Det är vår förhoppning att numret speglar den bredd av sjöhistorisk kun- skapsproduktion, särskilt med avseende på svensk sjöhistoria, som för när- varande pågår. Detta nummer av Forum navale består av tre vetenskapliga artiklar som har genomgått oberoende sakkunniggranskning av åtminstone två anony- ma granskare. I den första artikeln identifierar Niklas Eriksson det så kall- lade Dalarövraket som återfanns 2003 norr om Dalarö i Stockholms skär- gård som 1600-talsstrussen Bodekull. Den andra artikeln, som är författad av Frans Gooskens, behandlar tre svenska diplomaters roll i fredsfördraget i Breda 1667, det fördrag som kännetecknade slutet på det Andra engelsk- nederländska kriget. Den tredje artikeln har samma tema som de två ar- tiklar av Brad Beaven och Isaac Land som publicerades i Forum navale 72 – nämligen hamnstäder. Tomas Nilson analyserar i artikeln Gunnar Dahlins bok Sjömän och Shanghajare som handlar om svenska sjömäns liv och le- verne i Antwerpen under första halvan av 1900-talet. 9 Artiklarna följs av två populärvetenskapliga essäer som har genomgått redaktionell granskning. I den första essän skriver Martin Eriksson om is- brytarpolitik på 1950- och 1960-talen och visar på den viktiga roll som den svenska skogsindustrin hade för att åstadkomma året-runt-sjöfart i Bottenviken. Den andra essän, skriven av Ingvar Svanberg, handlar om svenskars möten med och erfarenhet av strandade valar från sent 1400-tal till idag. Därefter följer en debatt kring den artikel av Mirja Arnshav om kvinnor i 1600-talets svenska flotta som publicerades i Forum navale 73. Nils Modig har författat ett debattinlägg som problematiserar Arnshavs ar- tikel. Detta följs av ett genmäle av Arnshav och en avslutande reflektion av biträdande redaktör AnnaSara Hammar. I detta nummer av Forum navale finns också ett kommenterat dokument. Lars Grundberg beskriver hur ett av Sveabolagets fartyg – Rönnskär – gjorde nio resor från Tyskland till Sve- rige under andra världskriget för att transportera frigivna fångar ur nazis- ternas koncentrationsläger. En av dessa var Hédi Fried. Numret avrundas med ett tiotal recensioner. Sjöhistoriska Samfundet delar årligen ut ett forskarpris till ”forskare, svensk eller utländsk, som med sitt vetenskapliga arbete utvecklar kun- skapen om svensk maritim historia eller angränsande ämnen.” Priset är in- stiftat till minne av den svenske historikern Jan Glete (1947-2009), sty- relseledamot i Samfundet och en av världens främsta specialister på de europeiska örlogsflottorna under tidigmodern tid. Vid Samfundets höstmöte delades priset för år 2017 ut till den danske historikern och museimannen Jakob Seerup. Han belönades för sin omfat- tande vetenskapliga produktion om den danska örlogsflottans verksamhet i Östersjön under det långa 1700-talet. I Jakob Seerups forskning ryms både internationella utblickar och jämförelser med den svenska flottan. Genom att belysa mindre uppmärksammade aspekter av flottans verksamhet och sociala organisation har han även bidragit till att utveckla örlogsforskning- en i nya riktningar. Ganska osökt och av ren nyfiken- het kommer man ju att undra vilket fartyg det är, vad skepparen hette, varifrån det seglade, vart det var på väg och vad som egentligen hände när det sjönk. Även om det finns en rad arkeologiska frågeställningar att belysa från själva vraken så framstår det ändå både angeläget och prioriterat att återfinna deras ursprungliga namn.1 Men att fastställa namn på flera hundra år gamla vrak är ofta en gan- ska invecklad process

    FANNING ISLAND The atoll was first discovered on 11 June 1798 by Captain Edmund Fanning, who commanded the American whaler Betsey. Fanning Island was formally annexed to Great Britain by Captain William Wiseman of HMS Caroline on 15 March 1888. The Gilbert and Ellice group of islands are in the Pacific Ocean, between 170 & 180 degrees longitude and the Gilbert Islands on the equator. When the two groups separated on 1 January 1976, the name of the Gilbert Islands, became Kiribati, and Fanning Island, reverted to its native name of Tabuaeran. Fanning Island (mid Pacific), North latitude 3.54° and 157.30° West longitude The atoll surrounds a 42.6 sq.mile lagoon with a deepest part of 50 feet and three narrow breaks inland, two for canoes, and the main entrance to English Harbour on the Western side which is 25-30 feet deep and 300 yards wide. In the 19th century, Fanning Island was exploited for guano, which was shipped to Honolulu. In 1855, Captain Henry English came with 150 natives of Manahiki Island in the Cook Islands settled and planted coconuts and exported at first coconut oil and later copra. In 1859 two vessels carried 15,000 gallons of oil to Honolulu, and in 1862 four vessels transported 44,000 gallons. By 1885 some guano was still being shipped out from Fanning and Washington, but by 1887 only copra. When the Pacific Cable Board’s station was opened at the island in 1902, the trans-Pacific mail steamers called there on the voyage from Auckland to San Francisco.

By coincidence, the date of this month’s Branch Meeting falls on 31st July, the centenary of the beginning of the Third Battle of Ypres, or, as it is more popularly remembered, Passchendaele. Haunting images of men and horses toiling through a sea of mud have, rightly or wrongly, come to define the popular perception of a battle that raged from the end of July to mid- November in 1917. However, despite its ever growing casualty list, it was a battle that very much needed to be fought, as I have already alluded to in my column of the January issue of this Newsletter. With the anniversary now upon us, some further detail will hopefully elucidate further. As far as Great Britain was concerned, her principle war aim had always been to ensure the long-term security and survival of the Empire. To achieve this, it was not only necessary to be on the winning side, but also to be the dominant force in the victorious group of Allies. In 1917, both of these aims gave cause for concern. The political and military capabilities of Britain’s two main Allies, Russia and France were now in doubt, with Russia in the grip of revolution and the French Army now refusing to fight.

    THE SEA DEVIL ©2011 by Marcus J. Fisk This is an adventure story of a vibrant, Quixotic, and romantic character – Count Felix von Luckner. His life was chronicled by writers and journalists, and like a contemporary of his -- T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) -- both fought superbly in World War I and yet both were completely ignored by their native countries or are parenthetical references to that war. In Luckner’s time the world was emerging from the Victorian age, shedding its innocence, and receiving the cruel baptism of the 20th Century. He was a contrast – a bold and blustery sea-faring warrior who ran the British blockade in a converted, square-rigged sailing ship, raided commercial shipping and captured l4 ships and their crews. As a warrior he was highly decorated for valor in combat, he also received a humanitarian medal by the Pope. Luckner ran away from his aristocratic home at age thirteen, lived under an assumed name to hide his nobility and started a life-long love affair with ships and the sea. His adolescence was spent at sea aboard clippers and brigantines, and ashore as a wrestler, a prize fighter, a dishwasher, an assistant lighthouse keeper, and in the Salvation Army. After drifting for seven years he went home to Germany, finished school, and became a Lieutenant in the Imperial Naval Reserve. Only then, did he return home to his parents, who presumed him dead. In WWI he was granted command of a reconfigured clipper ship to run the British blockade and harass enemy commercial shipping. His brilliant deceptive tactics were so effective and his record so impressive, that the British nicknamed him “the Sea Devil.” During the eight months he ran the blockade Luckner and his crew sank 14 ships worth $25 Million in goods and kept countless other ships in port for fear of capture.

    0 MASTHEAD VOLUME 17, NO.1 SPRING 2006 Pamunkey River Project and MAHS Fall Field School 2005 By John Dowdle ver the Veteran’s Day weekend of 2005, MAHS move his forces up the Virginia peninsula from Fort O conducted an Underwater Archaeology Field Monroe, around the Norfolk area, to threaten the School in conjunction with its ongoing Pamunkey River Project. The field school was part of the initial exploration and survey of the White House Landing area along the river. Participants in the survey and field school included MAHS President Steve Anthony; MAHS Director of Education and Field School Supervisor Tom Berkey; and MAHS members John Dowdle and Dave Shaw. The MAHS Field School students were Jack Conroy and Chris Ginther. Bruce Terrell, Senior Underwater Archeologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is Project Archaeologist for the Pamunkey River Project, and he provided guidance and oversight for the event. The White House Landing area has seen over 300 years of American history. One of the most interesting periods was during spring and early summer of 1862, when Major General George B.
