TE AWAMUTU COURIER, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2011 13 Pair’s fourth collaboration again helping children

BY DEAN TAYLOR

The long term working relationship between Rotorua children’s author, storyteller and singer Bea Yates (Aunty Bea) and Te Awamutu artist/ designer Kat Q Merewether has culminated in the release of a fourth collaboration featuring songs. Waiata Mai is an illustrated collection of well known Maori songs, complete with sing-a-long CD. What many people will not realise is all the songs, which are popular in pre-schools and schools, were written by Aunty Bea. A friend suggested they be put into one book because children and parents would enjoy the songs, but also to acknowledge the creator. The songs are illustrated by Mrs Merewether. Other collaborations are One Day A Taniwha, Hoha Te Taniwha and Ihenga. One Day A Taniwha was written in 1974 but not published until 2009. Mrs Merewether was working for Te Wananga O Aotearoa at the time, and had done a number of illustrations for the Te Reo Maori Programme material, when she met Aunty Bea who was searching for the right illustrator. She says it has been a wonderful experience working with Aunty Bea, who is lovely and loves helping children. It was through her relationship with the author, TC151211DT04 and support of Te Awamutu Paper Plus which sells (ABOVE) ILLUSTRATOR Kat Q the books, that Mrs Merewether was able to bring Merewether with the new song book Aunty Bea to Te Awamutu as part of the launch of at Paper Plus Te Awamutu’s launch. Site applications for 2012 New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays have surpassed organiser’s expectations once again with a 13% increase on 2011 applications. To date, 88% of all agricultural sites have been sold, well ahead of previous years. RURAL LIVING AREA The Rural Living area, which comprises eight percent of the agribusiness event, has also seen higher demand, putting organisers in good stead to once again sell out well in advance of the June exhibition. Businesses are securing more space at Fieldays to fully showcase their products and services, demonstrating the value and significance of Fieldays in the agriculture sector. Events Manager Vanessa Richmond says that with exhibitors requiring more space, it’s clear businesses involved in agriculture realise the immense benefits of a presence at Fieldays. ‘‘After 43 Fieldays it’s also critical to remain relevant to visitors; we can only achieve this by continually driving the rural sector’s latest techno- logy and topics.” PREMIER FEATURE ‘The Changing Face of Farming’ is the 2012 Premier Feature, focusing on the various land ownership models and the change in farming approaches of New Zealanders. The theme incorporates the trending shift from traditional family owned farms and in turn the effects on the rural landscape. Situated in the heart of Fieldays, the Premier Feature exhibition area will take on a new look with a dedicated seminar area. Other changes at New Zealand National Agri- cultural Fieldays include a larger International Exhibition area within the Mystery Creek Pavilion to provide space for more exhibiting international businesses. KIWI’S BEST The popular Kiwi’s Best marquee will also increase in size, with primary production cele- brated as an important part of agriculture. Companies are still able to apply for the remaining Fieldays sites and are now assigned in order of submission. Bookings for next year’s event can be made by visiting www.fieldays.co.nz/applicationform, by phoning (07) 843 4499 or emailing [email protected]. New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays will be held on June 13-16, 2012 at Mystery Creek Events Centre. Reunion reminder for training college

A re-union of students who attended Ardmore Teachers College in 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1957 will be held at the Kingsgate Hotel, Hamilton on March 23-25 next year. The programme will include a get together on the evening of Friday March 23, a day of activities on Saturday March 24 (including a dinner in the evening) and a farewell gathering on Sunday March 25. Inquiries about registration and accommo- dation should be directed to reunion Secretary Dawn Smith (via email [email protected]) or to Alan Hall (phone 07 872 8088 or email
