ARTICLE .1 Macro-Perspectives beyond the World System Joseph Voros Swinburne University of Technology Australia Abstract This paper continues a discussion begun in an earlier article on nesting macro-social perspectives to also consider and explore macro-perspectives beyond the level of the current world system and what insights they might reveal for the future of humankind. Key words: Macrohistory, Human expansion into space, Extra-terrestrial civilisations Introduction This paper continues a train of thought begun in an earlier paper (Voros 2006) where an approach to macro-social analysis based on the idea of "nesting" social-analytical perspectives was described and demonstrated (the essence of which, for convenience, is briefly summarised here). In that paper, essential use was made of a typology of social-analytical perspectives proposed by Johan Galtung (1997b), who suggested that human systems could be viewed or studied at three main levels of analysis: the level of the individual person; the level of social systems; and the level of world systems. Distinctions can be made between different foci of study. The focus may be on the stages and causes of change through time (termed diachronic), or it could be at some specific point in time (termed synchronic). As well, the focus may be on a specific single case (termed idiographic), in contrast to seeking regularities, patterns, or generalised "laws" (termed nomo- thetic). In this way, there are four main types of perspectives found at any particular level of analy- sis. Visualizing Science: An artist's collaboration with astronomer Carl Sagan at UCSD, Jan. 22 January 15, 1997 MEDIA ADVISORY EVENT: Visualizing Science: An Artist's Collaboration with Astronomer Carl Sagan DATE/TIME: 4:15 p.m.--5:30 p.m., Jan. 22, 1997 LOCATION: Peterson Hall, Rm. 108 University of California, San Diego BACKGROUND: Jon Lomberg, principal artistic collaborator to the late Carl Sagan for about a quarter century, will present some of his illustrations and artwork during a public lecture at UCSD honoring Sagan, who died last month. Lomberg will deliver the talk as a UC Regents' Lecturer sponsored by UCSD's Department of Psychology and The Laboratory for Applied Cognitive Research. Since the publication of "The Cosmic Connection" in 1972, Lomberg worked on virtually all of Sagan's projects to popularize science including most of his books, many of his magazine articles, the "nuclear winter" work, and the TV series "Cosmos," for which Lomberg won an Emmy Award for his work as chief artist. At the time of Sagan's death in December, Lomberg and Sagan were collaborating on the film version of Sagan's novel "Contact." In his talk, the artist will describe his work with Sagan, showing many examples of their work together and sharing personal recollections of the world-famous astronomer. Lomberg will deliver a second Regents lecture, "Messages Across Space and Time," from 4:15 p.m.--5:30 p.m., Jan. 29, Peterson Hall, Rm. 108. At this time, Lomberg will describe his role in the creation of four of the most unusual and long-lasting artifacts ever created by human beings, including NASA's Voyager Interstellar Record (for extraterrestrial beings far off the Milky Way). -

It would be the height of presumption to think that we are the only living things in that enormous immensity.” ∼ Wernher von Braun Introduction The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) has long been of interest to humankind. The problem is how would we communicate with extraterrestrial biological entities (EBEs) if we met them? It is said that in 1820, the famous German mathematician Karl Friedrich Gauss recommended that a giant right triangle of trees be planted in the Russian wilderness, an exercise that would demonstrate to EBEs that the inhabitants of Earth were civilized enough to understand geometry. It is also said that 20 years later, the Viennese astronomer Joseph von Littrow proposed digging a twenty-mile-long ditch in the Sahara, filling it with kerosene, and lighting it at night, again to communicate that there was intelligent life down here. In the modern era, the American radio astronomer Frank Drake is generally credited with beginning the first serious efforts geared toward communication with possible extraterrestrial intelligences. In 1960, at the Green Bank radio astronomy facility in West Virginia, he began the first modern search for radio signals of extraterrestrial origin, called Project Ozma. Communication without preamble In the years that followed Project Ozma, there was a great deal of debate as to whether or not we could actually decode a message if we received it, and even more to the point, whether or not an EBE could decode a message from us if it received one. -

Calling themselves the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence in Exile, or SETI-X, the group claimed to have received an alien transmission of rearranged sound from the Voyager Golden Record, a phonograph album famously sent into outer space in 1977 on each of NASA’s two Voyager spacecraft (Figure 1). The Golden Record had been put together in the mid-1970s by a panel convened by astronomer Carl Sagan, and it held a program of sounds and music of Earth, representing to imagined aliens our planet’s soundscapes, voices, and musical traditions. [2] 1 Because the scientists of SETI-X wished to remain anonymous, Seeland sought a public voice or commentator from other quarters. Because the label had in 2003 released a CD I had created, Xerophonics: Copying Machine Music, a science- and-technology themed mix of sounds of indefinite ownership (Helmreich 2003), and because I had also written about scientific notions of extraterrestrial life (Helmreich 2006), Seeland reasoned that I might be appropriately positioned to offer thoughts on the SETI-X document. They asked me to comment, which I did in a few venues (including, among other sites, the Los Angeles Daily News [Mills 2010]. -

SHCHERBAK2 ABSTRACT After it was proposed that life on Earth might descend from seeding by an earlier extraterrestrial civilization motivated to secure and spread life, some authors noted that this alternative offers a testable implication: microbial seeds could be intentionally supplied with a durable signature that might be found in extant organisms. In particular, it was suggested that the optimal location for such an artifact is the genetic code, as the least evolving part of cells. However, as the mainstream view goes, this scenario is too speculative and cannot be meaningfully tested because encoding/decoding a signature within the genetic code is something ill-defined, so any retrieval attempt is doomed to guesswork. Here we refresh the seeded-Earth hypothesis in light of recent observations, and discuss the motivation for inserting a signature. We then show that “biological SETI” involves even weaker assumptions than traditional SETI and admits a well-defined methodological framework. After assessing the possibility in terms of molecular and evolutionary biology, we formalize the approach and, adopting the standard guideline of SETI that encoding/decoding should follow from first principles and be convention-free, develop a universal retrieval strategy. Applied to the canonical genetic code, it reveals a nontrivial precision structure of interlocked logical and numerical attributes of systematic character (previously we found these heuristically). To assess this result in view of the initial assumption, we perform statistical, comparison, interdependence, and semiotic analyses. -

Bozeman ABSTRACT This dissertation uses Actor Network Theory (ANT) and Stark and Bainbridge’s rational choice theory of religion to analyze an established but controversial branch of science and technology, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Of particular interest are the cultural, and sometimes religious, assumptions that its creators have built into it. The purpose of this analysis is not to discredit SETI, but instead to show how SETI, along with other avant-garde scientific projects, is founded, motivated, and propelled by many of the same types of values and visions for the future that motivate the founders of religious groups. I further argue that the utopian zeal found in SETI and similar movements is not aberrant, but instead common, and perhaps necessary, in many early- stage projects, whether technical or spiritual, which lack a clear near-term commercial or social benefit.
