engineering Society). These two methods are very similar, with the SPDIF format popular in commercial audio equipment and the AES3 format more common in industrial applications.

In the broadcast industry, SMPTE 259M and AES3 have become the most popular technologies. They are mature and well established, widely used for over a decade now in broadcast studios and elsewhere. Many companies produce products that cater to this market that continue to use these technologies.

Video and audio analog signals are simply electrical voltage signals that vary in level over time, analogous to the physical parameter they represent. For video, the analog voltage level represents brightness or color. For audio, the voltage levels are an electrical representation of the sound waves that produced them. A digital system uses an analog to digital (A/D) converter to create a number that represents the analog voltage level at a particular instant of time. By rapidly sampling and converting the analog signal, the A/D converter produces a stream of numbers that is a good representation of the varying analog signal. In turn, this stream of numbers can be transmitted to another location, where the reverse process converts them back to analog signals for amplification, display, etc. Since the stream of digital numbers is not sensitive to the type of interference that affects their voltage levels, the original analog signal can be recreated at the receiver with no loss of quality, even in electrically noisy environments. Analog Audio - electrical signals whose voltage varies with time that represents a sound wave. Sound waves are converted to analog audio signals using a microphone. For line- level analog audio, these electrical signals are AC, around the level of 1V peak-to-peak. Microphones create low-level audio signals, around 10 mV peak-to-peak and are usually amplified up to line-level before further processing or transmitting.

Analog Video - electrical signals whose voltage (or AC frequency) is a representation of an image parameter such as brightness or color. In the NTSC system, this analog video signal is used to "paint" an entire image onto a display screen in 1/30th of a second. Analog Video signals can be separated into two or more signals that represent a portion of an image. For example, S-Video separates the brightness (called Y) signal from the color (called C) signal and transmits them on separate wires. For a variety of reasons, this scheme results in a sharper image. The color signal can be further separated into red (Cr) and blue (Cb) components and transmitted in separate wires along with the brightness (Y) signal. This is the component video scheme.

AES3 - a definition of a high-speed stream of digital data that is a conversion of an analog audio signal. This analog audio signal is usually stereo (two independent signals) or mono (one signal). This same standard defines larger multi-channel systems, such as surround sound.

SMPTE 259M - a definition of a very high-speed stream of digital data that is a conversion of an analog video signal.

SDI - Generic term for serial digital interface. Could refer to video or audio in various standards, including SMPTE 259M and AES3. May have prefix - SD-SDI - for Standard Definition Serial Digital Interface (SMPTE 259M) or HD-SDI (High Definition Serial Digital Interface)

SDV - Generic acronym for Serial Digital Video. Typical Fully DigitalSystem Layout:
